A few ways to stay safe in your home is to install a battery-operated CO detector in your home. Check and replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. Another way is too when you buy gas equipment, buy only equipment carrying the seal of a national testing agency, such as Underwriters’ Laboratories seal. One last tip is to make sure gas appliances are vented correctly and never ever use a generator inside your home unless it is seated less than 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. CO2 is used in solid, liquid, and gas forms in a variety of industrial processes. These include: beverage carbonation, dry ice, welding and chemicals manufacturing. It is produced by the combustion of all carbonaceous fuels and can be recovered in an abundance of ways. It is widely used today as a by-product of synthetic ammonia production, fermentation, and from flue gases by absorption process. For this research paper, I chose to discuss the Louisiana air quality and its effects on the community. I was raised here in Baker, Louisiana which is north of Baton Rouge. Growing up I noticed something very striking and odd. We are overly exposed to chemical plants and their outputs. Driving around Baton Rouge at night and seeing a distant flame I often wonder what it really was. I wonder how this was affecting the community. How was this affecting our health? Upon doing research, I discovered it is called upset emissions. Upset emissions are unplanned events which release VOCs into the air. The Bucket Brigade which is an anti-energy group refers to emissions as accidents. Every year they release an annual report which gives information on the State of Louisiana air quality. A group called Energize LA made a rebuttal against the report. They argued that the Bucket Brigade facts were inaccurate. The views of both will be explained in detail. For this research paper, there will be a discussion on the upset emission effects on communities and health. As well how it correlates to the previous class discussions on the Clean Air Act.

Carbon Monoxide is a colourless and inodorous toxic gas produced through the incomplete combustion of different carbon-based fuels, such as in products and apparatuses motorised by internal combustion engines (Carbon Monoxide Questions and Answers, n.d.), that have failed to convert carbon or carbon-based fuels into carbon dioxide (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2014). CO production can also occur naturally when volcanoes erupt, releasing the poisonous gas into the atmosphere. CO is used as an aid to engineer organic and inorganic chemical products (Encyclopædia Britannica, 2014), in fuel gas mixtures for heating in metal production, pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing, to reduce ores and make metal carbonyls, and to fabricate and renew catalysts. “High purity CO is also used for electronic and semiconductor applications” (The Linde Group, 2013). Figure 1 shows the general equation for the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons to produce carbon monoxide.
Every so often, a story on the news will be shared about someone who has died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The thought of this actually happening to yourself or someone you know is a scary one and not so unrealistic. Widely known as the “silent killer,” carbon monoxide has no odor, no color, and no taste. Without a detector, it is difficult to tell if high levels of carbon monoxide are existent. If the early signs of high carbon monoxide levels are not detected, people who are subjected to these high levels are likely to lose consciousness and possibly die (New York State Department of Health, 2014).

Many health issues are caused by smoking cigarettes, but cardiovascular disease and lung cancer are the main effects of it. Carbon monoxide is the chemical compound found in cigarettes that causes cardiovascular disease; it “reduces the blood 's capacity to carry oxygen to heart and other organs thus causing angina or chest pain, aneurysm, stroke and gangrene” (Anurupa). According to Dr. Anurupa, “smoking can cause the blood to clot up because the carbon monoxide thickens the blood and it will increase the fatty substances in the blood stream, as a result of heart attack.” Nicotine is another harmful chemical compound within cigarettes that can cause harmful health effects to the body, like lung cancer. With lung cancer, smokers have “difficulties with breathing, feeling weak, and keep coughing” (Yoder 1). The chances for smokers to recover from lung cancer are low even if it is discovered in an early stage; this is a disease that takes a long period of time to recover. Smokers should not have to suffer from these horrible health problems. Banning smoking in all indoor and outdoor public places will help to reduce the number of smokers suffering from these horrible
