What would it be like to not be able to hear – to not the wind rustling the trees, the crackling of a fire, the singing of birds, the words spoken by those around us? Although most people can hear because of the wonderful and intricate system that God has given us, there are many people who live with a reality of hearing loss and miss out on hundreds of sounds every day that we take for granted. But thankfully God has designed our bodies in such a way that some of these people can be helped by a hearing aid called a bone conduction hearing system. We will explore what it is, what kinds of hearing loss it helps, how it works, and how all of this points to the existence of a Divine Creator.

Bone conduction hearing systems make use of this fact and send vibrations, via bones in the skull, to the cochlea. A bone conduction hearing system has three parts: a titanium implant, an abutment, and a sound processor. These three parts work together to transmit vibrations to the cochlea. The titanium implant is placed surgically inside the bone behind the ear. Because it is titanium, a process known as osseointegration is able to happen, where the titanium implant and the bone actually grow together, making the implant very stable and increasing the effectiveness of the device because the implant and bone are in direct contact with one another. Osseointegration is important because it prevents a fibrous capsule from forming around the implant which would impede the conduction of sound to the bone. What I found most interesting about Jarashow’s presentation were the two opposing views: Deaf culture versus medical professionals. Within the Deaf culture, they want to preserve their language and identity. The Deaf community wants to flourish and grow and do not view being deaf as a disability or being wrong. Jarashow stated that the medical field labels Deaf people as having a handicap or being disabled because they cannot hear. Those who are Deaf feel as though medical professionals are trying to eliminate them and relate it to eugenics. It is perceived that those in that field are trying to fix those who are Deaf and eliminate them by making them conform to a hearing world. Cochlear implants are used for people who are completely Deaf, not being able to hear a single noise or hard of hearing individuals as well. Sound waves go into the ear, entering the ear canal, then hitting the eardrums in which vibrates. Vibration from the eardrum pass major parts in the ear, them being the bone called the Malleus, Incus, and Stapes. These three main parts in the ear amplify the pulse, and then are picked up by small hair-like calls in the cochlea. Moving as the vibration hits, evidence is then sent through the auditory nerve then to the brain, the brain processes the data and in which we describe as sound. A cochlear implant is a highly invasive procedure where the surgeon drills a small hole into the individual’s skull; opening the Malleus bone then a small hole is drilled into the cochlea where the electrodes are inserted. This procedure takes about 2-4 hours, and surgeons use general anesthesia. Having a magnet under the skin/skull for the receptor to hook to, and also have to shave out all little hairs around the cochlea, and spending $40,000 for this implant. Deaf children should not get the cochlear implant because it’s a dramatically change in ones life and affects the way they feel and see themselves.

The ear is looked upon as a miniature receiver, amplifier and signal-processing system. The structure of the outer ear catching sound waves as they move into the external auditory canal. The sound waves then hit the eardrum and the pressure of the air causes the drum to vibrate back and forth. When the eardrum vibrates its neighbour the malleus then vibrates too. The vibrations are then transmitted from the malleus to the incus and then to the stapes. Together the three bones increase the pressure which in turn pushes the membrane of the oval window in and out. This movement sets up fluid pressure waves in the perilymph of the cochlea. The bulging of the oval window then pushes on the perilymph of the scala vestibuli. From here the pressure waves are transmitted from the scala vestibuli to the scala tympani and then eventually finds its way to the round window. This causes the round window to bulge outward into the middle ear. The scala vestibuli and scala tympani walls are now deformed with the pressure waves and the vestibular membrane is also pushed back and forth creating pressure waves in the endolymph inside the cochlear duct. These waves then causes the membrane to vibrate, which in turn cause the hairs cells of the spiral organ to move against the tectorial membrane. The bending of the stereo cilia produces receptor potentials that in the end lead to the generation of nerve impulses.

The journey for someone who is deaf can be challenging, but those challenges can be overcome with perseverance. Today I am going to share with you the story of my journey with deafness and see that if I am my disability. It is an experience that has shaped my life through body, mind, and spiritual matter.
Hearing is known to be an automatic function of the body. According to the dictionary, hearing is, “the faculty or sense by which sound is perceived; the act of perceiving sound,” (“hearing…”). Hearing is a physical and involuntary act; therefore, unless one is born with a specific form of deafness, everyone has the natural ability to hear sounds. Sounds constantly surround us in our everyday environments, and because we are so accustomed to hearing certain sounds we sometimes don’t acknowledge them at all (or “listen” to them). The dictionary definition of listening is, “to give attention with the ear; attend closely for the purpose of hearing,” (“listening…”). This differs from hearing in that this is a voluntary action, and we have control over what we choose to listen to. As stated by William Seiler and Melissa Beall, “You don’t have to work at hearing; it just happens… Listening, on the other hand, is active and requires energy and desire,” (145).
