The transitions of care meeting was an insightful look into the decision making process that determines the next course of action and the discharge date and conditions for a patient. One aspect of the healthcare system that I learned about was the significant role insurance plays in determining the care a patient receives. As medical students we are often thought about giving the best possible treatment. However, realistically the care that a physician is able to provide is certainly influenced by the insurance that a patient has. For instance, although the physicians wanted to transfer the patient to an acute rehabilitation facility, the insurance only covered sub-acute rehabilitation and thus, the doctors decided to transfer the patient to sub-acute rehabilitation care. In addition, one thing that I noticed …show more content…
Instead of just relinquishing responsibilities as soon as a patient is discharged, they take into account if a patient has a place to live, if they have family members who will take care of them and if are they able to obtain the resources to ensure that their health is maintained. Furthermore, I learned that it is important to consider all the variables associated with transferring a patient to a specific location and ensuring that the transfer to that location is justified. One of the doctors was upset that his patient was transferred to H green where there is no way to monitor a patient. The patient was severely hypoxic by the time this doctor got to her because no one monitored her declining O2 stats. Additionally, I learned that there are medical shelters available where patients can be transferred to and where they will receive continued long term medical care. One such resource that the doctors discussed was the Broadway House which provide shelter for patients with HIV. I never knew such institutions for care existed for our
Managed care reimbursement models have contributed to risk avoidance by negotiating discounts, discouraging use, and denying payments for charges that appear to be false. Health care reform has increased awareness to the quality of care providers give, thus shifting the responsibility onto the provider to provide quality care or else be forced to receive reduced reimbursements (Buff & Terrell,
Introduction The introduction of the printing press changed society permanently. Along with this invention came the emergence of mass production of texts. Suddenly, information could be efficiently replicated, thus facilitating the dissemination process. Widespread alphabetic literacy, as Havelock states, could finally become a reality.
According the National Transitions of Care Coalition (2008), improving communication in transitions of care, implementing standardized electronic medical records, establishing points of accountability for sending and receiving care, and expanding roles of pharmacists in transitions of care all aid in the continuity of care and result in positive patient outcomes. However, often the expectations of transitions of care fall short because team members are unsure of their role and the information that should be relayed. The patient’s risk for harm may have been increased when she was discharged
On February 14th I spent a day doing something I never thought I would do in a million years, I went to hospice. I always thought I would hate hospice, but I actually didn’t mind it too much, it isn’t a job I see myself doing in the future but it is a job that I understand why people do it and why they enjoy it. During this observation I was touched by how much these nurses really seem to care for each of the patients that they have.
Once a physician-patient treatment relationship exists, the physician must provide all necessary treatment to the patient, the physician is liable for care and the intentional refusal of care is Abandonment. Patient abandonment is defined as the unilateral withdrawal by a physician from a patient's care without first formally transferring that care to another qualified physician who is acceptable to the patient. Abandonment is not only ethically problematic but also a defining act of unprofessional conduct (Crausman, 2004). Patients must also always have access to services in emergency circumstances.
During the 1980’s, medical-related situations continuously occurred that made patients question their insurance policies as well as the privacy of their health care. Congress worked to create a bill containing strict rules regarding insurance policies and availability for one to keep their insurance if they are to move jobs. These rules were soon applied to all medical facilities and faculty and titled the “Health Insuran...
Another downfall to HMO coverage is selective-contracting. This is a process where hospitals deny treatment to patients because their...
Health insurance is currently an important issue in the United States. Everyday more and more Americans become uninsured due to job loss and an increase in premiums. These Americans add to the ever growing population of 45.7 million people who are currently uninsured (Bialik). Moreover only 27% of those uninsured are under the age of 65 (NCHC). This is staggering considering most of those who are uninsured have, or soon will, suffer from some sort of illness or injury. As a result they will not be able to afford proper treatment. Insurance premiums can range in cost from fifty dollars per month, to fifteen hundred dollars per month (Kreidler). An individual’s premium is determined by factors they choose as well as other factors looked at by their provider. The cost of health insurance in America varies depending on the controllable factors, like particular insurance policies, and uncontrollable factors, like age.
The AA meeting I attended took place at a church. The church that holds the meeting has a beginner AA meeting that meets Monday nights at 7 pm. However, I decided to go to the regularly meeting which takes place an hour later at 8 pm. I felt as though I would get more out of the regular meetings and get a sense of what regular AA members talk about. Before arriving at the meeting, I was a little anxious because I felt like as though I would be out of place, and I would be intruding on the members who come to the meetings for support. Also before attending, for some unknown reason, I imagined the meeting would to be similar to AA meeting featured in movies. Contrary to what I thought, the meeting was completely different. When I arrived at
Therapy Analysis The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficacy of my work as a co-therapist during the fifth session with the simulated couple Katy and Michelle. I will discuss our therapy agenda and the goals we hope to attain during the session. It is prudent to begin by giving a brief outline of the couple’s present problem and the patterns of dysfunction that I have identified within their relationship. In my opinion, it is the therapist’s job to recognize patterns and behaviors that disrupt the intimate bond between the partners.
This concept was a hard one to grasp. For my interview summary papers, I decided to interview my preceptor over the health care and different insurance policies. One thing that was brought up was the requirements on the insurance policies constantly changing. It could be one way the first day but then they add more information that will eliminate several people from getting that insurance. There are medical insurance companies that provide help for people who are do not make enough money but they often will deny people service due to making too much money.
Group therapy is considered one of the most resourceful forms of therapy. The benefits to group therapy can be both cost-effective and a great means of support (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2014). The process of experiencing ideas and viewpoints expressed by your peers allows group members to become more susceptible to the counseling procedure. Group counseling also helps individuals to feel a sense of belonging due to similar situations and experiences shared by the group. The sense of support from group members can be an excellent means towards developing long-lasting relationships and developing communication skills needed to move forward during the counseling phase. In this paper, I will discuss my experiences throughout the group-counseling phase.
...onship with the healthcare provider. If a person understands what their rights and responsibilities mean and that they have not just signed a paper required by law; they can better understand what is needed to get the best out of the healthcare system. The person will be able to understand that they do have options and they can make their own choices. Also, one provider is not the final word when they are receiving services.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. We were able to learn different types of concept in the textbook and utilized it as a team to complete certain tasks. The three concepts that impacted my team and I are human
As a member of the West Fannin Elementary Intervention team, where I work with students that need extra help in reading and math, I have learned to embrace change. My job and what I do change from day to day and week to week. I work with groups of students that are all in the RTI program and are all on different tiers. I work with these students sometimes just for a few weeks while others I may work with for the whole year. Then throughout the year I have new students that join my groups, and I have to change what I was doing to accommodate the learning needs of the new students and find a way to balance out their needs with the needs of the students that I have already been working with.
