Introduction
Cultural diversity is a strong part of people 's lives. It influences our views, values, humor, hopes, loyalties worry and fears. Diversity is defined as the way in which people differ that may affect their organizational experiences in terms of performance, motivation, communication and inclusion (Harvey, 2014). The company that will be the focus of this project is Novartis Pharmaceuticals. They are recognized as the leader in being culturally diverse. Being a diverse cultural company had led them to be honored in two consecutive years as the leader in hiring individuals based on their credentials, their work ethics, their gender, race, religious belief, and their physical capabilities (Novartis, 2016).

To be a supplier with Novartis a supplier’s diversity status is required and validated to ensure that they share the same principles and philosophy that Novartis follows. The different agencies that Novartis does business with includes United States Small Business Administration, National Minority Supplier Development, Women’s Business Enterprise, and National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (http://www.pharma.us.novartis.com). Diversity is the most vital component to help a country grow from strength to strength and an inclusive economy that will last. Novartis Pharmaceuticals has the necessary criteria’s for being the best company and not only that, they highlight the importance of having all the necessary criteria’s that are used in their selection process.

Background: Merck & Co. is an American pharmaceutical company and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. In 1971 the United States approved the use of an MMR vaccine made by Merck, containing the Jeryl Lynn strain of mumps vaccine. In 1978 Merck introduced the MMR II, using a different strain of the rubella vaccine. In 1997 the FDA required Merck to conduct effectiveness testing of MMRII. Initially it was over 95%; to continue the license; Merck had to convince the FDA that the effectiveness stayed at a similar rate over the years.
Being presented with the problems in the implementation of the SAP ERP system, it is evident that Novartis Pharmaceuticals requires a comprehensive action plan that resolves key issues and the underlying problem. Refer to Exhibit A for a graphical representation of the action plan.

Threat of new entrants is relatively high. Companies forming alliances are potential rivals. Even if earlier such company was not considered to be a threat, after merging with some research and development company or forming alliance with another pharmaceutical company it would become a rival to Eli Lilly. The threat is however weakened by significant research and development costs necessary to successfully enter the business. Eli Lilly’s focus on a relatively narrow market of sedatives and antidepressants weakens the threat of new entrants, but other products that form lesser part of company’s sales such as insulin and others are exposed to high threat of new entrants. The need of obtaining certificates and licenses also weakens the threat of new entrants. Discussed above leads to the conclusion that threat of new entrants is medium.
For commodity generic drugs, Teva has an opportunity to expand its core business into emerging markets, but there it will have to face institutional voids because such markets are driven by physicians and both physician and other people are not aware about the effectiveness of generic drugs. To cope with the challenge of institutional voids Teva have to look for some competent small pharmaceutical firms for acquisition and some big firms for the joint venture. For changing the perceptions of people and physicians, Teva will require to run marketing campaigns and direct approaches to physicians to develop a market for their products.
Schein in his book “Organizational Culture and Leadership” explains how different believes and behaviors start to be logical when we understand their cultures by stating “When we learn to see the world through cultural lenses, all kinds of things begin to make sense that initially were mysterious, frustrating, or seemingly stupid” (2010, p. 13). This kind of foresight should be the starting point in order to manage the tremendously growing diversity in the workforce nowadays. Leaders and administrators of both public and private organizations through their influence are responsible to promote and manage diversity in an ethical manner.
The foundation for developing an effective diversity management program relies on leadership commitment and the CEO should communicate the organization’s position on diversity management and his or her sincere belief in the importance of diversity (Cañas & Sondak, 2010). Indra Nooyi, the current Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, is a leader who demonstrates a strong passion for managing diversity. In this paper I will be discussing Indra Nooyi’s personal and professional background, the status of diversity within PepsiCo before her role as CEO, the leadership philosophy on managing diversity Indra Nooyi has taken, the strategies she has used to implement diversity management, and her diversity related goals. I will conclude with a discussion on the current status of PepsiCo in terms of diversity, their future diversity goals and how Nooyi’s diversity management efforts have affected the overall success of the company as a whole.

The impact of diversity in the workplace is contingent upon several factors. Across companies diversified workforces are becoming increasingly common. To successfully manage a diverse workforce, organizations are ensuring that employees understand how their values and stereotypes influence their behavior toward others of different gender, ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds; are gaining an appreciation of cultural differences among themselves; and behaviors that isolate or intimidate minorities are being improved (Noe et al., 2010, pg. 302).
Over the years the company has survived by focusing on its internal development in addition to a series of mergers, acquisitions, and corporate restructurings. Being a pharmaceutical company, the entire population is impacted: patients, physicians, employees, hospitals, and investors are some of the most important stakeholders. We first began our analysis of Novartis by evaluating the company’s strategic direction. Novartis’ mission statement is to care and to cure. They are a company that wants to discover, develop, and successfully market innovative products to prevent and cure disease, to ease suffering, and to enhance the quality of life.
In a world that has grown increasingly smaller due to mass media, world travel, and readily available information, the workplace has grown increasingly diverse in both gender and cultural aspects. Individuals no longer live and work within the confines of their geographic locations. At almost any position with any company the individual employee is a part of a larger world economy that harvests assets from the ends of the earth. Because of this, companies seek to capitalize on diversity to become more creative and flexible in their business models.
According to Kinicki, diversity represents the multitude of individual’s differences and similarities that exist among people. When developing a cultural diversity training program, one has to manage diversity with a new approach of inclusion and recognition. Managing diversity enables people to perform up to their maximum potential (Kinicki p. 111). As we analyze diversity, we will evaluate some common barriers and challenges in managing diversity. In developing a diversity program, we will analyze methods and procedures that will be apart of the program. Kinicki (p.*) says an important first step in overcoming these obstacles is for leaders to convey to their employees why the organization values diversity.
