Choosing Diagnostic Radiography: A Personal Journey

I have always admired the work of healthcare professionals and other emergency services through not only being witness to, but also being on the receiving end of the amazing and professional care

that the all healthcare staff give. They did not only care for the patient but also calmed the others that were around; because of this I have been inspired to follow the medical career path.

Because of its speciality, diagnostic radiography would be the career path I would like to take. I feel that I would be a very successful Radiographer because I believe that my personality is a perfect fit for a successful radiologist. - I'm responsible, caring, supportive, trusting, and empathetic and I believe I am always positive with a smile

on my face.
Since primary school I always had a caring side to me, I was offered to take a peer mediating course that would help other children in my school with problems. I took this through to secondary school where I shadowed the school counsellor and had my own time to help and speak with other members of my school. I also coached athletics as well as my own training for athletics, football, rugby and volleyball for which I played/participated at county level or equivalent in some of these sports. This has not only made me physically able in many departments, it has made me improve my time keeping and the ability to adapt and change in situations quickly and efficiently. I also managed and coached a football team. I have been successful in both my personal sports career and in coaching being awarded many medals and trophies.

My ability to adapt and change in situations helped me when I was working for Camp America where flexibility was a key aspect of my work.

During the three months living and working in America at an inner city, underprivileged, disabled and able bodied summer camp I learnt how to deal with stressful situations in unfamiliar surroundings, and I believe I equipped myself excellently in these situations through my own self evaluation and the feedback I received from the camp director. Because of my abilities I was chosen to become a head counsellor for an encampment. This entailed leading and planning all activities for the other 12 staff and the 36 children that were under my guidance. Any problems which should have arisen I would use the leadership skills I have learnt from coaching to help me get to a solution. Being at a camp like this has helped heighten my awareness of not only physical disabilities; but also the emotional turmoil that people occur, and how to deal with certain situations in different ways. Because of the close quarters in which I lived and worked, communication was a key aspect to make sure everything ran smoothly. I also had to be considerate of everyone as not one person was the same, from race to religion to swimming ability to reading ability, and I believe this has helped me become a well-rounded individual with compassion and understanding of all people and

cultures.
Through both camp, school and my various other jobs in all walks of life I have developed skills of working in a team, always willing to listen and accept others advice as well as offer my own.

Through my various jobs and experiences I have gathered many skills that I use and can transfer to everyday life and for which I am confident will help me in the study of Diagnostic Radiography. I have experience as a deputy manager so I am highly organised, which will ensure my studies are thorough and complete. My work as a Football manager, school's athletic captain and in Camp America have helped me gain leadership and communication skills as well as the ability to work as part of a

team.
My computer experience during ICT at GCSE level has made me a skilled user of computer programmes with my qualifications in ECDL, and this had made me confident in presentations which will help me in my studies, as well as being a confident radiographer. I am also a very keen photographer, acquiring over ten thousand followers on photo based app instagram. I am also very tech savvy having many different pieces of equipment and tools which I believe would be a useful asset in my studies.
The continuing development within Radiographer and the healthcare world is also a selling point to me. I am also looking to learn nee things and keep up to date. I believe I have the drive, abilities, focus and qualities to become a successful radiographer and do whatever I can to help and advance the healthcare profession.
