Buzkashi
In his book “Buzkashi”, Whitney Azoy, a former officer at US embassy in Afghanistan, responds to how the traditional game of Buzkashi demonstrates the life of Afghans. The author tries to take an active part in the daily lives of Afghans to know more about the role of Buzkashi and its corresponding results to the lives of Afghans. Previously, when he was working as an officer, a friend suggested him to get familiar to Buzkashi as an approach to know the Afghans.
The game of Buzkashi in Afghanistan dates back to the time when the Turkic-Mongol people from North and east played it as part of their tradition. This game used to hold a special popularity in the north of the country because the north people were skilled horse riders. However, nowadays, different ethnic groups such as Uzbek, Hazara, Kirghiz, Kazakhs, Tajiks and Pashtuns play it.
The author points out three main dimensions to this game; Buzkashi as a commemoration, Buzkashi as a metaphor, Buzkashi as an arena for political process. Buzkashi as commemoration refers to how this game preserves the cultural heritage and the traditional burden of Afghan lifestyle along with its honor and masculinity. It’s more than just a simple entertaining game. The word Buzkashi is also used metaphorically to refer to a chaotic situation where everyone is following his self-interest and ignores others. The usage of the word is so prevalent in most northern and eastern provinces of Afghanistan because the game has a special popularity in these provinces.Based on the nature of the game which is all about power, agility and stamina, this game is used as a tool by some people who try to gain a fame among people and get respect. Although some participants may play Buzkashi for fun, for others, it means much more beyond the fun it carries. For people who try to gain political power through this game, Buzkashi is a game of political survival.
There are two different ways to play Buzkashi; one being called tudabarai, the simple and informal one, which is almost an individual game with no institutionalized total score at the end of game, and the other being called qarajai, a more complex form, which is formal with a team identification and an institutionalized total score at the end of the game.However, these two types of Buzkashi share the very same components such as horses, riders and carcass. What’s more, there are four orders to this game; the first order is the rivalry over gaining access to the calf carcass which then leads to a dispute of the second-order of the game where there is a competition to control over the dispute.

“Friend by Day, Enemy by Night” shares an in depth look into the lives of the Kohistanis who live in Thull, Pakistan. The author of the text, Lincoln Keiser, goes into great depth in explaining the life of these people before and after mar dushmani. Mar dushmani can be directly translated as “death enmity.” This social relationship between the Kohistanis causes for many problems. As a general principle death enmity allows men to retaliate whenever another man wrongs them, though the act of revenge itself should not exceed the original wrong. The example stated in the book is, “a blow should answer a blow and a death answer a death.” For such offenses as attacks on men through their wives, sisters, and daughters retaliation usually occurs in deadly violence. Killing the offender is considered the most appropriate response. Although violence usually takes place during retaliation, it is not the only way to handle it.
The conflict of good and evil presents itself in “The Most Dangerous Game” and “The Child by Tiger” in two completely different ways. One story being commercial fiction and the other being literary fiction, there are many ways of viewing variables such as good versus evil, realistic versus unrealistic stories and moral significance. The stories have different voices and are meant for different audiences, but in viewing the overall moral importance of both fictional works, the story with a greater moral significance is “The Child by Tiger”.

Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns features at the most basic level the compelling life story of a two women, Mariam and Laila, and their lives. However, the true heart of this work lies in a much broader issue through all of the characters and the events that took place in Afghanistan around the time of this novels story.Hosseini writes characters into his novel as characters in themselves on the surface, but can be seen as representations of a much larger population of Afghanistan. Hosseini uses individual characters as a window into the larger scene of the entire country of Afghanistan, and the many facets of its people, in order to illustrate the political issue in a new light so as to demonstrate to the audience Hosseini’s hope for the future of Afghanistan.
The fundamental characteristic of magical realism is its duality, which enables the reader to experience both the character’s past and the present. In the novel, Monkey Beach, Eden Robinson uses this literary device to address the the trauma and mistreatment of the Haisla community in Canada by unveiling the intimate memories of the protagonist, Lisamarie, and the resulting consequences of this oppression. Monkey Beach illustrates how abuse in the past leads to another form of self-medication in the future - a neverending, vicious cycle for the members of the Haisla community. Many characters in Monkey Beach are scarred from childhood sexual abuse and family neglect, and resort to drug and alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism. These appalling memories are an account of the impact of colonization on the Haisla territory which continues to haunt the Aboriginal community throughout generations.

Although Amir and Hassan grew up together playing in the same fields and climbing the same trees, there was an enormous degree of cultural history that separated them. Something much greater drew an invisible barrier between the two of them. The division of separation was more than the fact that each of them slept in two different homes or ate breakfast at different tables. Amir and Hassan were born only a year apart from each other. They each knew they had different mothers and different fathers. However, somehow, they were both fed as an infant from the breasts of a woman who was not their mother. In their culture, the nurturing and feeding that they received from the same woman connected them in way that was unchangeable. Hassan almost always knew the thoughts of Amir. Nonetheless, in spite of their friendship and unshakable feeding bond, the fact still remained that the two boys belonged to their own unique class within Afghanistan’s society.
On the outside you look, talk, and act like a man, but on the inside you are a young girl. There is a tradition in Afghanistan culture that was gone on for centuries called bacha posh where young girls grow up as men in a culture bound by women oppression. In Jenny Nordberg’s book The Underground Girls of Kabul she explores the Afghan culture and tradition on bacha posh. The bacha posh tradition is often seen as a practical to solution to women oppression that can lead to female empowerment and a higher family social status; although it can also leave negative psychological and mental affects that lead to issues later in life.
The practice of bacha posh can empower women and subvert society’s traditional rules. Women dressed up as a boy show society that they can do the same activities as men, which means that women have the capacity to the do the same work as a man. Practicing bacha posh can impact the system of Afghanistan, because women will have more power. They will be able to get an education and to be part of society. Women can then arrive at the point of being part of the government in Afghanistan by the practice of bacha posh. The empowerment of women can strengthen the system. The lost sport of Ulama has influenced many sports that we play in society today. Many people do not know what the sport is today but it is common techniques found in so many sports. Ulama is dated known to be dated as far back to 1500 BC but it has died away. Aztecs, Mayans, Mixtecs and Zapotecs all played and watched the ball game.
There have been many attempts to stop this practice, but to no avail. Practitioners need to realize that this practice is wrong, and that it has to be taken care of. Bacha Bazi translates to “boy play”. It is an ancient practice brought back by “powerful warlords, former military commanders, and wealthy businessmen” (“Introduction”) after it was banned during the Taliban era. Even after the country’s infrastructure was badly destroyed during the civil war, people didn’t lose hope and they again started building their homes. Even after such tragedy people again started assembling at chai kahnas (Tea house) which is also called Samawar, and in urban places like restaurant they participates in sports, festivals and play games. The tape emits loud and raucous music. People of are Afghanistan mostly follow the religion Islam. Afghans have a tradition of cultural and also modern afghan music. Traditional afghan music is unique charm which acts as part of the celebrations. People treat themselves during the holy Nawroz celebration. This is the Persian New-year and is celebrated in the regions where there is Persian influence or migrants from Iran. Afghans show fierce loyalty to their respective tribes. They also believe that Islamic law allows every 'believer' to keep arms when ordered by the ruler. This requirement becomes more important because of the geographical location and the difficult living conditions to survive in the mountains. They show very simple but at the same time very nourishing cuisine which comprises of hand baked bread and vegetable or meat preparations.
