Cancer is a general term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body; it is caused by mutations to the original genetic code. Cancer, in its simplest explanation, is the uncontrolled growth of cells within the body resulting in the accumulation of large masses of cells, commonly known as tumours.
One significant Characteristic of cancer is the rapid multiplication of mutated cells that grows beyond their usual limits and result in tumours, some tumour cells also have the ability to break free from their original tumour and invade other parts of the body and spread to other organs, using the circulatory system as a carrier. This process is referred to as metastasis and is the major cause of death from cancer.
According to the WHO an estimated 8.2 million people die each year from cancer and cancer related issues, and this figure is expected to increase by 70% over the next two decade 1. The key focus from the WHO to try and combat this pandemic is to focus on prevention rather that cure, with the elimination/reduction key contributing factors which can lead to cell mutation e.g. tobacco, Alcohol and certain processed food types. However, this is no easy feat and control of these elements does not account for other influencing factor that lead to the growth of the rouge cells that result in cancerous tumours within the body.
The most common types of Cancer in males are Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and liver cancer, while breast, colorectal, lung, uterine cervix, and stomach cancer are the most common among women. Satraplatin, like Cisplatin and other analogues, also works by the formation of DNA adducts to inhibit cell replication and lead to Apoptosis. Satraplatin has demonstrated potent antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo against various tumor cell lines, including ovarian, cervical and lungs that are sensitive or resistant to cisplatin (8). Even though Satraplatin is still in the clinical phase and its full efficacy in its specific area of treatment remains to be understood, it has the advantage over cisplatin of a better toxicity profile and oral route of administration.
With the increasing focus from the pharmaceutical industry on trying to uncover the next breakthrough cancer therapy and ever advancing technologies available to support research and development activities, further discoveries within the Cisplatin family still remain to be unearthed.

Further research on this alternative model could lead to therapies that not only target the properties of the primary tumor but also those of the secondary tumor and save many from the burden of fighting cancer again.

Cancer is the term used to describe a group of diseases consisting of hundreds of ailments and although there exists so many different types of cancer, they all begin in a similar way. The body is made up of over a trillion cells, and cancer is the uncontrolled growth of malfunctioning cells in the body (Dawson, 1996). “Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a person’s life, normal cells divide faster to allow the person to grow. After the person becomes an adult, most cells divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells or to repair injuries” (American Cancer Society, 2012).
Cancer is a genetic disease because it can be traced to alteration within specific genes, but in most cases, it is not an inherited disease. The genetic alterations that lead to most cancers arise in the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of a somatic cell during the lifetime of affected individual. Because of these genetic changes, cancer cells proliferate uncontrollably, producing malignant tumour that invade surrounding healthy tissue. As long as the growth of tumour remains localized, the disease can usually be treated and cured by surgical removal of tumour. But malignant tumours tend to metastases, that is, to spawn cells that break away from the parent mass, enter the lymphatic or vascular circulation, and spread to distant sites in the body where they establish lethal secondary tumours (metastases) that are no longer amenable to surgical removal. Despite, various exogenous and endogenous factors are known to affect the normal pattern of cell growth, by which cell becomes a cancerous. Species specificity and identity of biological organisms maintain by the unchanged genomic structure throughout their life period. The ratio of cell growth and cell death is strictly balanced through developmental and homeostatic processes in multi-cellular organisms (Bolsover et al, 1997).
Over the years, our scientists and doctors have made a substantial amount of progress. As we prepare for the future, we must wonder if we will have enough doctors, nurses, and researchers who specialize in cancer. Even though we know a great deal about Biology, we will always continue to uncover new knowledge in the future. Hopefully our knowledge of Biology will help scientists and researchers to develop new cancer screening methods and cancer drugs that will be effective against cancer. An ideal solution would to be able to figure out how to destroy cancerous cells without them returning or spreading to other areas of the body, and without killing off healthy cells. Both these cell lines are known to express endogenous transporters (39) and results from these studies should be interpreted with caution. When uptake studies were done in LLC-PK1 wild type cells, dasatinib intracellular concentrations were found to be significantly increased in the presence of 50μM pazopanib and regorafenib. LLC-PK1 cells express endogenous BCRP and pazopanib and regorafenib were found to be significant BCRP inhibitors in our earlier uptake study with MDCK-II-BCRP cells. Therefore, it is likely that these endogenous BCRP transporters maybe responsible for the uptake change observed. Further, dasatinib intracellular concentrations significantly decreased in the presence of afatinib, bosutinib, gefitinib, imatinib, lapatinib, ponatinib, sunitinib and vandetanib. LLC-PK1 cells do not express OATP-C uptake transporters.(40) Dasatinib uptake studies in MDCK-II wild type cells revealed a slightly different trend. Among the 14 ingredients screened, 6 of them, namely, axitinib, erlotinib, imatinib, lapatinib, nilotinib and pazopanib exhibited a significant increase in dasatinib intracellular concentrations. MDCK-II cells have very little BCRP expression but have endogenous Pgp expression.
