Brandyn is a 9-year-old boy who is having issues with his behavior both at home and at school. He becomes angry when his teacher reprimands him for inappropriate behavior in class and towards his classmates. He bullies the other children and does not seem offended if he is placed on punishment for his inappropriate behavior. Brandyn lives in a single parent home; his mom works a lot of hours to provide for them and she also states her son is misbehaving at home. She is concerned he is following the path of his non-existent father.
I always find myself feeling heavy hearted when I hear of situations where children are clearly troubled. Brandyn displays a number of symptoms that meet the criteria to be diagnosed with conduct disorder. He bullies his classmates and has choked one of them; if he wants something another student has he torments them until they surrender it to him. Brandyn also steals from his peers and the staff at his school, all of this falls under the specifications of Conduct Disorder.
Brandyn’s teacher and mother expressed concern for him, they have both mentioned they would like to help him but they are not sure what to do. The school should provide proper training to the teacher for her to learn how to deal with troubled kids like Brandyn. Instead of having a dismissive towards him that he is just a mischievous child, maybe it will help her to be more patient and understanding. I would also assist his mother in finding a state funded therapy program for her that will not be costly.

I would recommend continuing these intervention programs and work towards implementing them in our school system. The more resources available, the more children can get the help they need. The earlier their conduct is noticed, the earlier it can be dealt with to get them the assistance they need. This can help them to have a clearer path to a brighter future.

He is described as a “good kid” by parents and teacher, however, he is constantly active, impulsive, and frequently becoming involved in conflicts with adults. Parents are continuously working, and as mentioned in this case, they have to spend most of the time at home yelling at Richard or putting him in time-out as part of his consequences for not listening or misbehaving.
Brandon’s mother reported that the majority of his inappropriate behaviors were commenced during dealings with her boyfriend. His teachers at his school also report that Brandon’s behaviors are parallel to his classmates who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but for unknown reasons, his mother has failed to allow psychological testing as she fears that he will be labeled as crazy or slow child, and she is unsure if she agrees with the use of anti-psychotic medication with children. Brandon’s mother reported that he has participated in counseling to address his challenging behaviors, which include physical aggression, difficulty following rules at home and school, and using inappropriate grammar with sexual insinuations toward females. Conduct Disorder has been a part of the American Psychological Association’s Diagnostic Statistical Manuel (DSM) since its original release date in 1994. Although, there is new information about the disorder that was previously unknown, Conduct Disorder is distinguished by a “repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age-appropriate norms or rules are violated” (American Psychiatric Association, 1994.) This mild, moderate, or severe antisocial behavior begins to appear either in childhood, categorized as early-onset conduct disorder , or in adolescence after ten years of age, classified as adolescent-onset conduct disorder (Passamonti et al., 2010.) The criteria to meet to be diagnosed with this disorder are separated into four subgroups: aggressive conduct, nonaggressive conduct, deceitfulness or theft, and serious violations of the rules. Three or more incidents must be present in the past twelve months with at least one of the characteristics being present in the past six months. This disorder causes severe impairment of functioning across a variety of situations so it is important to keep in mind society and individual situations because this diagnosis may be “misapplied to individuals in settings where patterns of undesirable behavior are sometimes viewed as protective” (American Psychiatric Association, 1994.) For example, a patient that has recently relocated from a war torn country would most likely not be a candidate for Conduct disorder even though he or she may exhibit some of the characteristics.
Student’s lack of success can occur for many reasons but some believe that that it stems from poverty. Many families are forced to work more than one job in order to maintain the household and the children end up staying at home without adult supervision. Adult supervision is needed in order to provide structure, rules, and teach children basic social skills. Social skills are essential in our daily life as it is what we use to communicate with people to get what we want or need. In my experience, I have also noticed that the majority of at risk youth come from single mom or grandparent homes. I have experienced talking to single moms or guardians who do not implement discipline at home because they do not know how to discipline. Other times, they feel bad that the child’s other parent or parents are not in the picture so they try to composite by not enforcing consequences. The mental health of a child is another important concept that schools should consider when they are dealing with troubled youth. Many students have experienced trauma in their lives that has never healed. Teaching children to properly express their emotions is something that sometimes parents do not know how to teach. Having mental health services such as counseling is a great way to help the student heal from the trauma that has been keeping them from being successful. Schools should require all student to receive a mental health screening along with their physical in order to know the student’s history and to understand and help

Emotional and behavioral disorders manifest from various sources.
