"You're a human being, not an animal. You have the right to be loved" (262). "Son of the Revolution" by Liang Heng and Judith Shapiro was a book that showed how inhumane many of the aspects of Chinese life were during the Cultural Revolution. The book followed Liang Heng through many of his childhood memories to his departure from China in his twenties. The book applied a real face to the important movements during the Cultural Revolution, the effects that "the cult of Mao" had on society and Heng, and the way the period affected Heng's personal family life.
In the book, “Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman,” written by Marjorie Shostak; is a culturally shocking and extremely touching book about a woman who had gone through many struggles and horrific tragedies in her life. This book also emphasizes the perspective of most of the women in the society. There are many striking issues in this book that the people of the !Kung tribe go through.
One of the main characters is a girl named Jasmine but they call her Jazz for short. Jazz is basically a goth girl and she has black hair with a little pink on top. She goes to high school and is around the age of 15. Jazz is in a pretty bad mood usually but it just depends on what she is doing. The other main character's name is Antonia. Antonia is a very smart girl and helps other people out with their problems. She is like a councilor. She has about shoulder length dirty blond hair and is pretty average in height for her age. She is usually in a good mood but sometimes she can get mad or sad. The last main character is Antonia's mom. She has pretty good attitudes depending on what she feels like. She is in her mid-30's.
All the characters are products of their own society, Veronese society. Status is everything, money buys anything. Woman must marry well and produce many offspring. Men believe strongly in defending their honor by any means available especially violence.
Book Review of The Subtle Knife by Phillip Pullman This week I chose to read the novel 'The Subtle Knife' written by Phillip Pullman. Philip Pullman was born in Norwich on 19th October 1946. The early part of his life was spent travelling all over the world, because his father and then his step father were both in the Royal Air Force. He spent part of his childhood in Australia, where he first met the wonders of comics, and grew to love Superman and Batman in particular. From the age of 11, he lived in North Wales, having moved back to Britain.
Murder mysteries are one of the most popular genres of novels today. More often than not, these books are fiction. Royal Murders by Dulcie M. Ashdown is a non-fiction book about murder. This novel travels back thousands of years and tells the story of murders in royal households, like the Scottish monarchy of 1570 to the evil doings of Tsar Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible). Although the book could have gone into more detail, it is interesting and informative because the background information is set out in detail, and book reviews suggest that this book is for anyone who shares a deep love for history and mystery.
In the novel Segu, Maryse Conde beautifully constructs personal and in depth images of African history through the use of four main characters that depict the struggles and importance of family in what is now present day Mali. These four characters and also brothers, by the names of Tiekoro, Siga, Naba, and Malobali are faced with a world changing around their beloved city of Bambara with new customs of the Islamic religion and the developing ideas of European commerce and slave trade. These new expansions in Africa become stepping stones for the Troare brothers to face head on and they have brought both victory and heartache for them and their family. These four characters are centralized throughout this novel because they provide the reader with an inside account of what life is like during a time where traditional Africa begins to change due to the forceful injection of conquering settlers and religions. This creates a split between family members, a mixing of cultures, and the loss of one’s traditions in the Bambara society which is a reflection of the (WHAT ARE SOME CHANGES) changes that occur in societies across the world.
The first main character is Samantha Keyes, also known as Sammy. Sammy has a great personality. She's very spunky, creative and curious about everything. She will always try to invest into something and learn more about it. She lives with her grandma, because her mom went to hollywood to try to become successful as an actor. She has some really close friends, like Dot and Marissa, but a lot of people at school don’t get her and make fun of her. The next main character is Ritas Keyes or “Grams”, Sammy's grandmother. Sammy

I read the book entitled Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. It was an amazing, non-fiction book about a dying old man and what he teaches to his student. Morrie Schwartz was one of Mitch’s professors at Brandeis University in Massachusetts. Morrie was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, in 1994. This book is about the last few months of his life, and the interactions Morrie had with Mitch during that time.
The storyline is very simple and straight forward. However, there are still some things I don’t understand and have to use a dictionary.
The characters are very intricate and detailed. Are they based on anyone? Are they based off of you and any past relationships you’ve had?
The anime and manga I will be discussing is Revolutionary Girl Utena. Revolutionary Girl Utena created in 1997 by group called B-Papas with director Ikuhara Kunihiko who was also responsible for Sailor Moon. “Utena features shimmering pastel graphics, zany humor, and appealing Shojo characters, but its content is far more adult” (Napier 172). Revolutionary Girl Utena is a metaphysical surreal allegorical series. A quick background of the story is Revolutionary Girl Utena revolves around the progantist Utena, a tomboyish girl who dresses as prince and has a prince-like personality. Which she decide from her childhood when she was an impressed by a kind prince leading to the decision to dress and express herself in that manner. She, Utena, attends
...sequently, the identity of Japanese women within popular culture would transform with the empowerment of Japanese women. They create a new type of identity ‘female masculinity’ which reinforces the reversal of gender roles and the alternative world that it achieves. In a patriarchal society, the characters should be able to influence and inspire the audience to gain confidence and challenge the status quo. From another viewpoint, gender is a type of social construction insofar as they needed the feminine side of masculinity to have a balanced world and to explain it. Although, there will always be a fine line between the ideal and reality because the films are supposed to represent the ideal alternative to the world to resolve the social issues that are not directly discussed. Reality is just supposed to be influenced by it and to understand the problems of society.
