“BUILD A WALL”…”SEND ALL THE IMMIGRANTS BACK”…”OUR NATION IS TOTALLY DIVIDED”…these quotes are currently being spoken buy a man who claims to be a leader. These are not the characteristics of a leader and hardly a man that could live up to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or Woodford R. Porter Sr.’s standards or intentions for a nation as great and diverse as ours. A truly educated man possessing both intelligence and character would not spew fictional and demeaning rhetoric as Donald Trump is now.

Society pushes the idea that going to college is the only way to obtain a true education. Like many from his generation, my grandfather did not graduate from high school. He dropped out during tenth grade and joined the Navy, becoming an underwater welder and later choosing a career in farming. Although he did not attend college, much less graduate high school, he has one of the richest educations of anyone I've ever met. He has an extremely unique character and could teach anyone about welding, farm equipment, running a business or animal husbandry. He has taught me compassion for the 4-H animals I have raised from my 1500 pound steer to a 5 pound market rabbit. The life lessons I have been able to experience with him I will never be able to learn from a book. He is truly an inspiration and his success and happiness are attributes that I strive for. Luke and Tristen, my cousins, are my age and attending high school, half of their day they attend vocational school for diesel mechanics. I'm sure college is not in their future but they will have a very useful and skillful education. My education will come from college, but that does not make my education superior to any of theirs or anyone that chooses not to go to college. Martin Luther King Jr.’s entire speech that this quote was excerpt from includes, “If we are not careful, our colleges will produce a group of close-minded, unscientific, illogical propagandists, consumed with immortal acts. Be careful, brethren! Be careful, teachers.” He is fearful that colleges and universities could ruin the future students and make them arrogant. Isn’t that true though? It should still be a fear of ours today. Colleges produce the next workers, the next parents, the next presidential candidates. If the students become close-minded how will new things be discovered? If students act as though others are inferior, how will we be able to work
