Therefore, the decision is decided based on a student wanting eight years of college, tons of paperwork, and the liability. If he has the patience and dedication, he is capable of being a physical therapist. Once I learned about eight years of college and tons of paperwork, my decision changed. With others it can be different. I think the best part about physical therapy is helping people getting back on their feet, but I think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. Physical Therapists (PT) usually work in private offices. Other places that you might see a physical therapist are clinics, hospitals, patient’s homes, and nursing homes. They usually spend most of their time on their feet, working actively with their patients. To be able to stay on their feet all day physical therapists must be physically fit, some physical therapists even do the same exercises as their patients to maintain a fit body.
A physical therapist has many important duties. One duty of a physical therapist is to examine the patient’s movement by having them do a series of exercises. These exercises include walking and standing, or movement of the injury. After they examine the patient they plan a care plan for the patient. The care plan is different for every patient. Another duty of a physical therapist is to use the exercises, stretches, hands-on physical therapy and equipment to help ease pain, increase mobility, prevent further injury or pain, and make easier health and wellness for the patient. Also to educate the family about what to expect of the recovery process. The average salary of a physical therapist is $79, 860. Some other jobs that are in the same “career cluster” are speech therapist, occupational therapist, chiropody, flexibility/ strength trainer, and audiology. Entering my first year of college I didn’t have any idea of what I wanted to do. I still didn’t choose a major let alone a career. I was stuck in between wanting to make enough money that my family would be taken care of financially and choosing a career that I wouldn’t mind going in to work every day. The one thing that I was certain of was that I wanted to be able to help people in whatever I chose to do. During my undergraduate career, I have been heavily exposed to the field of physical medicine. I have worked as a PT technician for almost a year in an outpatient clinic, and have actively sought out other observation in other physical therapy settings. I have had the chance to observe PTs in acute care at the local hospital and a pediatric therapy center. Through these observation opportunities, I have a gained a great understanding of the role the physical therapist has within society as well as the benefits of participating in physical therapy. Physical therapists are allied health professionals who collaborate with other health care providers to assess, develop and organize a treatment plan to ultimately improve the quality of life for their patients. It is the duty of the physical therapists to create and participate in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, alleviate pain, increase strength, and enhance or remedy incapacitating conditions resulting from injury or disease. It is crucial that physical therapists have the ability to properly educate individuals on their role and purpose in the patients’ continuum of care. PTs must also inform people about the great benefits of participating in physical therapy.
