History of Business Anthropology as a Discipline Business anthropology is a practice or inquiry within the business field that is based on substantive knowledge or methodology, anthropological epistemology, or a blend of these (Jordan, 89). In the beginning of the twentieth century, as a discipline, business anthropology was reinvigorated and fully supported by the business interests in America to build up as an experientially founded social science that could offer a scientific source for social welfare (Kuklick, 134). To some extent, because of this inspiration, the problem-solving and research interests of the American anthropologists in the business field concentrated predominantly on manufacturing efficiency, and they were formed by the customs and conducts of other disciplines, for instance industrial psychology, by means of the Human Relations school. The terms “conscious” and “capitalism” are seldom used together; however, John Mackey, the Co-CEO of Whole Foods Market, has started a movement known as Conscious Capitalism that has the power to change the way businesses operate. For years, many vilify businesses due to their reputation of merciless methods of earning profits. In fact, the Merriam Webster dictionary defines capitalism as, “an economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit”. Mackey introduces a new concept and meaning for businesses in his book Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business stating that there is a higher purpose for companies than generating profit. Higher purpose, conscious leadership, conscious culture, and stakeholder orientation are the four key tenants of practice to becoming a conscious capitalist company. After attending the trips on the Dallas Study Tour, I was able to witness how various companies operated and how their cultures were aligned with conscious capitalism.

The most influential cultural practice of our time is the culture of capitalism, as it is the dominant form of economic organization across the globe (Anderson 2010). Capitalism takes and makes places throughout the globe, leaving traces that affect the commodities we buy, the livings earned, the methods and motives for travelling, and the meanings associated with them (Anderson 2010). The culture of capitalism is based upon trading products, experiences, and services, at all different scales - locally, nationally, or globally. Those who successfully trade products and services, and those who are limited to selling their labour to help other manufacture and provide the desired product often define capitalism. The process of making more money is a key defining element of the culture of capitalism (Anderson 2010).
The article talked about how anthropologists play an important role in the corporate environment. Anthropologists have been working with businesses since the 1930?s, however in the 1980?s this field experienced significant growth. This was due to the ?globalization of business activity and the increased awareness of the importance of culture for business,? (Laabs 24). Cultural anthropology is the study of existing people and corporations find this information useful in trying to understand human behavior within their own organization. ?Business anthropologists have been studying the corporate world for years, on such varied topics as how to encourage more creativity or how best to integrate multicultural learning techniques into an organization?s training program,? (Laabs 25). Most anthropologists who work in the corporate environment do not use the title of anthropologist. There are currently over 200 anthropologists working in this field. The article then gave an account of one anthropologist?s experience in the corporate environment. The article concludes by saying what corporations think of the value that anthropologists add to the companies and that the role will continue to grow.
The involvement of immense corporations and how they make and distribute their products will also be explored. Certain companies will be discussed as to whether they are reliable and dependable sources of products or if they cut corners by getting their materials internationally. One will be able to grasp how a nation’s financial standing impacts other aspects of that country’s well-being. Child labor in America will be another subject matter touched on and if the degree that it occurs at in a more developed nation is much different from other undeveloped nations.

Although, policy and practices are just part of what is business ethic, addressing controversial issues remains a key principle of business ethics. It is increasingly clear that media and culture today are of central importance to the maintenance and reproduction of contemporary societies. Cultures expose society to different personalities, provide models, which display various forms of societal life and cultivate various ways to introduce people into dominant forms of thought and action. These are the types of activities integrate people into society and create our public sphere. Media and technology surround our society; engrained into the fabric of our existence so much so, that it has become hard to find an aspect of life not influenced by its effects. For this reason, media controllers, wield extreme power and influence over the lives of everyday people. Although, they increasingly continue to feed the audience trash, despite their authority as the creator of our social/cultural interactions, and justify their actions by calling themselves industries. Reducing themselves to just businesses whose sole purpose is to create a profit. This admittance of what they feel to be their true purpose however does not hinder their control and power but instead adds to it. Creating a need for there to be some way to analyze and discuss whether they are using their position and power wisely. What is applied anthropology and how can it be applied to almost every facet of society? The answer is obvious when we look at what the field of anthropology encompasses. Anthropology, as defined by the American Anthropological Association is, “the study of humans, past and present.” In the United States, anthropologists are educated in one of the four areas, sociocultural anthropology, biological/physical anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. Active within these four subfields is Applied Anthropology, which is the application of the method and theory of an anthropological subfield to the analysis and solution of real world situations and practical problems. Anthropology’s field is the wide is the wide array of human social experience.
The problem that was investigated consisted of a question that Milton Friedman posed in one of his articles, which was featured in The New York Times Magazine in 1970. The question was, “What does it mean to say that “business” has responsibilities” (Friedman, 2007, p. 173)? Friedman (1970) elaborated on how businesses cannot have assigned responsibilities. Furthermore, he described how groups or individuals should be the only ones that can hold responsibilities, not businesses. He stated that associating responsibilities with the word business is too ambiguous. I will examine three discussion questions and three compare and contrast questions which Jennings (2009) posed in a case study that is related to Friedman’s (1970) article “The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits”.
Corporate culture is the shared values and meanings that members hold in common and that are practiced by an organization’s leaders. Corporate culture is a powerful force that affects individuals in very real ways. In this paper I will explain the concept of corporate culture, apply the concept towards my employer, and analyze the validity of this concept. Research As Sackmann's Iceberg model demonstrates, culture is a series of visible and invisible characteristics that influence the behavior of members of organizations. Organizational and corporate cultures are formal and informal. They can be studied by observation, by listening and interacting with people in the culture, by reading what the company says about its own culture, by understanding career path progressions, and by observing stories about the company.
