Camera shot is one of the most basic part in making films or taking pictures. The camera man can take a picture in various ways. Typically, four kinds of shots exist: the long shot, the extreme long shot, the medium shot, and the close-up. All of them are used numerous times in a movie. The long shot is usually used to show the normal frame or characters with part of a background. For example, the long shot was used when a soldier fell from the castle during the battle scene in the Robin Hood. It had an emotional impact that made audiences realize how tall the castle was and feel how hurt it would be as the soldier fell down to the ground. The extreme long shot is often used to show the whole background or even bigger. In Robin Hood, the …show more content…
extreme long shot was used in the beginning of the movie. The movie started, and the view of the whole town and the forest appeared. The audiences got the idea of setting; it was during the night time, and the town was surrounded with forest. It had an emotional impact by making the audiences wonder about what is going to happen next. The middle shot is commonly used to show normal scenes of the movie. In this movie, the middle shot was used when Robin Hood had a trick game with a man who thought that no pea exists inside of cups. The camera just showed Robin Hood and the man, so the audiences could focus on that part. This shot had an emotional impact that made the audiences focus on the scene and guess together if the pea really existed inside of the cup as the man said confidently. Lastly, the close-up is usually used to show the specific part of the image in the movie. In the Robin Hood, the close-up was used when the King died during the battle. The camera was focused on the face of the king. This shot has an emotional impact that makes the audiences to feel pity over the king’s death.
They were also able to focus on what the king’s last will is. Also, it was used when Robin Hood shot an arrow to the head of an enemy, and it almost shot his face. It slightly missed him. This close-up shot helped to focus how close the arrow was and the tension of the battle. Like these examples of each shots, the impacts of different shots make the quality of the movie higher. In a movie, camera angles are also important part. Due to the angles, the view of the scene and focus can be changed. In Robin Hood, high camera angle is used in the beginning of the movie. The angle of the camera dropped form the top to the bottom as it showed the whole view of the background. It was not that effective to make an emotional response because the audiences could see the whole view, but nothing really worked emotionally. Normal angles are used numerous times in the movie. For example, normal angle was used when the characters looked and talked to each other. It was used for the most part of the movie since it helped to focus on a typical scene; therefore, it was not effective in making an emotional response. Low angle is used to show the huge height of an object. For example, low angle
was used when the soldiers shot arrows toward the soldiers on the top of the castle. The angle went from bottom to the top to show the arrows flew to the castle. It was effective in increasing an emotional response because it strengthened the tension of the battle scene how the soldiers fought over the enemies on the castle. Like these examples, using camera angles can be useful, but it is not as effective as shot. Costumes are really important in setting. They reflect the time and cultural difference of a typical time. Due to different social levels, many various types of clothes existed, and they showed the characteristics of the each levels. It is important to use right clothes and stuff especially in history movies, and the Robin Hood is one of them. For example, the king and queen wore the crowns on their heads and fancy clothes adorned with expensive jewelries. These costumes proved the highest level of rulers; they used fancy materials and tons of colors for the clothes. For another example, the soldiers wore armors in the battle. During this time, the soldiers wore steel armor that also covered their heads. Soldiers were usually recognized as upper class since they protected their country. Their costume showed their hard work and power. Last, the costume of church class clearly showed the characteristic of the class. In Robin Hood, the nuns wore their church clothe with white hats. They neatly tied their hairs and wore simple and cozy dresses with no jewelries. Their costumes helped to show their concise life style. These different clothes helped the audiences know the existence of the gap between different social hierarchies. The body language means a lot in a movie since people share the feelings of actors through their face expressions and body languages. The body language can give emotional effect and even further. In the battle scene of the movie, Robin Hood crouched down and slowly moved from side to side to avoid the enemies. He ran like a jaguar and got his company who was hanging on the wall of the castle. Moreover, he and the man who fought with him at the feast after the war stood strictly in front of the king who was going to punish them over the fight. His movements gave great impact to make the audiences share the tension and focus on the movie.

Film Noir was extremely trendy during the 1940’s. People were captivated by the way it expresses a mood of disillusionment and indistinctness between good and evil. Film Noir have key elements; crime, mystery, an anti-hero, femme fatale, and chiaroscuro lighting and camera angles. The Maltese Falcon is an example of film noir because of the usage of camera angles, lighting and ominous settings, as well as sinister characters as Samuel Spade, the anti-hero on a quest for meaning, who encounters the death of his partner but does not show any signs of remorse but instead for his greed for riches.
The first element is Camera distance; it is used in every scene and in every shot. It refers to how far away the camera is to the characters in the scene. Camera distance was developed in order to provide more to the mise-en-scene of a certain scene. “Mise-en-scene encompasses of variety of categories related to the staging of an action”(Belton 47). Camera distance is one of these important factors in making the scene and giving a sense of what you are supposed to be experiencing during the film. Without using camera distance to its fullest the scene or shot may not come across to the viewer as what the director or writer intended. An example of camera distance being used to its potential is in the opening sequence at ricks café. The first shot that we see at ricks is of ricks sign on the ca...
A few of the camera angles used are long shot, medium shot, high angle and bird’s eye view. A long shot to show the link between characters/subjects and their environment and draws the audience’s attention to a particular aspect of the surroundings. It can also indicate the atmosphere of the film. A medium shot shows a characters facial expression and body language, and for us to get to know the characters and how they relate to each other more closely. A high angle shot makes the person or object look weaker, inferior, under pressure or vulnerable. Lastly, a bird’s eye view gives the audience an overview of where the character or subject is positioned and enables the audience to see what is going on away from the characters immediate
The use of cinematography helps to convey the superior relationship between characters. This occurs during the film frequently to demonstrate the superiority
...sed as the medium close-ups in this show, but are used when someone is entering a scene or used to see a scene from a different view. These types of shots are best suited for this type of television show as it is a drama, there are lots of conversations between two people where wide angled shots would not be needed. The camera angle most of the time in this shot are at eye level, I think they use this to help us feel like we are involved with the scenes, to get us to be more apart of it.
Shot 2: Close up. Dorothy views Oz and looks around, hugs Toto, walks out of shot. Angle straight on; no camera movement. Sound is still melodious, light nature sounds ambient.
As with the lighting, many of the angles of the film are the same. Hallström uses eye-level angles throughout most of the film. The simplicity of this technique adds to the minimalism characterized throughout the film, the town of Endora is a simple place and the Grapes are a simple family, using mostly eye-level angles supports the simplistic vibe of the story. Hallström uses a few oblique angles at times of distress and panic. One example of this is when Gilbert wakes up with Becky in the field and he realizes he needs to go home and fix the damage that he has done to his family. Another example of this technique is when Mama Grape dies and Arnie finds her. She is shot at an oblique angle, which emulates the distress that Arnie then feels for the loss of his mother. One other varying technique is when he shows Arnie up in the tree. He is shot from below, putting him in somewhat of a power position at the top of the shot shows the power he has over the family. Arnie is what is keeping them together and keeps them working hard for a better life.

In Edward Scissorhands, he uses eye level shots on most characters including Edward to show that nothing is wrong and all of them are normal. Although, he then contrasts that with using low angles on Edward’s hands to show how he is different and high angles when Peg went into the castle to find Edward to make her look vulnerable to Edward. In Charlie in the Chocolate Factory, the factory is very big and high angle shots are used as the characters walk in to show that they might not be so safe in the factory, but once they are inside, high angle is nearly not used at all to try and give this
...successful collaboration of sound, colour, camera positioning and lighting are instrumental in portraying these themes. The techniques used heighten the suspense, drama and mood of each scene and enhance the film in order to convey to the spectator the intended messages.
...high angle shots, two or three shots, and close ups establish the mood and relationship between the characters. Whether the sound was orchestral or pop music, it had a significant value to the plot, sequences, and shots of the story. In the case of movie shots, editing had a significant value to the film in order to help identify characters importance to the plot of a story.
Due to the film’s quality and interest it became an award winning film. The film had excellent sound effects such as the battle scenes. Offering the unique ability to visually and audibly convey a story, films remain a cornerstone in modern society. Combined with a viewer’s desire to escape the everyday parameters of life, and the excitement of enthralling themselves deep into another world, many people enjoy what films stand to offer. With the rising popularity of films across the world, the amount of film makers increases every day. Many technological innovations mark the advancement of film making, but the essential process remains the same. Pre-production accounts for everything taken place before any shooting occurs, followed by the actual production of the film, post-production will then consist of piecing the film together, and finally the film must reach an audience. Each step of this process contributes to the final product, and does so in a unique right. The process of film making will now start chronologically, stemming from the idea of the story, producing that story into a film, editing that footage together, and finally delivering that story to its viewers.
