Governance Structure
The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization which has a national office and various offices in the provinces throughout Canada. The national and provincial offices are accountable to a volunteer board of directors; their responsibilities include governance, leadership, public accountability, establishing the society’s nation-wide, and provincial priorities, and acting as a national trustee on behalf of Canadians. There are four levels of the governance structure of the society which includes National Board of Directors, British Columbia and Yukon Division Board of Directors, the Senior staff of the society, and the volunteers. chair and there are 16 board of directors on the provincial level which includes a board chair, vice chair, executive director, and board liaison. The Senior staff is present for both national and provincial level which includes the President and CEO, Executive Vice of Marketing and Communications, Executive Vice President of Finance and Operations, and the Vise president of the Human Resources department for the federal level. The provincial level senior staff consists of an executive director, vice president of cancer control, vice president of revenue development, and vice president of finance and administration. At the bottom of the structure are the volunteers and the leaders of the volunteers which help raise funds for the society. All these members of the society work together to keep the society functioning effectively and help raise funds for it to keep serving the community. Tax Receipts and Donations The Canadian Cancer Society automatically issues a tax receipt to any individual who donates a minimum of $20.00 and provides their full name and address. However, the cash or cheque donations are receipted before the end of the calendar year and are mailed to the mailing address provided. Also, the donors who make a donation of less than $20.00 are required to call the local Canadian Cancer Society office and request their tax receipt of their donation. The tax issuing receipt rules are different depending on who is making the donation, so Canadian Cancer Society offers a pamphlet for each of the three sections. The three sections include gifts from individuals, gifts from groups, and gifts from businesses. Mission Statement “The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer” (Canadian Cancer Society, 2017). As stated on the official website of the Canadian Cancer Society their mission statement is to totally destroy the disease of cancer and provide a better quality of life people suffering from cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society has an ongoing research where the researchers are trying to finding ways to get rid of cancer easily. Vision Statement The vision statement of Canadian Cancer Society is “Creating a world where no Canadian fears cancer” (Canadian Cancer Society, 2017). The society is conducting many studies regularly which helps them reach closer to their long-term goal. It is providing services to those who are suffering from cancer and help them get better and are saving lives as well. In addition, the Canadian Cancer Society has set guidelines for themselves as they work towards their vision which includes: Courage, Caring, Integrity, and Progressive. Courage means that the society values the determination of their volunteers and staff to take all the possible steps to make a positive change. Caring depicts that the society should treat all the individuals involved with respect and dignity. Last but not the least, Integrity represents that the society is honest and ethical in all that it does, and engage in responsible decision-making that reflects the highest standards of conduct. Lastly, Progressive describes that the society will with diverse communities and value the cultural perspective of all the individuals involved. Strategic Plan Cancer Society has developed a nationwide strategic plan which will guide how the society will work with Canadians to achieve its mission and fight back against cancer over the upcoming years. After 72 years, for the first time in 2010, the Cancer Society’s research is fully integrated into the strategic framework, nationally. “Our nationwide strategic plan clearly integrates and links research throughout all the work we do,” says Goodhand (Canadian Cancer Society, 2016). As stated in the 2010 Canadian Cancer Society’s e-newsletter of June 2010, the nationwide strategic plan builds on the powerful connections growing within the Canadian cancer research community. One of the biggest strategies the society implemented in 2010 is that now the society is looking at collaborations and partnerships with other organizations and are not working in isolations anymore. The Canadian cancer society has established a strategic framework which will help them reach their long-term goal of providing a cancer-free life to all the individuals suffering. Their main focus is to reduce cancer incidence, reduce cancer mortality rates, and provide enhanced quality of life for Canadians living with and beyond cancer. The cancer society will deter this by encouraging Canadians to adopt healthy behaviors, by organizing public policy and programs, and by generating knowledge about the causes of cancer, risk factors and behavior change to improve cancer prevention. To defeat the disease of cancer, the cancer society will encourage Canadians to participate in screening and early detection, public policy and programs that make early detection and quality cancer care available and assessable. After cancer has been determined and defeated, the Canadians will enhance their quality of life beyond cancer, and to avoid the disease in future, the society will provide programs which support for quality of life with beyond cancer. Marketing Plan The Canadian Cancer society markets to individuals all over the country to get donations and volunteers to keep the society running smoothly. It reaches out to the individuals by direct regional marketing campaigns where they organize cancer awareness events. The cancer society organizes many events throughout the year such as Relay for Life, Daffodil Month, and Cancer Fighters. The society promotes itself via television advertisements, radio advertisements, social media, and from their official website. SWOT Analysis Strengths - Well recognized and accredited organization with over 170,000 volunteers - Very interactive website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) to promote the cause Weaknesses - Mostly volunteer-based, hard to get people to commit their time for no money - It can be emotionally challenging for those volunteers to build relationships and connect with the patients Opportunities - Canadian Cancer Society can host many more fundraising events throughout Canada to gain donors and donations - Continue to work with the partners and increase the number of sponsors Threats - There are many other fundraising societies that can compete with Canadian Cancer Society for the donations - The events organized by other fundraising societies can take away the donors who would have donated to the Canadian Cancer Society otherwise Competitive Analysis Since there are many other fundraising organizations and societies present around the country who compete with each other for donations, it makes it hard for a society to get funds.
The main competitors of the Canadian Cancer Society include organizations like Red Cross, Heart and Stroke Foundation, UNICEF Canada. These are fairly large organizations who do similar events as the Cancer Society to seek donations from donors. Moreover, these organizations are regularly active on social media as well where they promote their cause, ask for donations, engage with the public around the world, and promote their events to the similar target market of the Canadian Cancer
Society. Target Market The target market of the Canadian Cancer Society are the individuals of the age between 14 years old to 18 years’ old who are looking for volunteer hours for their school. Along with the children, the parents of those children who are volunteering can get involved so they can supervise them as well as performing volunteering activities. In addition, the cancer society markets to those patients who have cured of cancer or the patients that are still suffering. They also reach out the families of those cancer patients to seek donations. Moreover, the cancer society has many programs where they reach out to the high school students to look for donations and volunteers and it also seeks help from the local residents of the country who are willing to donate. We support Canadian Cancer Society because it helps recover cancer patients without any cost and it also provides knowledge and awareness to individuals who are suffering. Along with helping cancer patients, this society also funds research to find cures for cancer. As per the stats provided on the official website of the Canadian Cancer Society, the research has advanced so much that in 1940, only about 25% of the Canadians with cancer would survive at least 5 years after diagnosis whereas today’s survival rate is 60%. (Canadian Cancer Society, 2018) In addition, the cancer society provides many services which are free of cost, confidential, and are available in multiple languages. The cancer society provides many services like peer support; which connects cancer patients with volunteers and trained caregivers. Also, the telephone helpline is available to people who want to quit smoking which reduces the chances of cancer in the future. Future of Canadian Cancer Society The Canadian Cancer Society has a bright future ahead because it is getting donations in a large amount from its donors and it is a successful non-profit. Many people are supporting this society because it is helping save lives of thousands of individuals nationally. Since it is a non-profit society, all the money earned goes towards helping people and towards the research improvement in the cure of cancer. Susan G Komen for the Cure is a very well know charity that raises funds for breast cancer. They host walks, sell merchandise, educate, and sponsor events. Every year they raise millions of dollars for research and to support those who have breast cancer. The charity originated in 1982 when Nancy G Brinker started it in honor of her sister Susan. Susan Passed away from breast cancer in 1980 and the charity was a part of Nancy’s promise to Susan that she would put a stop to breast cancer. For a long time Susan G Komen for the Cure has been considered one of the best cancer related charities there is, but lately it has come under fire.
Background Information In implementing a strategic plan for Coastal Medical Center, our consulting team has conducted many analyses and formed numerous strategies in order for Coastal Medical Center to be successful. Such assessments include an internal analysis, external analysis, gap analysis, and SWOT analysis. The SWOT analysis provides a breakdown of ways the organization can manage its negative aspects of weaknesses and threats to strategies a plan to overcome those concerns. In addition, the identifying of the strengths and opportunity in a SWOT analysis provides the bases of what the hospital has accomplished and how it should continue to manage those positive outcomes.

According to a “Fuel My Motivation” article (2010), this analysis considers internal influences that can positively or negatively affect our ability to achieve our goals. The internal factors are our strengths and weaknesses. Also considered are opportunities and threats, which are external influences that can have a positive or negative impact on the ability to achieve our goals.
