To me, photos have always been a way tangible way holding onto my favorite memories. It makes me happy to hold a small, shiny picture and be transported back in time. The way a photo of the sun escaping below the ocean could bring back the feeling of wind rustling through my hair and across my skin, the aroma of sea salt wafting from the crashing waves makes me happy. Since I was young, I would go out of my way just to get the perfect snapshot and I find joy in capturing the true essence of a family member. Capturing people and life makes me happy, and photography will always be my favorite hobby and strongest passion.
As went through high school, I continued to love photography. I taught myself the ropes of Photoshop in extreme detail, and became editor of the yearbook. However, I developed an interest in the business world as well. My parents have always had the philosophy to do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. So with that in mind, I decided to combine my two interests and pursue a career as a photography business owner. Ideally, i’d love to specialize in vintage, outdoor, natural light senior photography. The struggle though, is the photography industry is going through some drastic changes. People are capturing life’s moments with their own digital cameras and smart phones. Free editing websites and apps are becoming incredibly popular. While at the same time, some with zero photography experience what-so-ever are trying their hand at the photography business part-time (Swanson). Competition in the photography industry is fierce. So in order to attract and maintain customers, a senior photographer must be vastly knowledgeable, distinctly noticeable, and creatively unafraid.

Photography allows us to maintain memories and relish them whenever we desire. Although some advocates might argue that people are no longer enjoying experiences instead taking more pictures, in the essay, “Why We Take Pictures”, by Susan Sontag, she conflates that photography can be used as a defense against anxiety and a tool of empowerment. I agree with Sontag on the significance of photographs and how it allows us to store a part of our extended relatives so we are able to hold on the memories of family. Therefore, we must appreciate how photography allows us to manage anxiety, express feelings and remember our loved ones.
With camera equipment simultaneously rising in capabilities and dropping in prices, it means more and more photographers have been able to make the leap from enthusiast to professional. For those already established in the industry, they might resent the added
At first glance, "This Is a Photograph of Me" by Margaret Atwood and "Photograph, 1958" by Patricia Young are strikingly similar works in that both poems utilize the imagery of a photograph as a communication device however, upon closer examination they differ markedly in the approach each poet takes in utilizing this same device. The similarities between these two poems are immediately obvious to the reader; both poems are written by female poets, both poems have the poet as the speaker, both poems describe how the poet feels about herself, and both poems utilize the photograph as a device to convey their message to the reader. Less obvious, is the differing approaches taken by each poet.
Kodak is the world’s foremost imaging innovator. George Eastman put the first simple camera into the hands of a world of consumers in 1888. In so doing, he made a cumbersome and complicated process easy to use and accessible to nearly everyone. Since that time, the Eastman Kodak Company has led the way with an abundance of new products and processes to make photography simpler, more useful and more enjoyable. With sales of $13.3 billion in 2006, the company is committed to a digitally oriented growth strategy focused on helping people better use meaningful images and information in their life and work. To begin with, photography appeared to me as something entertaining a simple step in which one took a camera and simply shot a photograph of oneself or a friend. When I was handed my schedule for Mrs. Jones’s class, I felt as if this class had in store a special reward for me. As the days went by, Instead of being anxious of getting out of class I had a craving for additional time in the class. The class kept my eyes glued to the screen ...

Have you ever seen a painting or picture that captivates you and directly stirs up emotion within you? More than likely, you have. Usually, viewers merely observe the picture and enjoy the way it looks and how it makes them feel. But, have you ever asked yourself, “why?” What about the picture makes it pleasing to the viewer? With each strategy the photographer uses creates their own touch and passion that floods all over the picture. The emotional connection nearly goes unnoticed for when the picture is well photographed, the viewers experience the sensation in their subconscious. This is one of the most powerful tools that a photographer holds in their hands. If one can become a master of manipulating how the photo affects its viewers, the said photographer can potentially maneuver people’s minds and thoughts with one click of a button. The time spent with my mentor has opened up the door for me to tap into that power though the use of background, focus, shutter speed, angles, and most importantly, lighting. Even with all these techniques, the person behind the camera must remember that creativity must be at the forefront of all operations. Caleno (2014), when writing about the basics of capturing a beautiful moment in a picture commented, “If we want to be creative we must drop these pre-conceptions and start looking at things from a small child’s innocence.”
From time to time, I like to look at picture from the past to remember and to learn about my childhood past. Some are even taking before color pictures existed,
Bullying is an issue that has been happening for years now, this is a continuous issue. “The word “bully” can be traced back as far as the 1530s. (Donegan 33). In its most uncomplicated sense bullying involves two people, a bully or intimidator, and a victim. The bully abuses the victim through physical, verbal, or other means in order to gain a sense of superiority and power” (Donegan 33-34). Bullying can happen among school children up to adults. “Bullying ranks high on the list of the tremendous challenges facing kids” (Kevorkian). Although most people who are the bullies are stronger and is attacking the weaker. Intimidators may possibly abuse their victims verbally, physically, or psychologically. Bullying is an act of unwanted and aggressive
Taking photographs and photography itself is a great tool of power in many different aspects of life that one might not realize day to day. Photography has the power to reveal things that if expressed in words, would cease to be as powerful a truth. It serves as evidence of something larger. Yes, photos can be manipulated- yet because they can it makes the viewer even more cautious and observant on the details of these photos. Taking pictures is so much more than what it is painted to be on the surface. It is not always superficial and inconsequential. If you look deeper into the photo meaning and the details about the photos’ source, you observe things you would have never seen otherwise, like the slight hint of sorrow on her face, the contradiction in human ability, and the subtle external truths about the reason we do things, such as take pictures.
Photography as a profession has developed along with the advancements of camera technology. Photographers can be seen everywhere, whether they are highly advanced or a just a mere amatuer. Many people find a living in this business by taking professional photographs for families, sports events, and even the traditional senior pictures.
