Over the years, the native plants in the environment have been overpowered by the foreign invasive species such as French broom, Scotch broom, and Reed canary grass. Due to this predicament, the native species populations have been decreasing and causing the biodiversity, or the diversity in an environment indicated by the numbers of different species of plants and animals, to decline as well. For example, in Monterey Bay, hundreds of native organisms are dying due to an invasive species known as French broom. Many native birds and animals refuse to eat this plant because it is not native; therefore, they starve to death because all of their other food sources have been depleted (Nichols). The IASPP shows the initiative Canada has taken to get rid of Scotch broom and reed canary grass, as listed on the website. Within Canada, the bar graph shows the number of projects funded by IASPP and in which territories or provinces it is located. As shown above, the most amount of projects funded by IASPP is 33 in British Columbia, however, it isn’t that much. Furthermore, according to the Convention on Biological Diversity, “Globalization has resulted in greater trade, transport, travel, and tourism, all of which can facilitate the introduction and spread of species that are not native to an area.
