Addiction
Addiction destroys the brain, the soul, and the emotional side of your brain that can take over your feelings and empathy towards others. Addiction destroys the brain because you learn new habits that can be bad for you.The brain gives itself a reward system that goes along with these habits. “If you taste or experience something that you like, that feels good, you're reinforced to do that again” (Rodgers). This gives evidence that your brain trains itself to accept these feelings and addictions. Addictions can train your brain to react, to accept, and to reward bad behaviors. Addiction manipulates the brain into believing that these addictions are good for you, so this will make it very hard to stop the addiction

Or if your hungry your body will send you to the kitchen or wherever to get food. Our body sends signals back and forth all day. “Childress has shown that people who are addicted don’t have to consciously register a cue for it to arouse their reward system”(Smith). This shows that addiction is just an automatic response to the reward system that your body and brain adjust to.There are plenty of addiction that are way more than drugs or alcohol. An example of addiction is, exercise, food, caffeine and many more. These can mess with your mental and physical …show more content…
Caffeine can also have many withdraw symptoms such as headaches, behavior change, and mood differences. These symptoms can cause people to keep drinking so they don’t have to experience these few symptoms. This can be considered both, mental and physical health. This can be very unhealthy because once you get addicted your body learns it’s okay to drink it every morning, which means your body is adjusting to the chemicals and ingredients in coffee, which could be harming
Caffeine raises your blood pressure when you drink/eat it, raising your blood pressure in general is not a good thing but imagine drinking and/or eating caffeine daily, and your blood pressure constantly rising. Another negative aspect is that caffeine can have a disruptive effect on your sleep. The most obvious effect of the caffeine is that it can make it hard for you to fall asleep. It can help you stay awake during the day but can also make you stay awake during the night when you are trying to fall asleep. You can also have withdraws from caffeine, going back to the story “Java Man” the author Malcolm Gladwell considered it a drug and remember you can get addicted to drugs (you can really get addicted to anything). There are plenty more negative ways caffeine can disrupt your lifestyle but you know what they say for every negative thing you can say there can be some
There are many different definitions in which people provide regarding addiction. May (1988) describes that addiction “is a state of compulsion, obsession, or preoccupation that enslaves a person’s will and desire” (p. 14). Individuals who suffer from addiction provide their time and energy toward other things that are not healthy and safe. The book
Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Addiction is normally thought of as drug abuse and alcoholism but people can also be addicted to things such as gambling and sex as well. The controversy on if addiction is a disease or a choice is a continuous debate. Everyone has an opinion on this topic, one side believes it’s a disease, while the other believes it is a choice. Although addiction has been assumed to be a lack of willpower and a weakness, addiction is actually a complex disease that changes the wiring of the brain. Addiction is a brain disease expressed in the form of compulsive behavior (Leshner.) Both devolping
Just as you can get mentally addicted, the body as well can become addicted. This type of addiction is labeled “physical addiction.” Just like the brain, if you take an illicit drug long enough your body changes to accept the feeling as “normal.” “The body and brain come to accept certain levels of the substance as normal” (Nagle 23). The body will now require more and mo...
Main Point: What defines an addiction? According to Psychology Today, “Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance…. or engages in an activity….that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health.” This can range anywhere from drug use to eating disorders, to gambling, to even texting in today’s generation. Shocking to say the least, especially when most people do not even know they are addicted or are an addict until they realize this definition.
Addiction is a very strong word that brings along many negative connotations. When we think of an addiction we imagine someone who depends on a certain substance, most likely alcohol to have their needs met. Addiction is defined by the Webster dictionary as, "a compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal." Even though our society sees addiction and only applies the word to drug addicts and alcoholics, there is a much wider range of subjects that fall under the umbrella of what an addiction truly is. An addiction is a dependency on any kind of materialistic object that you use on a day to day basis that brings
Most people aren’t aware that caffeine can act as a stimulant to the central nervous system. So once someone consumes a caffeinated beverage they may begin to notice a slight change in the way their body begins to feel. Caffeine can be found in many different places such as energy drinks, coffee, candy and also in other common beverages and over the counter medications. Caffeine can have major side effects on those who consume it on a regular routine, but caffeine can also have side effects on those who rarely even consume caffeine . “These side effects include sleep deprivation, nausea, cramping, anxiety, fatigue, and headaches (Braun 73).” Not only does drinking a couple of caffeinated beverages come with its list of side effects, caffeine consumption has also been proven to show drastic changes in the kidneys. “Also, caffeine has been known to weaken the detrusor muscles in the bladder, which provokes the need to urinate (Chambers 42).” So once a person has been consuming caffeine past a certain period of time it begins to become difficult for them to regulate their trips to the bathroom. The list of harm caffeine does on the human body could continue forever, but I will review some of the most relevant categories. Caffeine can have harmful effects on the human body that people are not aware of, therefore I believe that people should be informed what exactly caffeine is and how it affects them directly in terms of where caffeine can be found, the effects it has on the brain and the heart and also the pregnancy effects. Also, people should be provided with a general knowledge of how caffeine can play a part in someone’s life, and some steps to help slow down the consumption of caffeine.
Addiction is something that is hard to stop even though it is interfering with your life. People always be addicted to some activities or some substances; such as, gambling or drugs. There are many causes of addiction; however, the mainly causes of addiction are the place that people live are surrounded by addictions, people‘s thinking react to addictions, and the chemicals’ level that brain releases.
...a sip.’ On the other hand, another disadvantage of caffeine is ‘Caffeine Addiction,’ it has been proven by researchers that like drugs many people will/have an addiction to caffeine. According to a published research, in the Journal of the American Medical Association, done in, research ‘determined that caffeine drinkers who had an average of 357 milligrams of caffeine per day showed classic drug dependence signs and symptoms such as a higher tolerance for caffeine with frequent use, a persistent desire or unsuccessful attempt at limiting their intake, withdrawal symptoms when they cut back on their intake and choosing to continue consuming caffeine in spite of the knowledge that caffeine might cause them psychological and physical problems.’ The usual effects of caffeine withdrawal are ‘headaches, exhaustion, being cranky, lack in concentration and even depression.
Addiction is the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. Drug addiction, in particular, changes the way the brain functions and changes the way the body distinguishes pleasure. This is why some people view addiction as a disease rather than a choice. Addiction is also a behavior, which is an action. We choose our own actions and we chose to keep going with the same actions even though we know the consequences. Making addiction a choice rather than a disease. Any addiction starts out with a choice and can be ended with a choice.
Addiction is characterized by inability to consistently abstain. Addiction is a habit that formed from a continual use of a stimulant. Addiction is Addiction causes impairment in behavioral control, and craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response.
...roblem. Our society is becoming engrossed with caffeine and many people are falling ill to its unnoticed negative properties. It’s important to watch how much caffeine intake your body is receiving each day in the foods and drinks you consume. Caffeine is not a bad drug but be careful to watch for symptoms of withdrawal and caffeine intoxication. It can be dangerous for your body if to much stress is put on it. Remember, there is always decaffeinated options and sometimes these are the best to keep your body healthy.
In today’s society many struggle with addiction. What exactly is addiction though? Addiction is the result of the consumption of a substance or the participation of an activity to the extent where it is uncontrollable and interferes with the responsibilities of life (PSYCH). Addiction can be anything from drugs, alcohol, and gambling to exercise, video games, and food.
Many individuals think addiction is only caused by drugs or alcohol; however, this isn’t true. The official definition of addiction according to Webster dictionary is "a compulsive need for and use of a habit forming substance characterized by tolerance, and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal" (“Understanding different”, n.d.). Meaning, an individual begins to
Disease of addiction can be a lot like falling in love. Imagine someone falling in love with the woman or man of their dreams only to find out that they are abusive, or shows qualities of a ‘gold digger’. Everyone tells them the person is toxic but, yet they stay in the relationship
