CSI Class Reflection

There are several takeaways from my recent CSI class. One, which is topmost in my mind, is that respecting one another is crucial. Our class was made of different ethnic backgrounds, different religions and different ages. We had different ideas and opinions but were able to feel safe in expressing ourselves without judgment. This was largely in part to the instructor educating us on the importance of being open to others ideas at the onset of class. He also reminded us again on a few occasions. It proved to be very helpful and made for an enjoyable classroom discussion each session. Another takeaway for me was all the details that go into Crime Scene Investigation. Unlike on television, there is a lot of very tedious work that must be accomplished to link a suspect to a crime. What may appear to be small crime scene can end up being miles wide. Another challenge is taking photographs. The photographer must start with encompassing as much of the scene as possible and then move in toward particular pieces of evidence and show in pictures how the scene looks up close. More photographs are taken after the numbered or lettered markers are put out by each piece of evidence. Additional photographs are taken after the items have been bagged for transporting to labs. Each of these photographs is so important in a court of law. Each photo tells a part of the story.
Gathering evidence takes time and education. While a weapon may be an obvious piece of evidence, there are other pieces that are not so obvious. The pollen on a victim, the soil, plants, water, bugs and insects at the scene could all play a part in helping the investigator determine what took place. There may be a feather or a particular brand of coffee in a cup. Everything in the scene must be logged because each lead must be followed up
