On the opening week, Finding Forrester made 11,112 dollars. This movie is about a teenage boy from the bronx named Jamal who finds enough courage to break into the “window man’s” apartment. The man turns out to be a very well known author named, William Forrester, that ends up encouraging Jamal to go to a private school that offered him a scholarship, because of his academic excellence and basketball talent. In the end, Jamal throughout his learning and growing close with Forrester, gives him the courage to finally go outside to stand up for what is right. Through their experiences Forrester and Jamal grew so close that Forrester ends up leaving everything he owns to Jamal in his will and dies from cancer shortly after leaving for his hometown. …show more content…
As when Jamal found the tenacity to do well on his test, which got him an offer to get into a private school on a full scholarship. Jamal overcame the fear of others seeing how smart he was, scoring good enough on his tests to make others give him a chance at greatness. For instance, “ Although his streetwise background makes him a social outsider amidst a sea of rich, pampered kids, Jamal’s performance on the court and in the classroom earns him respect of many of his teachers and peers” ( Berardinelli, 2000, p. 12). Though Jamal’s background sets him apart from the other students, his talent allows others to accept him. Without determination, Jamal would not be able to fight to prove himself as worthy to be in the school. This matters because if Jamal did not to prove himself, there is a chance that he would not stayed in the private school and went back to his old ways of not doing that best of his ability. Like when Jamal broke into Forrester’s apartment. Jamal’s friends that he use to hangout around dare him to break into the apartment and steal something. At first Jamal is scared, bit builds up the courage to go into the apartment, and though he gets caught, Jamal ends up a not only a friend, but a mentor. Comparatively, movielocity (2001) states “‘Forrester brings out Jamal’s intelligence, and Jamal brings Forrester back into life” (p.2). Basically, Forrester forces Jamal to actually use his talents in writing, while Jamal forces Forrester to come out of his comfort zone to regain happiness in life. This shows Jamal can overcome his hardships by finding the fearlessness to show off what he is good at, as well as Forrester getting out and beyond his fear of what is outside his apartment. Without each other Forrester would have died alone in his apartment, and Jamal would have never been able to have the chances to succeed in basketball, and school. When facing hardships, courage allows us to overcome the
A trait that makes Forrest Gump a great hero is that he is protective, of his friends & Jenny. Jenny was constantly being mistreated & hurt. Whenever Forrest was there & saw this, he punched that guy right in the face to defend her. Jenny also had a horrible childhood & was abused by her dad too. Her house reminded her of what ruined her life, so Forrest had it bulldozed. She never had to look at that awful place ever again. After Jenny died, Forrest looked after Forrest Jr. He taught him to read & do many other things. He cared for & protected his family to the
When Mailor-Callow offers Jamal a scholarship, Forrester tells Jamal that he knows he will accept the offer because Jamal’s current school cannot offer Jamal the answer to a question he needs answered: What does Jamal wish to do with his life? William and Jamal’s relationship is beginning to form and William reveals Jamal’s true self to him in order to nudge him to make the right decision. He informs Jamal that his present school does not fit his desire to write. Jamal also helps Forrester in the words of Rob Brown, whom Levy quotes approvingly, “Jamal Gradually becomes committed not only to his own writing, but to cracking Forrester’s shell” (Levy, 2000, p. 2). Since Jamal and William become trusting friends, Jamal hopes to break his shell, meaning Jamal wishes to unveil Forrester’s true self, a man with a passion for writing.
The characters are different in many ways; Forrester is a male Caucasian in his mid seventies who graduated from Columbia University and lives by himself. Forrester has confined himself to his apartment for ten years. His only foray to the outside world is when he leans out the window to clean off the grime. Forrester pays for all other necessities that are handled by outside service. Another difference is that Forrester is non-confrontational. He would rather handle a problem behind closed doors than confront the person face to face. For example, when Jamal's English professor thinks he used a title from another author's writing without permission he demands Jamal to write a letter of apology and read it in front of ...
In the film Finding Forrester, their was a big conflict between Jamal and Mr. Crawford. Mr. Crawford and Jamal had their difference though out the film. Their were lots of problems that Mr. Crawford had against Jamal. The conflicts were based Jamal race, and his intelligence.
Forrester finds his courage by being outgoing and visiting the school to speak to them, while Jamal finds his courage differently by setting himself outside of the stereotype. Jamal is a very smart boy but he also plays sports; thus, he is outside of the stereotype. Jamal goes to his basketball practice at the school and meets Heartwell. Heartwell is a classmate who plays on the basketball team with Jamal. From the start, Heartwell and Jamal did not get along.
Near the beginning of Finding Forrester, Jamal and his friends are confused by the behavior of “The Window” - who later is discovered to be the author, Forrester himself, in hiding. Because Jamal and his friends are confused by Forrester’s habits - such as peering out of his corner apartment window to the basketball court the young boys haunt and the fact that they have never seen the hermit, pale from decades without seeing the sun, go outside- they find it difficult to trust him. Jamal and Forrester begin to grow closer, though, after his friends dare him to sneak into Forrester’s apartment, take a picture, and steal something. The two begin to grow close - though not without a few bumps in the road - and, as Rob Brown observes, “Forrester brings out Jamal’s intelligence, and Jamal brings Forrester back into life . . .” (Movielocity, 2001, p. 2), both Forrester and Jamal come to count on each other. Forrester is able to give Jamal an unprejudiced point of view he cannot find anywhere else, just as Jamal is able to give Forrester the courage to go out in the world and migrate back into society. When Forrester brandishes a letter opener at Jamal not long after they meet, it is because the former has forgotten how to interact with people, so he and Jamal anger each other. After being secluded from society for nigh on four decades, it is hard for Forrester to trust anyone, and Jamal is confused as to who
In the novel, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the protagonist, Gene Forrester “battled” within himself to find “a separate peace” and in this process directed his emotions at Phineas, his roommate. Forrester and Phineas formed the illusion of a great companionship, but there was a “silent rivalry” between them in Forrester’s mind. Self deceptions in Forrester led him to believe that Phineas was “out to get him” (Forrester). Subconsciously Forrester jounced the limb of the tree and forced Phineas to fall and break his leg. Phineas found out the truth of his “accident” with the help of Leper Lepellier and Brinker Hadley, who were friends that attended Devon High School. Gene Forrester’s conflict between his resentment of and loyalty toward Phineas’ personality and athletic abilities was resolved by the death of Phineas.
Not too many people thought of him as being anything more than that, due to the fact that Jamal makes mediocre grades in his school in the Bronx, he does just enough to get by and to maintain a “C” average. Jamal did not push himself any harder in the classroom than he needed to. Jamal’s passion is writing, He meets a famous old writer named William Forrester through a dare, who has been watching him when he plays basketball at the parking lots. Little do they know when they first meet what a great difference they would each eventually make for each other. William is the first to help Jamal by helping him in his writing. Jamal is a great writer but just doesn’t know it yet. William helps Jamal find himself in his writing, and Jamal prospers into quite a good writer. The help didn’t really stop there either. Jamal would tell William all about his day and
...nd genuine kindness extend further than just treating the President of the United States like a normal person, even though Forrest Gump is ignorant of the ‘issues’ of different people. At the University of Alabama, two African American students are granted acceptance after an enormous ordeal on blacks going to colleges with whites because of the insane amount of racism the United States of America had. As the two African American students made their way up the staircase, one dropped a book and Forrest rushed through police officers and rioters to pick up the book and hand the book to the colored student who dropped it. Forrest’s ignorance definitely contributes to his selflessness and generosity towards people who are different (during the time period in American history the movie was based on), however, it is one of his traits that makes him a true unexpected hero.
Analysis of Film Saving Private Ryan Saving Private Ryan is a film based on the horrific mission of a group. of soldiers who risked life and death to save one man private James. Ryan. In Hollywood there is also a lack of representation with executives because the most of the power resides in people that are ethnically white. Brent Lang and Dave McNary believe that black films are usually not picked up by studios because very few people in powerful positions are black. Therefore, most studios don’t understand what would appeal to black audiences. This causes analysts to undervalue the potential profit of black films, turning executives away from being interested in pursuing black film projects. Examples of black movie profits far exceeding predictions are found in this quote from their article , How Tracking Fails Diverse Movies: “"Straight Outta Compton 's" $60.2 million debut was roughly $20 million more than most trade publications had predicted. "War Room," a faith-based drama about the power of prayer, more than doubled predictions with its $11.3 million launch. And last weekend 's champ, Sony 's "Perfect Guy," exceeded expectations by nearly $15 million when it kicked off with $29.4 million” (Lang and McNary). The history between black and whites in America come into play with the existence of a phenomenon called the “Hollywood plantation arrangement” which alludes to the relationship of black slaves and white slaveowners pre-civil war. This idea describes how “the relationship between African Americans and White Americans is rooted in a tradition of ownership, guidance, and responsibility” which “directly influences African Americans’ ability to access economic power and ownership, thereby limiting creative control and cultural protection (Ndoubou 7). The ruling class, which in Hollywood is the whites, use their power to maintain control by creating these images in media that make the blacks seem lesser...
Forrest’s IQ is significantly lower than the average person’s and as a kid, it restricts him from going to a normal school. Even though it is not him who creates the opportunity to have a proper education, when he is given the chance he makes the most out of it by graduating high school, and going further to attain a college degree. Academics are not the only part of school that pose a challenge to him; Forrest has to put up with exclusion as well as verbal and physical abuse. Even though it is not easy for Forrest to get along with others, he is able to get through his social hindrances by finding someone special named Jenny. She loves him, looks out for him, and through the bullying Forrest ends up finding great happiness with his one special girl. After school, Forrest joins the military, which is one of the best solutions for him. As a result of his IQ, finding a long lasting career would be very difficult. The army is a respected job that Forrest excels at far past the ordinary person. Thus, joining the army creates many opportunities for Forrest, changing his life for the better. He wins a medal of honor and discovers ping pong which he goes on to play in the Olympics. Something far better than honor and fame that he finds in the military is friendship, and out of the friendship Forrest finds riches. There are
