It is inevitable that everyone suffers in their lifetime. No one has a perfect life, at one point or another every person in this world will have a bad day, week, or even year. Everyone experiences their own losses. The way we react to those losses determines what happens to the rest of our lives. One of the most popular books in the Bible is the book of Ruth. In this short story, a young Moabite widow whom down the line becomes the ancestor of David, and later of Jesus Christ, all through the marriage of a man they call Boaz. Beyond the surface of the story, there is a consistent theme of loyalty. In the book of Ruth, all the characters deal with events that hurt or scare them. They both were women of resourcefulness, Naomi did not have to worry as much as Ruth, for she had family still in those lands. One relative was a rich man on her deceased husband’s side who goes by the name of Boaz. During this time in history women mostly were the ones that did the management and production of the food in the fields. Some even did what they call gleaning, this is where they would collect the leftover crops from farmers’ fields after they have already harvest. Ruth took part in this action harvesting barley in Boaz’s fields ensuring that she and Naomi survived. “She came and gleaned in the field behind the reapers. As it happened, she came to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech. Just then Boaz came from Bethlehem.” Here Ruth uses the phrase ‘as it happened’, this shows meaning that this is Gods purpose, it was meant to happen. This is another example of loyalty in the story. Ruth is staying true to Naomi and doing all she can to take care of her, which is Gods way, and for doing so she will be blessed for this. Putting Boaz, who was a good man into the life of Ruth. This is the answers that she needed he would be a good husband, he is good natured, very well respected among the people, and well to so in the financial aspect.
