In the novel Catch 22 by Joseph Heller entails a story influenced by his own experience during the war, about a man named Yossarian who is in war and wants to go home, but he cannot since the general raises the amount of missions when he gets close to the amount he needs to complete to go home. It shows the effect war has on people, the flaws in the military, and satire to complete the novel. Catch 22 has many characters that are important to the novel. Some of the significant characters in the novel are Yossarian, Doc Daneeka, Orr, , and Natley.
The first character introduced in the novel is Yossarian. His character is generally flat. If he were round than he would not be able to be in war due to his poor health conditions. His character is round since we learn so much about him, as he develops throughout the novel. He’s revealed through dialogue and back story, but his impact is minimal but does provide key information that’s necessary in the novel. Doc Daneeka is the doctor of the squadrons so he must be around his mid-thirties. His function in the novel is to describe what catch 22 is. He explains to Yossarian what Catch-22 is and has the ability to ground others if they are insane, but cannot at the same time due to catch 22. He changes towards the end when he “dies” when Mcwatt commits suicide and it is said that he was in the plane even though he was not in it, but he really thinks he’s dead since he cannot practice medicine anymore. “Doc Daneeka hated to fly. He felt imprisoned in an air plane” (Heller 33) this quote reveals the ironic nature of the novel and how it lead to him being left hopeless.
