Carrie Kabak’s debut novel Cover the Butter (Dutton/Penguin (USA), 2005) is a heart-warming and, at times heart-breaking, coming-of-age tale of a forty-something British housewife who realizes that it is never too late to cut the apron strings. The protagonist and narrator, Katie Cadogan, returns from holiday to find that her son all but destroyed the house she spent months restoring for him. Stupefied by the wreckage, Katie takes a wine induced journey back to the day she was given her first bra. Beginning in the mid-sixties and ending in the mid-nineties, Katie recounts her oft times hilarious adventures growing up in a small English village with a controlling mother, a spineless father, two devoted best friends, and a few bad men. She allows nearly everyone in her life to define who she is and what she will become. As is true for most people, Katie’s instability and lack of personal strength is a reflection of the emotional abuse sustained in her wonder years. Her mother, Biddy Cadogan, is the primary barrier between Katie and self-determination. Biddy is the quintessential Irish Catholic mother devoted to improving what she believes is Katie’s wayward behavior. She scrutinizes and commands every aspect of Katie’s life, including her friends, her clothes, her hair, and her weight. Although this may seem typical of an overly protective mother, Biddy’s comportment is that of a woman bitter and angry about her past. She was raised by a woman equally as stouthearted and then married a man, Tom Cadogan, on whose seeming lack of ambition she blames her less than luxurious life. Biddy’s self-consciousness about her socioeconomic status is cleverly conveyed through her obsession with appearances. She shops for new clothes virtually everyday, she exaggerates her own family’s status while criticizing her husband’s modest background, and is fixated on Katie studying the right course at the right university and marrying the right man. In the novel, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, we learn the story of a abused girl trying to survive the world that she was placed in. She never had any friends until she was in the sixth grade, when she met Eric. Eric was also an outcast because of his weight. The other kids call him Moby because he's on the swim team and that's their clever way of saying that he is like a whale. Sarah and Eric have been friends for six years and when she stops talking and is placed in a psych ward, he questions the situation right away. Eric visits her frequently to try and get her to talk. Sarah finds a way to tell Eric part of the reason why she hasn't been talking. She is trying her best to stay away from her abusive father. In this story, Eric is fighting his hardest for someone that doesn't want his help which makes the situation more difficult, but not impossible. As you follow the story of Sarah and her struggles, the theme will scream at you what real friendship is.
In a short story called, “Thank you ma’am”, the author is trying to convey the theme, or message, of the importance of showing random acts of kindness towards others to help institute change. Mrs.J show one act of kindness when she washes his face. Another when she makes Roger food at her house. Mrs.J is kind and shows multiple examples throughout the story.
Some main themes in chapter 12 and 13 revolve around new ways of life, ideology, and America’s perpetuating wars. Biddy Mason’s life growing up around these multiple changes in her culture clearly reflect her actions when she is older. Mason worked on a plantation, coerced miscegenation, was heavily exposed to the new Mormon faith, walked across the continent, legally upheld emancipation, and was successful later on in California formerly known as Mexico. Biddy Mason’s successful life was possible because of the world she lived in and the newly added rights to African American women.
For both Janie and Arvay, inner turmoil is quelled into a role that reconciles both themselves and their relationship with their men. And, perhaps most remarkably, this idealization of their partners persists despite – indeed, is even enhanced by – the fact that both women see their former love interests, those who came before Tea Cake and Jim, as now standing on cracked or even shattered pedestals. Both Janie and Arvay in the end take comfort in their new-found roles and those men who best compel them to adopt these roles.
In fact, Cahan provides insight into this briefly, by mentioning that it was “an open secret” that many of Goldy’s guests could not attend the wedding due to “a period of hard times” (Cahan, 285). Therefore, illustrating that the economic hardship was not reserved just to the couple, but for the entire body of guests invited; thus, Cahan provides the opportunity for the character of Goldy to take these realizations and grow emotionally as a character. Most importantly, Goldy begins to realize the lack of joy that permeates throughout the evening by stating during her dinner that “everything is lost,” and when she states that she is the one “to blame for it all,” readers begin to realize that she is taking accountability for the foolishness of her material-driven ideals given the circumstances (Cahan, 287). In other words, Goldy now demonstrates a sense of emotional growth by knowing that all of the consequences to follow, such as a lack of furnishings and such, are all rooted from her unrealistic
As Janie is growing up she has to learn to accept her Nanny’s belief of how a woman is supposed to live in society. Nanny grew up in slavery so she believes that the role of men is to support his wife financially. Nanny thinks Janie should marry a man according to how successful he is and Janie should keep up the household responsibilities. In the novel, Beauty by Robin Mc Kinley, the family of a wealthy merchant looses their wealth when the shipment boats get lost at sea. There are three daughters named Hope, Grace, and Honour, whom is nicknamed Beauty, and a father. The family is forced to move to the country and start a life more modest than accustomed. After the family adapts to country life, one of the older sisters gets married to an iron worker who used to work at the shipyard owned by the father. They have babies. Life goes on in the country.
Janie's Grandmother is the first bud on her tree. She raised Janie since she was a little girl. Her grandmother is in some respects a gardener pruning and shaping the future for her granddaughter. She tries to instill a strong belief in marriage. To her marriage is the only way that Janie will survive in life. What Nanny does not realize is that Janie has the potential to make her own path in the walk of life. This blinds nanny, because she is a victim of the horrible effects of slavery. She really tries to convey to Janie that she has her own voice but she forces her into a position where that voice is silenced and there for condemning all hopes of her Granddaughter become the woman that she is capable of being.
When Janie was a young girl, she allowed her grandmother’s opinions and beliefs on happiness dictate how she lived her life, which ultimately led to her misery. When Janie was caught kissing Johnny Taylor under the pear tree at the age of sixteen, Nanny told Janie how she wanted her to live her life: “Ah wanted yuh to school out and pick from a higher bush and a sweeter berry. But dat ain’t yo’ idea, Ah see” (Hurston 13). Since she was young, Janie had been mesmerized with the pear tree, the emblem of natural harmony and contentment. She had come to the realization that her dream was to wrestle with life, and just as she was experiencing this freedom, Nanny, the only family she was in contact with, challenged her plans. Nanny took her own experiences as a malnourished slave and condemned Janie to the life in which she was never able to have; Nanny wanted her granddaughter to marry a man with money so that he could support her; she believed that whatever Janie’s assertion of happiness was, was wrong and pointless. When Nanny told Janie that she wanted her to marry a rich man, she spoke with a superior tone that revealed her belittlement towards Janie. Janie’s life with Joe fulfilled a need -- she had no financial worries and was more than set for life. She had a beautiful white home, a neat lawn and garden, a successful husband, and lots of cash. Everything was clean, almost too clean. A sense of restraint is present in this setting, and this relates to the work as a whole due to the fact that this is the epitome of unhappiness for Janie.
Janie who continually finds her being defined by other people rather than by herself never feels loved, either by her parents or by anybody else. Her mother abandoned her shortly after giving birth to her. All she had was her grandmother, Nanny, who protected and looked after her when she was a child. But that was it. She was even unaware that she is black until, at age six, she saw a photograph of herself. Her Nanny who was enslaved most of her lifetime only told her that a woman can only be happy when she marries someone who can provide wealth, property, and security to his wife. Nanny knew nothing about love since she never experienced it. She regarded that matter as unnecessary for her as well as for Janie. And for that reason, when Janie was about to enter her womanhood in searching for that love, Nanny forced her to marry Mr. Logan Killicks, a much older man that can offer Janie the protection and security, plus a sixty-acre potato farm. Although Janie in her heart never approves what her Nanny forced her to do, she did it anyway. She convinced herself that by the time she became Mrs. Killick, she would get that love, which turned out to be wrong.
It is easily inferred that the narrator sees her mother as extremely beautiful. She even sits and thinks about it in class. She describes her mother s head as if it should be on a sixpence, (Kincaid 807). She stares at her mother s long neck and hair and glorifies virtually every feature. The narrator even makes reference to the fact that many women had loved her father, but he chose her regal mother. This heightens her mother s stature in the narrator s eyes. Through her thorough description of her mother s beauty, the narrator conveys her obsession with every detail of her mother. Although the narrator s adoration for her mother s physical appearance is vast, the longing to be like her and be with her is even greater.
Peter and Clarissa’s memories of the days spent at Bourton have a profound effect on them both and are still very much a part of them. These images of their younger selves are not broad, all-encompassing mental pictures, but rather the bits and pieces of life that create personality and identity. Peter remembers various idiosyncracies about Clarissa, and she does the same about him. They remember each other by “the colours, salts, tones of existence,” the very essence that makes human beings original and unique: the fabric of their true identities (30). Clarissa Dalloway is content with her life with Richard, is content to give her party on a beautiful June evening, but she does regret at times that she can’t “have her life over again” (10).

Aubery Tanqueray, a self-made man, is a Widower at the age of Forty two with a beautiful teenage daughter, Ellean whom he seems very protective over. His deceased wife, the first Mrs. Tanqueray was "an iceberg," stiff, and assertive, alive as well as dead (13). She had ironically died of a fever "the only warmth, I believe, that ever came to that woman's body" (14). Now alone because his daughter is away at a nunnery he's found someone that can add a little life to his elite, high class existence; a little someone, we learn, that has a past that doesn't quite fit in with the rest of his friends.
