Thomas Jefferson was a man who believed that all American citizens need to be educated so that they may exercise their rights. He saw public education as essential to a democracy. One proposal he made for public education would guarantee that all children could attend public schools for three years. However, much like other early school reforms, this proposal received much rejection and was never brought into being. Despite this rejection, Jefferson still believed that America needed public education. Eventually, he opened the University of Virginia. Even though his bills and proposals to benefit public education never saw the light of day, he still made many contributions to public education by providing the foundation on how a democracy should handle educating its
Detroit, once known as a bustling city of fast cars and bling, is now known for its poor education system. Detroit, minus its Red Wings, has failed at every turn economically and educationally. With its population cut in half and poverty rates soaring, there is no telling what can stop this disaster of a city. The only hope, it seems, is to better educate the region that Detroit inhabits. Detroit Public Schools has been one of the worst performing school districts in recent years. In 2013, the city of Detroit filed chapter 9 bankruptcy, the largest account of bankruptcy to-date. Good teachers avoid Detroit Public Schools because of the poverty, job quality, and low pay, leaving children with the unqualified teachers they have today in this poverty-plagued city that they call home.

In the study of The Way Schools Work we learned to question the ideals of meritocracy and the American dream. However, Conflict Theories challenge the system of meritocracy, in which people are sorted and selected on the basis of talent and ability. On the contrary, “Conflict Theories, on the other hand, imply a system of inheritance in which people’s life chances are largely determined by their starting point within an existing structure of inequality” (McNamee and Miller Jr. 2014, 11). According to these theorists mentioned in The Way Schools Work (Boudin 1974; Bowles and Gintis 1976; Carnoy 1972; Carnoy and Levin 1985; Persell 1977), they speak about how schools reproduce status in several ways. First, they use formal language, and hold
When a student shows signs of suicidal ideation or thoughts of harming others, the ASCA Ethical Standard provides guidance for Professional School Counselors concerning the mitigation of this situation. The ASCA Ethical Standards state that when students express harm to self or others, parents or legal guardians, and/or authorities must be notified (ASCA, 2016). In addition, the ASCA states school counselor must cautiously use risk assessment so intervention can be created. School Counselors must ensure when they are speaking with parents that they do not negate the risk of harm (ASCA, 2016). Counselors are not permitted to release a student who is considered at risk until support personal is present (ASCA, 2016). All federal, state,
While taking data, I have worked with this child to increase behaviors with reinforcement, teach new skills, and to reduce interfering behaviors, which can include self-injury. During the past year, I completed an online suicide talk session, which explores suicide prevention as well as becoming a Certified Mental Health First Aider. I also became a suicide and crisis line volunteer, giving emotional support for individuals experiencing emotional or situational distress, various forms of mental illness and in need of general information or referrals. The callers varied from transgender individuals to youth to other ethnic minority groups. I learned to not minimize grief or experiences because everyone is entitled to their feelings and every individual grieves and experiences trauma in various

Although no one can be entirely sure what motivates teens to commit mass shootings, there are theories that must be examined to develop solutions. One theory states that there are ten factors that contribute to the likelihood of a teen committing murder. These factors include an unstable home life, being bullied at school, obsession with violent entertainment, being suicidal, involvement with drugs or alcohol, involvement with gangs or cults, and mental illness. Usually at least four of these qualities are present in homicidal teens (Khadaroo). While many of these causes stem from home lif...

The topic of self-harm has received little coverage in the past few years. However it has become an increasingly popular matter in today’s mental health publications. Most of this attention is diverted to youths who live with the need to self-inflict violence upon them. Self-harm is a pertinent issue in our teen society todays and it’s extremely difficult to stop. “Professor Keith Hawton (Hawton et al., 2006 P. 44) reports that the majority of self-harming behaviors do not reach professional attention. Most information about self-harm as a medical phenomenon and as a symptom of mental illness is derived from clinical populations, and it is important to question how far this can generalize to the general population.”
Some students admitted to hurting themselves on purpose because of being stressed or upset by banging their head or body on an object, cutting themselves, stabbing themselves, as well as hitting, biting, or burning themselves (Blazer, 2010). When the effects of the pressure and stress on students is this drastic, it is extremely important that something is done about it. Its time that students were encouraged to become well-rounded individuals instead of focusing on having a perfect GPA. Its time to make school something that the students can look back on and think that it was a meaningful time where they learned a lot about life instead of a time where they thought they would have a break down because they got a low score on a test. School should be a time to make mistakes in a safe environment that they can learn from, not a place where they are petrified to make a mistake for fear of retribution on their grade cards.
