Bono Paul David Hewson otherwise known by his stage name as Bono. He has many talents such as being talented, successful, and generous but, is he a good example good example of a renaissance man? Bono is a good example of a renaissance man because he is talented and successful musician, and an activist who co-founded organizations such as DATA, Product RED and EDUN. Bono is a talented and successful musician. He is the front man of U2 an Irish rock band the he co-founded with his friends the Edge, Larry Mullen Jr, and Adam Clayton. “As the lead singer of U2, he has sold 130 million albums, won fourteen Grammys, played numerous sold-out world tours…” (book description) U2 is a successful band, they have won many Grammys and have sold massive …show more content…

DATA stands for Debt, AIDS, and Trade for Africa. Bono wants to help save the lives of Africans who are dying of a treatable disease. And he stated the fact that “Sixty-five hundred Africans are dying every day of a preventable, treatable disease...Why? Because we don’t put the same value on African life as we put on a European or an American life.” (81) He said this to make clear the reason so many people in Africa are dying is because we do not have equality for different races still at this point in time. DATA is trying to stop this and get medicine needed to help Africans and to provide equality in Africa. Bono founded DATA to help get them the medicine and to improve their lives. Bono has visited Africa to help educate the people of how to be healthy. “Myself and Ali [His wife] worked on a program where you could teach children through songs or one-act plays…We would teach them the things they needed to know in order to not be sick…The children would then go around, singing these songs and so teach their parents.” (222-223) He and his wife educated the children who would sing and pass the knowledge on to their parents and other. Product RED is raise money for DATA. “Bono and Bobby Shriver launched product (RED) to raise money from businesses to buy AIDS drugs for people in Africa unable to afford them. Product (RED) has an ongoing relationship with a number of iconic global brands that sell (RED) products and donate a percentage of the profits directly to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.” Product RED was set up by Bono and Bobby to help raise money for medicine and help the sick people suffering with AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria because the people of Africa are very poor so they are unable to get needed medicine for cure-able diseases. Bono also co-founded EDUN a clothing line to benefit Africa, with his wife Ali. He explains “I’ve started to see commerce…as the way forward for Africa…I’ve set up a company with my wife and the designer Rogun, called EDUN. It’s a clothing line…We have this concept of ‘four respects’ at the heart of our company: One, respect for where the clothes are made. We want them eventually to be all made in Africa, but certainly the developing world. Two, respect for who makes them. Three, respect for the materials that they are made of…Four, respect for the people who are going to buy them-the consumer.” Bono made this company to help Africa get out of poverty.
