I. “Crime is contagious, it can start with a broken window and spread to an entire community.” Crime is most definitely contagious, just like someone’s personal attitude. If a person has a negative attitude, other people around can reflect off of it and it can bring down their attitude. This relates closely to crime. If someone commits a crime and doesn’t get caught, others think they can do it also with the same outcome. It could be as little as jumping over turnstiles without paying, or something much bigger such as graffiti. In Malcolm Gladwell’s essay, kids were jumping over the turnstiles in the subway. The two men argued and came to a conclusion that crime is inevitable which resulted in the broken window theory. The broken window theory is an epidemic theory of crime, it is crucial to solving crimes because it gives an idea of how and why crimes happen. In the 1980s the New York Transit Authority hired Kelling as a consultant, and he urged them to put the broken window theory into play. They listened to Kelling and brought in a new subway director, David Gunn. He was in charge of the rebuilding of the subway system. Many subway advocates told Gunn to worry about more serious issues and to leave the graffiti alone. Gunn did not agree; he was a follower of the broken window theory. In his mind, the graffiti was the cause of the crash of the subway system. The first thing he wanted to do was clean up the trains. One by one the graffiti was removed off of the trains. If a train had graffiti on it, it was called a “dirty car.” The dirty cars had to be cleansed of graffiti before going back on the railroad, or it was removed from service. Gunn’s graffiti cleanup took from 1984 to 1990. At this time, the Transit Authority hired William Bratton to head the transit police. Bratton was also a follower of the broken window theory. He decided to start taking fare-beating more serious. Just like Gunn’s idea of the graffiti, Bratton thought the fare-beating was the start to bigger crimes. Topic II. Furthermore, the criminal justice system brought up new ideals with the Broken Windows theory.
The broken windows theory, was proposed by James Q. Wilson and George Kelling (1982). This used broken windows to describe disorder within neighbourhoods.Their theory links disorder and unsociable behavior within a community leading to serious crime. Prior to theories such as broken windows, law enforcement and police tended to focus on the serious crime. However, Wilson and Kelling took a different view from this. They saw serious crime as the final result of a chain of events, which emerged from disorder. If we eliminated disorder, then serious crimes would not occur as mentioned by Mckee
The Usefulness of Sociological Theories in Explaining Crime and the Control of Crime This paper seeks to explore the usefulness of Sociological Theories in explaining crime and whether in doing so there arises implications for probation practice. I shall begin by providing a brief explanation for the historical development of criminological thinking, starting with Classicism and moving onto Positivism both which lay the foundations for the development of sociological theories in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Analysis of the literature has highlighted the vast array of theories to which my attention will be paid. However, due to the limitations of this piece of work and in order to provide an in-depth account of the usefulness of particular theories I have chosen to focus on two; Labelling Theory and Subcultural Theory. I will provide a thorough account of how they attempt to explain crime and how offenders are propelled into crime and the usefulness of such theories.
The basic rights of citizens in cities are challenged in order for officials to protect and maintain safety of the city. Government officials are continually searching for ways to increase the safety of its citizens. Research has shown that one such way to accomplish this task is through the maintaining of public areas. Since the early 1980s, this idea has been known as the Broken Windows Theory. Applying this theory in the urban setting can increase the quality of living for the area citizens, help prevent future crimes, and promote a positive relationship between the police force and the citizens.
Crime causation is looking at why people commit crimes. There are many theories that have been developed to explain this. The theories can be grouped into eight general categories of which one is the Classical theory (Schmallegar, 2011, p. 79). A subset of this theory, rational choice theory, will be specifically looked at to explain the crime of burglary. Just as no one causation theory explains all crimes committed, the rational choice theory itself does not completely explain why all burglars commit their crimes. Therefore, the pros and cons of the rational choice theory will be discussed in relation to the crime topic of burglary.
The others commonly give focus on the individuals while the social learning theory looks at a criminal activity in an aspect that involves the entire community. The social learning theory suggests that it is the societies that will a condition under which an individual will be tempted to engage in a criminal activity. This simply implies that people who live in a given geographical area will be influenced by other people to commit crimes. This is from the immediate activities of people who live close to one another. A person will learn the act of crime from what is observed from the other person and this may be a neighbor, relative, family member or any other person that they share something in common with. In some cases, this may come from the peer pressure where individuals will be forced to learn on different ways of committing crime from each other. For instance, a youth may simply feel left behind by the age-mates within their community who are well conversant with criminal activities and decide to as well learn on how crime is done. The other aspect that may drive someone towards learning criminal activities is the issue of social gaps that exist within our society. Social conflict is brought about the big wealth gaps and class warfare (Helfgott, 2008). The undermined class may be tempted to learn from other people who commit crimes such a stealing so as to leave a good life. The social learning theory also suggests that people are not born criminals but it is their environment which influences them to learn and participate in criminal
This paper looks at the different theories of criminal behavior that explain why people commit crimes. It goes deeper to analyze the specific theories in a bid to determine why a person may commit a certain crime and another person under the same circumstances may not. The paper focuses on key factors that motivate unruly behavior among people and why such factors are present in some people and not in others. In doing so, the paper leans more on children in order to determine how delinquency behavior is progressively imparted on them as they undergo developmental trajectory.
In 1982, the political scientist James Q. Wilson and the criminologist George Kelling psychologist, both Americans, published in The Atlantic Monthly in a study that for the first time, established a causal link between disorder and crime. In that study, called The police and neighborhood safety, the authors used the image of broken windows to explain how the disorder and criminality could slowly seep into a community, causing its decline and the consequent drop in quality of life.
Crime exists everywhere. It is exists in our country, in the big cities, the small towns, schools, and even in homes. Crime is defined as “any action that is a violation of law”. These violations may be pending, but in order to at least lower the crime rate, an understanding of why the crimes are committed must first be sought. There are many theories that are able to explain crimes, but three very important ones are rational choice theory, social disorganization theory and strain theory.
What are theories of crime? Why are they important? In this paper, will discuss two crime theories. Social learning theory and the labeling theory. We will compare both crime theories. It will also explain how these theories are related to specific crimes. The two theories discussed will also explain the policy implications. Finally, we will address what types of programs can be created to mitigate specific crimes related to the causation theories.

Crime is a learned behavior and that the surrounding environment does impact a person’s choice in committing a crime. Crime is a major part of how a society functions. With certain societies you have rules that govern what is acceptable to do and what is not either by law, or unspoken rules. (Macionis, 2015,Pages 171-188)

For example, when an individual fails to achieve their goals in life, this individual may choose a different way which might be illegal to achieve their goals. I believe both of these theories are accurate. I also think that it is important to look at these theories to try to fix this problem that can happen to anyone.
