In the book of Daniel, many important events take place. The rise and fall of empires, the miracles that took place, the prophecies that were proclaimed, and the delivery out of captivity—these are just some of the events that occur within Daniel’s pages. The book of Daniel is a great source of both Jewish and world history, and it contains some of the most relevant prophetical and historical information to date. Needless to say, with so many important events that occurred in this book, getting a structured timeline is essential in understanding the context of these events.

It had already been prophesied that Cyrus would come to power and free the people of Israel, and this year marked the beginning of his reign. Cyrus became king of Anshan, which was a small Persian kingdom formerly ruled by his father (Phillips). Shortly thereafter, in 551 B.C., Daniel had the important prophetical vision of the ram and the he goat (Phillips).
547 B.C was the year in which the foundation for the return from captivity began to be set in place. The title “king of Persia” was finally ascribed to Cyrus (Phillips), who became responsible for the fall of Babylon in 539 B.C. (Phillips). His kingdom, now joined with the kingdom of the Medes, was now the world’s major power. One year later (538 B.C.), he allows the Jews to return to their homeland, which was doubtless a heralded celebration. 536 B.C marked the laying of the foundation for the rebuilding of the temple (Phillips).
The writing of the book of Daniel is calculated to have been completed by approximately 530 B.C., the ninth year of Cyrus’ reign (Various). Although the Israelites most likely often thought that they had been abandoned during their 70-year captivity, God was working all along. Joseph Hirsch’s painting Daniel was painted in 1976-1977. In 1978 during the153rd Annual Exhibition of the National Academy of Design, it won the First Benjamin Altman (Figure) prize. It measures 38 inches by 45 inches (96.52 cm x 114.3 cm) with a five inch gold wood frame surrounding it. The medium is oil on canvas. Everything within the painting is centered to draw your eyes to the action of the turned head and the pointed finger. According to the placard next to the painting this is a modern day version of the biblical story of Belshazzar’s Feast following the sacking of Jesualism from the Book of Daniel. From this point on, each figure within the painting will be addressed as Hirsch intended. The painting depicts a seated king, a dozing courtesan and Daniel. The three figures are the focal point of the composition. Hirsch uses a strong color palette to give the painting a luxurious and wealthy feel. Although the detail is not miniscule, the composition as a whole is easily understood. The use of oil paint allowed Hirsch to play with the composition as it was created.

When Jerusalem fell to the conquering Babylonians in 587 BC, most of what was important to the Hebrew people was gone. They lost their holy city, the Temple was destroyed, and the Davidic monarchy ended (Beasley 221). Following the destruction of Jerusalem, the Babylonian king, Nebuchadrezzar, deported most of the population to other cities, including Babylon. These exiles remained there for about fifty years until the Persian forces, under king Cyrus, took the city of Babylon in 539 BC. The Persian policies concerning captured and exiled peoples were quite different than those of the Babylonians, and because of this King Cyrus allowed the exiles to return to Jerusalem in 538 BC to rebuild the city and the Temple.

It is also sometimes hard for us to understand God's actions because we think of him simply loving and caring rather than ruthless and violent. We need to understand that the creation of mankind is taking place in the recordings of these scriptures and so things may not be as customary as we would like to think. I believe that God has a plan for everyone. And, in the case of Saul, he had a plan to take away his kingdom in order to pass it on to David so the formation of history could continue. I also think this passage, like many other passages from the Bible, has a message linked to it, a lesson to the story if you will. The lesson is to prove that God's unlimited power must never be taken for granted or there surely will be hell to pay.
The Book of Daniel took place in between 605 BC and 530 BC however the message is still relevant in today’s society, 2544 years later. Different themes are found in the book. These themes teach a lesson which can be used into today’s society. Even though the times, tradition and circumstances are different now than it was back then the messages are greatly relevant. The main themes of the book were about faithfulness toward what you believe in no matter what society says or the dangers. God is trustworthy and does everything for a reason no matter if the person is in the worst spot ever in life they have to believe there is something better in the future. Also Gods ability to save his children in the face of danger and will give them justice, and that god gives messages in mysterious ways.
The Book of Daniel is the only full-blown apocalyptic book in the Protestant recognized version of the Canon. A literary device divides the book into two halves. Chapters 1-6 are a collection of stories that introduces the reader to Daniel and three other Israelites as unwilling guests of the Babylonian Empire ruled by Nebuchadnezzar. The second half, Chapters 7-12, consists of apocalyptic imagery of deformed beasts and the heavenly court. The focus of this paper will be on chapter 7, which serves as a bridge between the two halves.

Correspondingly, other canonical prophetic books interpret Yahweh’s will during periods of social or political crisis.4 Many minor prophets wrote during one of the three critical periods: the Assyrian Crisis, the Babylonian threat, or the postexilic readjustment.5 During the Babylonian threat of the late-seventh century, Habakkuk served as a link between God and humanity. The Assyrian kingdom, led by Shalmanasar V, forced the people of Judah into harsh conditions through a heartless deportation. In time, political drama spread throughout the region. After 612 B.C.E. when Assyria fell to Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, Habakkuk wrote his prophetic book, focusing on the agony of humankind’s struggle to progress in such a wicked world. His message of faith and morality transcended the evil within society, ultimately revealing to the Israelites that justice would prevail.
Cambyses I, one of the earliest Achaemenid kings, ruled Persia around 600 B.C. Upon his death, his son Cyrus II took over as king in 559 B.C., and later became known as Cyrus the Great. As the ruler of Persia at the age of 41, Cyrus wanted to gain more power to strengthen the Persian Empire. Revelation identifies itself as “both an “apocalypse”…and as prophecy”, making it distinctly different from the rest of the New Testament. “Jewish apocalyptic literature flourished in the centuries following the completion of the OT canon”, and it is scattered throughout the Old Testaments in books such as Daniel, Ezekiel, and Isaiah. Apocalyptic literature is full of “visions that dramatize the prophet’s admission to God’s heavenly council”, and convey their meaning primarily through symbolism. John brings a “balanced message of comfort, warning, and rebuke” in Revelation, testifying to the end of the world and the second coming of Jesus Christ.
