“An estimate 4,400 young people kill themselves each year.”(Bullying). Suicide is caused mostly by bullying. Feeling neglected or unwanted is a major key on why people want To end their life. Experts say the older kids bully the younger kids, leaving them helpless, Unguarded and scared. The point of my editorial was to talk about how all of us need to be involved and help understand where the bullying is coming from, also help the situation out caused by bullying. Suicide due to bullying has been given the name of bullycide. One example of bullycide would be Jon Carmichael from Texas who was bullied so harshly that “one day they stripped him naked, tied him up, and stuck him in a trash can, and they taped it with their cell phones and put it all on You Tube” per his mother’s account (Texas Monthly, Hollandsworth). A few days later Jon was found hanging by a rafter from their barn after committing suicide. The perpetrators of this abuse were his fellow classmates and it is reported that “60% of boys who bullied others in middle school had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24; 40% had three or more convictions” (van der Valk, 41). This is a lesson that needs to be taught throughout both middle schools and high schools. All around the world, suicide rates are going up, and most of these cases relate back to bullying. The children often do not say anything because they are afraid the bullying will only get worse. When nothing changes, they are driven to suicide to relieve the pain that they are feeling. As Marge Piercy examines in “Barbie Doll,” students are picked on for being or looking different than others. No matter what type of bullying it may be, it hurts people more than they are willing to let on. All forms of bullying, whether it be in schools, physical, verbal, or online, have an impact on teen suicide ideation.

Bullying is a prevalent issue in school communities across the world which has caused great damages to the bullied. In fact, suicides is one of the leading cause of deaths in students 10 to 14 years old and the cause of suicide was overwhelmingly from bullying. Bullying is pervasive amongst all age groups; statistics show there is an estimated 1 in 7 students grades K-12 who are being bullied. Social media is increasingly becoming the new medium for bullying where anonymity allow bullies to be as toxic as pleases them. So what good solutions has our schools came up for this? Nothing, most students agree.
Bullying occurs between girls and guys but studies show that girls are more emotional attacked, which in the long run can cause more issues later on in life. Although bullying changes the futures of many girls it also takes a very high toll on guys lives as well. “Patel also found that of the total of suicides at ages 15 and older, about 40% and about 56% of female suicides occurred at ages 15-29 years old”(NCBI). When these studies were shown it ends being a surprising case; more girls attempt suicide but more guys are successful. Furthermore bullying is the ultimate reason for teen suicide “For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it”(Bullying Statistics). Bullying causes many suicide attempts at a young age but once the child figures out how to face the bully they will be a stronger person. If they cannot figure out how to take a stand for themselves many of the children turn to suicide. Therefore, taking a stance on bullying and figuring out why bullying is so common, will eliminate a majority of teen suicide. Since Teen Suicide is the second leading cause of teenage death in the United States, there is a need for legislation that promotes awareness and education about Cyber-Bullying.
Bullying is a major problem in our society today, especially among teens. Bullying can be found in many forms, such as, direct bullying, which is considered kicking, hitting, making cruel comments, or threats. On the other hand, indirect bullying is spreading rumors, or excluding someone from a group; most of the time indirect bullying is done by females. Another form of bullying is cyber-bullying, which is done on the internet, social networking sites, email, or texting. This has become a very popular form of bullying over the past few years. Also, hazing is considered bullying. The term hazing can vary from singing an embarrassing song to extreme physical torture (Rees 24). Hazing is mostly done in sports and in social groups. The term “bullying” is considered a verbal or physical action that causes physical or psychological harm, is repeated over time, and occurs in a relationship of unequal power (Waters 7). Some people think that bullying does not lead to suicide, and that bullying is just a natural part of life. However, bullying, in many cases, is leading to suicide.
In the past few years, bullying has gotten so bad that people decided to take their own lives to escape the pain. Bullies use violent behaviors to harm their victims verbally and physically. Usually, the victim is too frightened to fight back and too embarrassed to inform adults. People choose to bully others for a broad range of reasons (media or the want for power), but not getting love and attention from dysfunctional families is the main reason ("Why do people bully?" n.d.). In the end, however, everyone experiences consequences. The bullies become lonely and violent while the victims suffer from depression. Family and societal issues have led many people to become aggressive and think that it is permissible to deliberately humiliate others; they will then gain an overwhelming power and a sense of autonomy from watching their victims' pain, which causes them to not realize the negative outcomes that they might encounter like loneliness, depression, and possibly even death.
In September of 2011, a 14-year-old boy from Williamsville, New York named Jamey Rodemeyer took his own life. Rodemeyer’s suicide may have been the result of years of bullying and harassment, having faced hateful comments and gay slurs in school and online (Praetorius 2011). Rodemeyer was not alone. September of 2010 was particularly deadly for young gay students with a number of suicides: Billy Lucas (15), Seth Walsh (13), Tyler Clementi (18), Harrison Chase Brown (15), Asher Brown (13), and Caleb Nolt (14) (Eliason 2011). According to the American Psychological Association (2013), rates of suicide among people ages 15 to 24 have been increasing at an alarming rate. Risk factors for suicide include depression and other mental disorders. Specifically, young people who are unable to cope with the challenges of adolescence develop a severe vulnerability to mental disorders caused by stressors like disciplinary problems, interpersonal losses, family violence, sexual orientation confusion, physical and sexual abuse, and being the victim of bullying (American Psychological Association 2013). While it is understood that suicide is not unique to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, research suggests that elevated rates of suicidal behaviors exist in LGBT youth (Bagley & Tremblay
According to the Center for Control of Disease and Prevention, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States of America. Researchers at the CDC National Center for Health Statistics claim suicide rates have increased since 1999 in everyone from pre-teens to the elderly. Suicide is the second most leading cause of death between the ages of ten to thirty four. Every year thereafter, suicide rates began to steadily increase. A big increase with suicide has show to come from teenage bullying. Eight percent of high school students have attempted suicide and over fifteen percent have considered it. Furthermore, the CDC reports that for every suicide a teen commits, there at least 100 other attempts. These types of bullying may seem like childs-play, but could cause a major emotional stress on a teen, increasing the risk of suicidal behavior. These types of bullying can occur from cyber-bullying, physical bullying, emotional bullying, spreading rumors, or texting.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year olds, and the sixth leading cause for 5 to 14 year olds. Suicide accounts for twelve percent of the mortality in the adolescent and young adult group. Young males are more common than young woman suicides. These are only children who followed through with the suicide. For every successful suicide there are fifty to one hundred adolescent suicide attempts. In other words, more than five percent of all teenagers tried to commit suicide, and the number is still rising. It is scary to think that four percent of high school students have made a suicide attempt within the previous twelve months. In a small safe town like Avon, in the Avon High School where you and I practically live, you can see the faces of 22 students that have tried to commit suicide. That is enough to fill a classroom.
Many people have suffered from depression, bullying, cyberbullying, stress, and suicidal thoughts. Many people are still suffering from this. Depression, bullying, cyberbullying, stress, and suicidal thoughts are the reasons why people commit suicide. If someone you know is having suicidal thought get them help immediately. If you are the one having suicidal thought get help or tell a trusted adult or friend.
Throughout the years, bullying has become a significant reason for teenagers to become depressed or even suicidal. It does not matter what the teen is being discriminated against, whether it be their race, what they believe in, or who they love.
