A total of 65 shootings were reported on school campuses in 2017. Furthermore, in 2018, over 18 school shootings have already occurred so far. These numbers show us how easy people get guns in the United States. On the 21st of April 1999, one of the worst high school shooting occurred in the U.S. history. At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, two teenagers went to on a shooting spree, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. This high school shooting let Michael Moore, who is an American documentary filmmaker decided to make a documentary called, Bowling for Columbine, about related gun in the United State. On countless occasions, Moore evoked sadness and grief for victims who died of shootings, anger against the killers, and hope and for those who are now forced to live with the physical and mental scars of different events involving guns. The most prominent example was when showing security camera footage of the Columbine Shooting with the 911 call of the incident in the background. Aside from that there was testimony from concerned citizens from the Columbine incident and other shooting incidents, such as the Buell Elementary school shooting where a first grader shot and killed another. In another case Moore used graphic images to augment the persuasiveness of the presented facts, as shown to the right where Moore argued that America has had a history of violent government action. The another example was when Moore talked about prior school shootings, like the Columbine High School Shooting and the shooting death of a kindergarten girl, Kayla, in Flint, Michigan by a fellow classmate. These scenes made audience felt sympathy the pain of the families and the fear of the people involved directly in the violent act. Moore also played a slow sad song when showing some of the camera footage from Columbine. The effect of that gloomy ballad make it difficult to watch and leaves the audience disheartened. The music was also one of the methods Moore used. At 0:26:03, while the scene which showed horrible images and dead people, “ What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong was being played. The images and music were absolutely opposite. The irony made audience pay attention this movie because audience wanted to understand what was hidden meaning of this irony. For another example, at 0:50:58 in this documentary, the scene was shooting each other. It was trying to show how many people was killed by guns and how the United State had a highly number comparing another countries. As background in this scene, mfgnifical classic song was played. The use of archival footage has a significant impact on the audience 's emotional status as we witness the realism of the event. The black and white video monitor has a very sharp contrast between what we had previously watched tracking down the High School halls. Before the scene was still dull and lifeless, but you could still see the colour in the building, however now we are able to see the black and white cold hearted reality of the crisis. Changes in colour portray the haunting experience in a symbolic way. The students are diving under tables, crawling for their safety, hoping not to be victimised.
The director uses the music as a symbol for the audience to determine what person belongs to which group. At the beginning of the movie when there is a standoff between the blacks and the whites the director uses a commentary sound to show the atmosphere of a prejudice and hostile city they are in. The lighting is very dim which automatically tells us that the mood of the movie is dark and there is a lot of anger among many people.

CONCLUSION All in all penetrating, contradictory gossipy Michael Moore’s "Columbine" a strong and effective yet moralizing castigation of gun violence is an eye opener for all Americans. "I wanted to say something much larger about how society is manipulated by politicians and corporations into being in a constant state of panic and fear," Moore asserted, "and how once you get the population whipped up like that, conservative regimes can get just about anything they want out of the people without firing a shot." The United States will not soon forget the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut that came just two weeks before Christmas last year. This tragic event resulted in the death of twenty students and eight adults. Although the event shocked the nation, rampage shootings are nothing new. Over the years, many families have lost loved ones to these horrific events. As a result, these mass shootings such as the one that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary caught public attention leading to a push to find the cause of these events. Out of this research a variety of possible causes came to light consisting of arguments stating that high school bullying, availability of guns, mental illness, violent movies and video games are the cause of mass shootings. However, these researchers and debaters tend to ignore the role of massive media coverage in the increase of copycat shootings in the United States.
In this case, the event was the murder of 13 and wounding of 23 persons at the Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The event took place on April 22, 1999 and, because of the subsequent suicide of the two teenage perpetrators, observers could only speculate on their motivation. While students were still hiding from the gunmen and while the police were still plotting their strategy, the media coverage began. Perhaps two impulses led to the coverage. First of all, the victims were not the children of the Hutus or East Timorese or even the Kosovos. These were "our" children and the parents our "friends." Their grief could have been ours. In fact, in a month plus a few days, five million dollars were donated to the survivors and the victim families even without there being a major fund-raising drive (Morning Edition, NPR, June 8, 1999).
School shootings seemed like a new phenomenon, but they occurred for the majority of American history. The first school shooting occurred On July 26, 1764, when a Lenape Indian shot and killed nine children and the school master of the Greencastle, Pennsylvania school (Galvin): as noted in Appendix A. Since 1764, the number of school shootings rose exponentially. In the 1990’s, eighty-six school shootings occurred and between 2000 and 2014, 110 shootings transpired since 2000 (Killam,2008). The development of semiautomatic weapons lead to an increase in deaths. A study conducted in 1990 found through the years of 1986 to 1990; 71 people died, 201 wounded, and 242 people held hostage by school shooters(Galvin). While the area a school serves as one factor in the number of violent acts committed per year, school shootings have not been connected to this. The schools in Chicago dealt with more violent acts, but Sandy Hook Elementary, a small city school had relatively few violent acts committed by students.
School shootings have altered American history greatly over the past two decades. From 1997 to 2007, there have been more than 40 school shootings, resulting in over 70 deaths and many more injuries. School shoot-outs have been increasing in number dramatically in the past 20 years. There are no boundaries as to how old the child would be, or how many people they may kill or injure. At Mount Morris Township, Michigan, on February 29th, 2000, there was a 6 year old boy who shot and killed another 6 year old girl at the Buell Elementary School with a .32 caliber pistol. And although many shootings have occurred at High Schools or Middle Schools, having more guns on those campuses would not be a good environment for children to grow up in. However, on a college campus, the pupils attending are not children anymore; the age range is from 17 to mid 20’s. Therefore they understand the consequences associated to the use of weapons and have gained more maturity. In April 16th, 2007, at Blacksburg, Virginia, there was a shooting rampage enacted by Sung-Hui Cho (23 years, from Centreville, VA) who fired over 170 rounds, killing 32 victims, before taking his own life at the Virginia Tech campus. Colleges and Universities would be a much safer place, for student and teacher, if guns were permitted on campus for self-defense purposes.
Many people believe that these shootings have occurred is because the availability of weapons in our society. This is not true. Guns have been in our society for hundreds of years. Before 1968 anyone could buy a gun through the mail with cash, and a hand-written statement that they were of legal age and without criminal record. (Bridgeman 14a) Yet in 1968, students didn't go to school and try to commit mass murder.
Public mass shootings have increased at an alarming rate over the past three decades and have become a growing concern for the people of the United States. It has appeared that approximately every few months, media outlets report incidences of tragedy involving a sole gunman targeting groups of people with the intent to harm or extinguish life due to various motives. Recent research data indicated that over 80 public mass shootings have occurred in the United States since 1983. Some of the more recent shootings to date are: Marysville-Pilchick High in October 2014; Santa Barbara, California in May 2014; Fort Hood, Texas U.S. Army base in April 2014; Washington Navy Yard in September 2013; Sandy Hook Elementary, Connecticut in December 2012; and Aurora Century 16 Movie Theater in Aurora, Colorado in July 2012.
To illustrate, he uses many gut-wrenching clips of several shootings, displaying the horrors of gun deaths, bringing out the sympathetic side of people. Besides that, the story of a 6 year old boy firing at his 6 year old girl classmate certainly makes people react negatively to guns, as they do not want their loved ones to turn into a victim of gun violence. Another clip shows the father of a Columbine victim, stating “There is something wrong in this country when a child can point a gun in the face of another child like they did to my son”. With such a devastating situation, it undeniably plays a role in persuading others to feel as the father did. On a brighter note, Moore manages to include some amusing scenes in the film as well; he breaks down other people’s walls and gives them a good laugh. Humor can be found in the part when a first grader gets suspended from school for pointing a chicken strip at their teacher, or the scene where Moore opens several unlocked doors in Canada. On the other hand, this brings up the question of how many doors he tried to open before finding the ones as shown, once again leaving the audience with doubt about his persuasive ways.
