There is an unknown epidemic that kills thousands of people every year. This quiet killer is not cancer, car accidents or disease, but is inflicted by the victim’s own hand, suicide. An unknown source confidently stated, “Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem” (10 Powerful Suicide Prevention Quotes & Sayings 15). While there are many causes of suicide, the leading cause is untreated depression. A highly publicized suicide occurred in August of 2014, when famous comedian and actor Robin Williams took his own life. In fact, “there are over 800,000 suicides worldwide every year” recently stated by SAVE (Suicide Facts 30). In the United States, one person commits suicide about every 16 minutes. for three times as many as young men in attempting to end their life, while men are more successful in their suicide attempt and outnumber women in actual death by four to one. The damage caused by suicide is not limited to the person who actually commits the act, but intimately affects at least six other people, and may also cause additional suicides among closely related individuals. Those who survive their suicide attempt often suffer from major depression, feelings of hopelessness and anxiety. Suicide is caused by a number of factors ranging from traumatic events to untreated mental illness. Bullying is one of many causes of suicide.
Bullying can cause an immediate change in a person’s behavior, which could lead to suicide. Bullying victims are more likely to commit suicide than a regular teenager. Bullying includes name-calling, continuous tormenting, spreading of rumors, threatening, and physical abuse. Bullying leads to a mentality of hopelessness, which usually leads to a person feel that they are not needed or will not be missed, a research project from the National Education Association had concluded, “It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students” (. A person that has the mentality of hopelessness or feels that they will not be missed results in …show more content…
suicide. Another cause of suicide is substance abuse. The effects that alcohol, drugs, and other substances can have on your brain can cause you to have lower brain function and the inability to reason properly. “It is often mistakenly assumed that drug abusers lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop using drugs simply by choosing to change their behavior.” (Drug Facts 1). Substance abuse can lead to insecurities, change in personality, loss of friends and family, among many other negative life situations. The impulsive actions when abusing mind altering substances can lead to suicide since the abuser doesn’t have the ability to reason through the consequences of their actions. Substance abuse is most commonly used as an escape from reality and painful feelings. Because of the desire to escape reality and the altered ability to reason, choosing to end one’s life seems logical to the abuser as a permanent form of pain relief. While bullying and substance abuse are well-noted causes of suicide, untreated depression is the leading cause of suicide.
Depression can affect peoples lives substantially, especially a disconnection with family and friends. “Unfortunately some people get so depressed as a result of their mental illness or life circumstances that they consider suicide as an option to escape from their emotional pain.” (10 Powerful Suicide Prevention Quotes & Sayings 1). Often those suffering with depression see no ability to feel better and do not seek treatment, thus creating a dangerous level of untreated depression. Kathy Romito, a medical reviewer for WebMD says, “After you have had an episode of depression, you are more likely to have it again” (Romito). In some cases, untreated depression may lead to self-harm or in extreme cases
suicide. Suicide has many causes; many people haven’t even heard of, or even care about. Bullying is the third leading cause of suicide in the United States. There are many different forms of bullying and it’s effects
Suicide is the eleventh most common cause of death in the United States. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a person takes their own life once every fourteen minutes in the United States (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention [AFSP], 2011). Still, with suicide rates so high, suicide is a taboo topic in our society. Though suicide is intended to end one person’s pain, it causes an immeasurable amount of pain and suffering to loved ones close to the deceased.
A mother finds her 17 year old teenage son hanging from the rafters of their basement. To hear of this occurrence is not rare in society today. Every 90 minutes a teenager in this country commits suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-24 year olds. The National suicide rate has increased 78% between 1952 and 1992. The rate for 15-19 year olds rose from two per 100,000 to 12.9, more than 600 percent. (Special report, Killing the Pain, Rae Coulli)

Bullying is pervasive amongst all age groups; statistics show there is an estimated 1 in 7 students grades K-12 who are being bullied. Social media is increasingly becoming the new medium for bullying where anonymity allow bullies to be as toxic as pleases them. So what good solutions has our schools came up for this? A few words can either make or break a person, even if they say they are okay. “In 70% of all teen suicides, another teen knew about it and did nothing” (Portner). Emotinal...
There are several ongoing of issues that are effecting adolescents in today’s society ranging from low self-esteem, teen pregnancy, and obesity. Also, amongst these issues are the growing concerns and effects of bullying. Its epidemic is also starting to become closely related to the growing numbers of suicide rates amongst adolescents within the United States and across the globe. However, there are several adults that may take bullying lightly thinking that it is just a part of kids being kids. Whereas to an adolescent, bullying can cause long-term effects as they transition into adulthood. However, in order for one to examine the long-term effects of bullying one must be able to define what bullying is and determine the cause and effect.
Bullying in all forms hurts mental health. Adolescents who have experienced bullying in any way are often diagnosed with depression and have low self-esteem. They begin behaving in disobedient ways, doing worse in school, and using drugs and alcohol. Lastly, these kids were found to be more likely to attempt or complete suicide

Bullying is a major problem in our society today, especially among teens. Bullying can be found in many forms, such as, direct bullying, which is considered kicking, hitting, making cruel comments, or threats. On the other hand, indirect bullying is spreading rumors, or excluding someone from a group; most of the time indirect bullying is done by females. Another form of bullying is cyber-bullying, which is done on the internet, social networking sites, email, or texting. This has become a very popular form of bullying over the past few years. Also, hazing is considered bullying. The term hazing can vary from singing an embarrassing song to extreme physical torture (Rees 24). Hazing is mostly done in sports and in social groups. The term “bullying” is considered a verbal or physical action that causes physical or psychological harm, is repeated over time, and occurs in a relationship of unequal power (Waters 7). Some people think that bullying does not lead to suicide, and that bullying is just a natural part of life. However, bullying, in many cases, is leading to suicide.
Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences for the bully.
Suicide is a very real problem in our society today. According to the CDC, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in Americans. (CDC) There is an increasing number of people committing suicide and people attempting suicide each year. Unfortunately, there is a stigma around suicide that makes people afraid to ask for the help that they need. This review of literature discusses suicide by addressing the following questions to three main ideas:
“Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain” (I-10). Ending a life is a big step in the wrong direction for most. Suicide is the killing of oneself. Suicide happens every day, and everyday a family’s life is changed. Something needs to be done to raise awareness of that startling fact. Suicide is a much bigger problem than society will admit; the causes, methods, and prevention need to be discussed more openly.
Approximately twelve, 8-10 year old children commit suicide every year because they are victims of bullying. Whereas 1.3 million children a year bully others. What is bullying? As defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a "bully" is one who hurts or intimidates others. This assault may occur in two principle forms, verbal or physical. There are specific reasons why bullying happens and specific solutions that could help save as many as 12 lives a year.
Suicide has become a critical, national problem and the extent of this is mind-boggling. Suicides have been proven to be one of the leading causes of death among college students. According to Webters dictionary “suicide is the act killing oneself on purpose”. It derived from the Latin sui, meaning “self”, and caedere, which means “to kill”. But this is just a definition, because an actual suicide holds different meanings to people such as tragic, shocking, a relief, a cry for help, a shame, heroic, the right choice, punishment, revenge, protest, anger, a mistake, desperate, hurtful and many more. But why do people, like college students who have their entire future ahead of them, simply give up hope and turn their heads away from life and commit suicide. There are several causes of suicide, recent incidents of suicide on college campuses, warning signs from a suicidal. I blame the Constitution and the United States law for not taking any hard initiative on the subject of suicide. I also impose the choice of the media, which is reflecting and portraying suicide towards a wrong direction. However most important questions remain: can the growing epidemic of suicide be solved, what are communities doing about it and what can they do to help?
“An estimate 4,400 young people kill themselves each year.”(Bullying). Suicide is caused mostly by bullying. Feeling neglected or unwanted is a major key on why people want
An estimated amount of 160,000 students across the United States misses school each day due to being a victim of bullying. From a present study, 29% of students involved in bullying, 14% of the children were said to be victims, 7% were bullies, and 8% were bullies and victims. The worst type of social behavior stems from bullying, and leads to complications in a student’s future. Bullying is a way of expressing aggressive behavior that is intended, and continues that sometimes leads to physical or mental injuries. Those who are victims of bullying, lack self-esteem, and become easily depressed by small objects. There are four common types of bullying: verbal, physical, relational aggression, and
