In the following case, Luke is involved in a very perplexing conflict, or Ethical dilemma. This situation is an Ethical dilemma, and not just a regular “everyday” problem, because to Luke there might not be an obvious answer. He can also be thinking that both choices, keeping his commitments of confidentiality and telling his brother, Owen, are both correct things to do. If Luke tells his brother about the project, then he might concur with a theory known as Breach of confidentiality. “Breach of confidentiality occurs when someone gives away information that was supposed to be kept private.” (GENB4350 Online Lecture, Ethical Reasoning 1). By Luke breaching information that is supposed to be kept secret, he will betray the trust of his company …show more content…
If Owen knew about the decrease in value, he would accept the offer, but how will he find out if Luke doesn’t want to breach the information? In this case there is an issue between being honest to your company and being loyal to your brother. This case depicts an issue regarding Personal ethics, which are “principles that a person follows in order to uphold his/her morals,” (GENB4350 Online Lecture, Ethical Reasoning 1), because Luke might believe that it is right to tell his brother regardless if it is viewed as unethical. The reason this situation is an ethical issue is because Luke can betray the trust of his employers, while helping his brother make an easy decision, given the fact that he knows the value of his property will decline drastically in the near future.
ETHICAL LENSES AND ANALYSIS
In this meticulous case Luke can use two Ethical lenses that can help with his decision, the Utilitarianism and Universal Ethics (Categorical Imperative) approach. The Utilitarianism approach states, “A decision is ethical if it benefits the majority of stakeholders.” (GENB4350 Online Lecture, Ethical Reasoning 1). According to Emmanuel Kant, the Universal Ethics (Categorical Imperative) approach states, “that a person should always, without exception, act as if his

He might become the bad guy in the eyes of the community because he would be the leader of the project that affects their homes. Let’s say Luke doesn’t tell Owen and Owen accepts the offer, Luke wouldn’t just affect himself, Owen, or ABC Company, but also the buyer of Owen’s home. Luke would affect the potential buyer by selling him a property that he knows wouldn’t be worth much in the future. It can be considered an unethical manner to sell someone a product that you know will diminish in value in the
Cruickshank, Garth & Romano is a new real estate appraisal and consulting firm. Richard Romano, a principle of the firm, had just completed a preliminary evaluation of a property for a new client, Watson & Musico. However, his client refuses to accept the appraisal and requested the value be increased by $4.5 million or else they would take their business elsewhere. Richard's decision on his client's estimate could have great impact on Cruickshank, Garth & Romano's success and its ability to develop new clients. The new firm could ill-afford to pass up on doing Watson & Musico's business but Richard also wanted to complete the appraisal according to his best estimate of the current market value of the property. This paper will analyze the ethical issues and alternatives for this case.
So, Luke should question himself about what type of person he wants to be or what virtues make him who he is. Since Luke is an employee of a company, we can assume that honesty and trustworthiness are two possible traits from Luke’s character. If Luke believes honest is the most important value to consider in decision making progress, then Luke should be honest to his brother about the upcoming project from his company, and its impacts onto the area. However, if trustworthiness is Luke’s main principle, then his decision should reflect how he can be trusted. As an employee who is in charge of ABC Company’s project, Luke should be reliable for keeping secret about the confidential information regard to the project. He should not reveal to any outsider of the company, even to his brother Owen. When Luke chooses this decision, he succeeds as a trustworthy employee, but fails as an honesty brother to Owen. Luke’s decision help to bring profit to the company, but in the other way it brings loss to Owen. He knew the value of Owen’s property may drop when the project is announced to public, yet he does not inform Owen about this. His silence will damage the relationship between him and his brother as when Owen finds out in the
Silence or Omission: Not coming forward or withholding important information can be highly unethical if it leads to harm or damages
The method of ethical decision making which was developed by Dr. Cathryn A. Baird presented two components contained in all ethical decisions which are; The Four ethical Lenses and the 4+1 Decision process. The Four Ethical Lenses issue claims that different ethical theories and the means in which we tend to approach the situations which form part of our ethical traditions are looked at in four different perspectives. From each perspective there are different values on which to decide whether the action taken is either ethical or not and each lens also lays emphasis on determining whether the decision made is of ethical requirement. In the 4+1 Decision Process, people who are responsible for making final decisions in an organization do it using four specific decision making steps and eventually will end up with one extra decision which gives a chance to reflect. The 4+1 decision process allows the decision makers to give solutions when faced with complicated ethical issues (John Muir Institute for Environmental Studies, 2000).

Abortion has been a political, social, and personal topic for many years now. The woman’s right to choose has become a law that is still debated, argued and fought over, even though it has been passed. This paper will examine a specific example where abortion is encouraged, identify the Christian world views beliefs and resolution as well as the consequences of such, and compare them with another option.
This relates to ethical issues as it is difficult to decide when confidential information should be shared, as described in my ethical dilemma above.
At times in a person’s life, they might come across a few situations that leave them with a major decision between two or more options that challenge what they believe or what they might think is wrong or right. These are known as ethical dilemmas. Be it seeing a friend steal something and choosing between being honest and speaking up or letting it go. It can also be getting paid more than you earned and deciding if you’re going to be greedy and keep the money or return it. We run into these situations in our lives, some bigger and more influential on our destiny’s while others are small with no real consequences.
The ethical dilemma in this case is one that Daniel Potter is faced with. Daniel is a staff
The second ethical perspective to be observed is utilitarianism. Unlike egoism, utilitarianism focuses on the consequences involved with a decision, and the severity of those consequences. Furthermore, utilitarians would select the decision that has the least amount of consequences involved with a situation. In this situation, this ethical perspective would view leaking company secrets as an unethical action because it would consider all the consequences that would be involved with leaking the company secrets. In Lockheed Martin and Boeing case, a utilitarian would not have gone about the situation like Ken Branch did because the utilitarian would understand if they were caught providing Lockheed Martin company secrets they would lose their
According to the scenario, Jacob and Krystal worked in an ad agency that started five years ago in Topeka, Kansas. The ad agency was barely making a profit and needed a large client, which led the agency to put in a bid for a city government contract. Due to Jacob’s son being sick, he was preoccupied with taking care of his son and left Krystal with most of the work. Krystal prepared the presentation and got with Jacob the day before the final meeting with the client. Krystal knew that Jacob has good speaking skills and they both decided that Jacob would do the presentation. Jacob’s presentation was a success and they successfully sealed the contract. The owners of the company were so impressed and gave Jacob a bonus check of $10,000. Jacob saw this opportunity where he could use the money for his son’s medical bills. However, he knew that Krystal did most of the work and deserved the bonus money. Jacob is disappointed and his situation has left him with a decision on what to do with the money. This case study will pinpoint Jacob’s ethical dilemma and what ethical action he should take. Also, the roles and responsibilities of an employee dealing with an ethical situation as well as the ways of an organization to maintain ethical practices in the workplace
This paper will examine this ethical dilemma further, including why it is an important issue...
In this case study, I am a compliance manager who is experiencing an ethical dilemma that would affect many people no matter the decision I make. To be specific, I am an environmental compliance manager for a small business. My factory has barely passed the last emission report and I know now that on the next report it will show my levels will have surpassed the legal limit for emission levels. I am faced with two options. The initial option is to buy the expensive new technology needed to control emission levels. However, in order to balance the cost I would have to reduce the amount of people on payroll. The alternative is to forge the reports to show we are within the legal limits until I can find a cheaper solution later. I will be responding
In deciding whether or not to procure stock based off the information I acquired unintentionally; I decided the ethical dilemma deontology is the most ideal of why I would not purchase the stock. Ethics are defined as moral principles that governs one's behavior. Although, I would be saving my loved one life possess the upmost importance to me, I cannot compromise my integrity or morals. First and foremost, I was not privy to the information that resulted in me acquiring the stock. If I had been privileged to such information my company would have the expectation of me not using the information for personal gain. There is a certain level of wrongness to violate my company's trust by using the classified information for personal gain. One could
