Bus Stop
Critique
First thing first, I want to start of by saying that I really did enjoy the play. I went in thinking it might not be good but I was I wrong. Bus Stop, is written by William Inge and directed by Adam Noble, takes in small town few miles outside of Kansas City inside a dinner type restaurant. Because of bad weather and snow on the roads a bus is forced to stop there for almost a whole night. After watching the play I thought that the theme of the play was transformation and friendship. I felt that even though Bo was loud, aggressive and a proud man, to get what he loved he had to mature up and go out of his way to show how much he loved Cherie. Also, another theme that I felt was the theme of the play

In addition to the set, the play’s costumes helped me understand the character a lot more. For Cherie, costumes showed that she was a dancer and singer of a nightclub but also an attractive woman who likes to dress up and be well taken care of. Virgil dressed as if to show he was a wise and respectable person. Bo dressed a cowboy who had just came from a bull riding contest and won it, showing he was tough. In addition to the set and the costumes, the play’s lighting also helped understand the story better by helping me keep a track of where the main conversations were going while also keeping a dim light one the other characters who still performing their roles one side like Virgil playing his card, Bo staring out the window and think, Cherie drinking her coffee, and Elma cleaning. While the set, the costumes, and the lighting, the sound did not much help me nor did it hinder me with the play. For sounds I mostly just heard them every time a door to the dinner opened up, which were of either of wind or truck. Although some background music did help feel a certain way for the
...ition to costume, language and dialogue is what fixes the atmosphere and the action. In a manner very similar to Shakespeare, Calderón weaves description of the scene and of what is occurring into the main thrust of the play. In this sense, he is more than a poet, he is a dramatic craftsman who predominantly through his verse alone, creates a drama in its own right. All the clues to the plot and its themes lie in the text; the use of staging, costume, music and props can be used to enhance what lies in the script. What they give to the play is a fuller and more entertaining dramatic production. Thus, if used sensitively and intelligently by a director, these factors can increase the dramatic power of the work. The primary focus, however, remains the language, which relies on a high standard of acting in order to do justice to the subtleties of the play.
This play was set in the 1890s, meaning it is very important to have correlating costumes so the audience can be aware of what time period there in. Of course Dolly who had a few costume changes looked stunning in everything she wore. My one small critique was with her last outfit that she wore during the finale. The jewels on the red dress were awkwardly placed it was almost like a diamond belt but, it fell on her in the wrong area making it not as flattering to her body as it could have been. However, her feather headset and the glistening diamond reflections in the spotlight made up for it. Also Claire Dicorte, an ensemble member, had a perfectly fitting outfit that fit her in all the right places she looked like an everyday woman in that time. Of course Emily Mouton looked hilarious in her big obnoxious orange dress too, if anyone can pull that off it was her character Ernestina. Finally, all the waiters and waitresses correlating colors looked fantastic, especially when they were dancing, no distractions because they were all the same color! My OCD was not bugging me on that because believe me if they had a shade off I would have noticed. I could tell the hard work that was put into those costumes so I congratulate Michelle Tinker for all of her hard
The Hippodrome setting played a big role in the success of the play, because the seats were close to the stage, which made the audience feel more intimate with the actors. The set was filled with everyday electronics and video games that were popular with today’s generation, and it was good way to capture the attention of the younger audience. The costumes worked for the actors because they were outfits that teens and young adults would wear, which made it easier to relate to the characters. The lighting for the production was awesome because it went well with the sound effects. For example, when Ian was doing a simulation for his new job, he set off a missile and when it exploded the lights changed from blue to red to symbolize seriousness of the situation.
However, the clever and deliberate use of props, costumes, and the stage helps it establish its themes and context and set it apart from other plays. In the beginning, the props are set to evoke the setting of a slave ship. The chains surrounding the pedestal in the middle of the stage invoke the idea of being imprisoned, the images on the side depict slaves being shackled, and the basic idea how the living conditions were on the boat. In addition, the screens often depict vivid imagery of the time period, or historical figures of the time. The images along with the sound effects add to the atmosphere, as it makes a stronger statement than words alone. The costume choice is well-done, and they serve well to differentiate the actors from each other or the different characters. The man in shackles that was hidden underneath the cloth in the moving dolly gives off the appearance of the stereotypical slave. Considering Malik Proctor also portrayed the kid, the waiter, and Flo’rance, the audience does not focus on the actor but the character he is playing. The characters portrayed are differentiable as the costumes set them apart, aided by the tone and inflection in the way the characters speak and act. Having the characters being able to be told apart gives the play immersion, as it allows the audience to focus on what is happening, not why the actors are playing
A message that really explains the movie in a sentence is every human is not perfect and each human has their own personal struggles that they will try to overcome. Boobie Miles thought he was perfect and he actually put a curse on himself and got injured right at the beginning. The primary theme in the film is the Underdogs don’t always win. We thought because they were underdogs they were going to win but they ended up losing. They still did put up a great fight. Some other themes are the impact of adults’ hopes and goals lived vicariously through their children. The most important theme of the novel involves the impact of adults’ hopes and goals lived vicariously through their children. The people of Odessa place an unmistaken spell on the shoulders of their sons to be champions every year so that the adults can take the triumph as their own. The result is that their children can never leave their triumphs and defeats of that short time behind. It follows them no matter what they make of their lives, and it is unfair that they must do so. The last important theme is that of misplaced priorities. The people of Odessa wouldn’t accept the fact that their obsession with football was impacting on the educational success of their children. Their need to have a winning season affected class time, homework, tests, and even whether school
A significant aspect of the play is the acting and wardrobe, because it helps demonstrate the personalities of the characters.
Overall, the score was beautiful and appropriate, adding suspense and mystery at all the right times. The sound effects added psychological flavor to the story without drawing too much attention to it.
The universal themes that are used in the story are racism and better the young.”And mothers and fathers, if it is too late for you, think of your children. Make it safe so they don't have to run away, for I want for you and your children what I had.”( Baker, 83) These themes are universal because both talk about things that has happened multiple times. Like better the young. We want the young to be the greatest generation and not make the mistakes we had made. The children of each generation need to be better than the last generations. The other theme racism. Racism was back then and it is now. The theme talks about the racism in the past and in the present and in the future. Racism will be the theme for lots of things in the present but also
The music and sound effects are in the same pont with what the author nedded to say in that play. In the smok and sword fight on the first act we thought will be a play where every body is confusing and fight each other. The phone ringing all the time and this help the actors to play around in the hury and action come up with rehearsal process. The purposes of the phone is any time we heart that something is going to happen, so we expectin to change the sequence in the play. Ringing the phone open a problem, hanging up the phone close the problem. Opening and shoutting the door of dressing room as a slamming it create for the audience understanding the flow of the show and leaves the flexibility as we see white and black to the performance. Crying with tears make the player dramatic, but afraid of discover which it trying to keep things together laughting and
For instance, a musical number about a character’s tragic past might include soft, golden lighting, while a scene about dancing in a dance class might include purple lights to show the overall mood of the scene. In addition, the costumes used in the musical added even more life to the musical by providing a visual representation of each character and his or her personality. The costumes allowed the audience to determine the character traits of each character while also deciding the type of homes the characters came from. For instance, one of the characters was dressed in pants and a shirt that would normally be seen worn by an older man or a father. This leads the audience to believe that the character might be an older person who has a family of his own.
The music suited the movie very nicely. By the type of music playing, you could determine what sort of scene was coming up, either fast and light...
The theme of the play has to do with the way that life is an endless cycle. You're born, you have some happy times, you have some bad times, and then you die. As the years pass by, everything seems to change. But all in all there is little change. The sun always rises in the early morning, and sets in the evening. The seasons always rotate like they always have. The birds are always chirping. And there is always somebody that has life a little bit worse than your own.
I thought the use of the lines in the outfit for the chorus was a very interesting choice along with making them yellow and white. Though this is understandable since those are common colors used in fireman outfits, which the chorus was supposed to represent. Though I thought that the costume lost a little bit of balance with the crudely drawn on mustaches and I felt like it took away the seriousness of who the chorus is supposed to be. Another thing that I found interesting in the play was the way that Mr. Biedermann and Mrs. Biedermann (Played by Sidney Lowell) where both in different types of blue. While Mr. Biedermann was in a dark blue which can signify someone being aloof, which would explain Mr. Biedermann since he did not know or care that the men that he let stay in his home were indeed firebugs. While on the other hand, Mrs. Biedermann’s dress was a pale gentle blue that gave her a sense of youthfulness and peace. This would make sense because she has to be careful because of her bad heart, that she would be more of a gentle and caring type of person. By giving the Biedermann’s a similar cold color scheme brought uniformity to the two characters in their warm colored
The main character in this story is unique and something that is not expected, a stage manager. Throughout the book, the stage manager talked like he was in front of an audience and explained backstories. One of the biggest themes that I picked up on in Our Town was the stages of life and how you should appreciate everyday that you have. The theme was developed through the characters of George and Emily.
