What do you know about being Canadian? Test your knowledge.

Can you name two responsibilities of citizenship? What are three requirements you must meet in order to vote in a federal election? What is the meaning of the Remembrance Day poppy?

The answers are: obeying the law and voting in elections; being a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old and on the voters’ list; and to remember the sacrifice of Canadians who have served or died in the wars up to the present day.

It is a registered, national charitable organization. Its headquarters are located in Toronto, Ont. In 2009, The Historica Foundation of Canada and The Dominion Institute merged to create one organization. The organization was officially renamed to Historica Canada in Sept. 2013. Programs of Historica Canada, all of which are offered bilingually, “Reach more than eight million Canadians annually.”

President of Historica Canada, Anthony Wilson-Smith explained the philosophy behind the organization, “Our mission statement is we believe that Canada is trying to become a country where people of any age, background, or sexuality can be who and what they want to be, but also while contributing to the common good. We continuously, over time, have been trying to improve that. It’s important for us as Canadians to know Canada’s history in order to understand who we are today. It’s essential.”

Heritage Minutes is a collection of about 70 videos that recreate events of great importance in Canada’s history. The Memory Project is a program through which veterans share their experiences online or through classrooms and community projects. Passages Canada focuses on newcomers coming to Canada and sharing their experiences of immigration. Aboriginal Arts & Stories is a program aimed at youth, which “features submissions from Canada’s most talented young artists and writers from Indigenous communities.” The Citizenship Challenge involves having young Canadians answer the same questions as real-life applicants would during their Canadian Citizenship Test. This year’s Citizenship Challenge took place in Ottawa on Oct. 15. About 140 students from across the country participated in the program.
