Bobbi Brown and Her Path To Success Bobbi Brown is one of the makeup and skincare industry’s most influential people. She, along with her very successful brand, has become a household name. Through the use of good quality ingredients and strategic advertising she was able to climb her way to the top, make a name for herself, and ultimately became a positive role model for other women who did not want to stay at home for the rest of their lives.Growing up, Bobbi Brown was always interested by makeup. When looking back at her childhood, she calls those memories to mind when she says, ‘I remember watching my mother apply her white eyeshadow and black liner in her blue gilded bathroom--she was glamorous, but fresh-looking’(Premiere). to pursue her passion and in doing so, decided to go to Boston’s Emerson College where she earned her degree in theatrical makeup. Upon completion of her degree, she decided that New York City was the place to go to make a name for herself as a makeup artist. While there, she worked tirelessly and because of that, she “slowly built up contacts and experienced the challenges typical of most freelance makeup artists trying to make it in Manhattan” (Premiere). Due to her work ethic and superior skills, Bobbi Brown earned her way into the spotlight. The world finally took notice of her work when she landed “her first Vogue cover with renowned photographer Patrick Demarchelier and supermodel Naomi Campbell” (Bobbi's History). Hanna 2One day, while working at a magazine photoshoot, she had a choice encounter with a chemist. She, hating the current makeup out there due to its inability to create a flawless natural look, relayed her thoughts to the chemist. He then, following her instructions, created a lipstick that ‘didn't smell, wasn't dry or greasy and looked like lips, only better’ (Premiere). “With just five thousand dollars and a simple line of 10 lipsticks, Bobbi Brown cosmetics launched 25 years ago in Bergdorf Goodman in New York” (Hall). Her nude lipsticks instantly became a hit! On her first day, she sold 100 lipsticks; far exceeding her expectations. Women loved that there were shades of lipsticks that accentuated and enhanced their varying shades of skin types. After all, her company motto has always been to offer “universally flattering products created with uncompromising quality and an intuitive sense of what every woman wants: to look and feel like herself, only prettier and more confident” (Bobbi Brown). That standard of highlighting a woman’s natural features instead of plastering products in an attempt to alter a woman’s looks is what made and continues to make Bobbi Brown cosmetics so popular among so many women around the world. Wherever one goes, they will always find a Bobbi Brown cosmetic line; largely due to her popularity and her brand’s open policy of enhancing what is already there instead of creating the illusion of what is not. Her natural looks are accessible to so many women because of her brands’ large variety of shades. To further emphasize this point, it is said that every minute, two of her Long-Wear Gel Eyeliners are sold globally. After growing considerably in size, Bobbi Brown sold her cosmetic line to Estee Lauder. When asked why Estee Lauder and not another company, she replied, “Because I fell in love with Leonard Lauder, and I trusted him when he said, ‘I want you to do what you’re really good at, and I’ll do the things you’re not good at. I promise that you’ll have creative control.’ And I’ve never had a problem” (Beard). She was able to remain in control of her brand while at the same Hanna 3time receiving assistance in the areas she was not as well versed in. Because she was backed by such a large company, she was able to further her brand and her message to a larger and more broad audience than she originally had. The same year she joined forces with Estee Lauder, Bobbi Brown also released her skin care line which was meant to properly prepare the customers’ face for a flawless application of her makeup. Bobbi Brown also had many fruitful and promising partnerships with many large organizations and groups. One, for example, is a year long partnership she had with “Dress for Success”. She, along with her company, has donated over one million dollars for Dress for Success. She even took it a step further, and created a cosmetic line where all the proceeds go directly to that organization in hopes that the monetary funds would enable them to help women enter back into the workforce, support themselves, and make a living worthy of them. She has even hired women from that program and taught classes in an effort to help their cause. Another major collaboration was with the “Pretty Powerful” campaign. They did the campaign to help women and young girls in underprivileged and developing parts of the world receive and education. They also donated 300,000 dollars to “Kiva”, an organization that provides women in underprivileged parts of the world with microloans in an effort to help them start their own businesses and eventually be able to fully support themselves. She also designed a “Pretty Powerful Pot Rouge” which became a bestseller. All proceeds went to helping women empower and support themselves.Besides creating a makeup and skincare brand, Bobbi Brown has accomplished many other things. She has written eight books; all of which either became bestsellers or were on the times best sellers list; in many cases, both! Later on,“Bobbi unveils the Studio in Montclair, NJ, featuring the brand’s first freestanding store, training space and studio for editorial shoots” Hanna 4(Bobbi's History).
She also created her own website for her makeup called bobbibrowncosmetics.com. She also released an extremely popular and loved magazine/ blog called Everything Bobbi Brown. She, in a collaboration with Safilo, launched her own collection of both sunglasses and eyeglasses. She has also been very influential in both major internet companies and areas of importance in our country’s politics. For example, in 2010, President Obama appointed Bobbi Brown as a part of the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations also known as ACTPN. In other news, in 2014, she was appointed Editor-in-chief of yahoo beauty. Today, Bobbi Brown’s company is one of the most well known and beloved brands out there. “Today, the brand sells more than 23 million products a year, the equivalent of about 2,735 products an hour, or 46 every minute. Bobbi Brown cosmetics are available in 74 countries and sold in more than 2173 stores” (Hall). However, Bobbi Brown is no longer a part of Bobbi Brown cosmetics. On the company’s 25th anniversary, she announced that she would no longer be a part of the company; she feels that it is time for her to move on. She would always be found backstage during fashion week showcasing the newest and best looks, on the sets of the Today Show and the Oprah Winfrey Show giving how-to advice to help women feel and look more beautiful. Recently, she transitioned into the health and wellness market to pursue yet another one of her dreams. She …show more content…
created another company, “Evolution_18, a line consisting of everything from probiotics to protein powders” (Abouarrage). When asked why she chose to go into this market she replied by saying, ‘I have always been a health nut. I have always taught the people working for me or the public that it's not just about putting makeup on your face to look healthy; you have to be healthy’ (Abouarrage). She then continued, speaking from her own experience when she said, ‘I've always taught lifestyle things from how to be a busy working mom to how to Hanna 5fit in exercise, and I'm someone who is really visual and I'm really curious and I always think that there's something out there that could be better.
So, when I had this opportunity with these products, I started to think what is wrong with the space right now. And what's wrong for me is that I'm overwhelmed, I have too many things in my cabinet... So I really wanted to sit down and simplify it, but mostly I wanted to create products that help the issues that we have; the products are lifestyle-inspired’ (Abouarrage). She then utilized the skills she had previously acquired from making makeup, and with the help of an ayurvedic doctor, she went to the lab and created another wonderful line of products. She later spoke about how this line is an expression of her personal mantra: beauty from within. Bobbi Brown is a strong woman who used her brain, her skills, and her love for what she does to create many different brands and products that because an instant hit no matter what it was. She was able to not only build a prosperous makeup empire, but also a health and wellness line, a sunglasses and glasses brand, a stand-alone store, and two different websites. She, expressing her love for helping others, also had many collaborations with different nonprofit organizations in an effort to assist women with not only a proper education, but also with feeling and looking beautiful, earning a salary and supporting themselves, and also keeping women and young girls from having

The transition to modern consumerism involved not just the introduction of responsible product formulation, but fundamental transformations of social behavior. Women were at the heart of this development in the cosmetic industry, and we will consider the contributions of two of them: Annie Turnbo Malone and Madame C. J. Walker. These women and their contemporaries paved the way for Estee Lauder and Mary Kay Ash in our time.
Mary Bryant was in the group of the first convicts (and the only female convict) to ever escape from the Australian shores. Mary escaped from a penal colony which often is a remote place to escape from and is a place for prisoners to be separated. The fact that Bryant escaped from Australia suggests that she was a very courageous person, this was a trait most convicts seemed to loose once they were sentenced to transportation. This made her unique using the convicts.
Just like this campaign for safe cosmetics its purpose has been to aware women, parents, workers and everyone who is affected by this problem of what big corporations are putting in the products we think are non-harmful. The title itself Chemicals in Beauty Products: The Story of Cosmetics is automatically supposed to draw women’s attention because of the words “chemicals” and “cosmetics”. Since this film was originally put on The Story of Stuff, a website for a variety of campaigns, we can assume this film was made for people who care and want to change the world to make it healthier. In addition, it also targets women who are interested in what they are putting on their bodies. Interesting enough, this video was released the same time the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 was introduced for the purpose of pursuing women, workers, and everyone affected by this chemical problem, to push congress even more to enforce this cosmetic act to be passed. The underlying purpose the producers of the film wanted from its viewers was to have them help get congress to ban all corporations from using hazardous chemicals in beauty products. Some strategies used to help their goal was to use logos and pathos to help evoke its audience to ultimately help put a stop to this problem once and for
Mary Kay Ash worked hard her entire live. When she was only seven years old, her father came home from the institution he had been staying at since he had contracted tuberculosis. She was the youngest of four children, but ended up taking care of her father so her mother could continue working. She had to go to school, clean the house and cook dinner, which left her with little time to be an average seven-year old. She would talk to her mother every day on the phone to get instructions on how to cook dinner and her mother always took the time to answer any questions she might have. "You can do it!" her mother would say. (Ash, Mary Kay 10) It was these words that became the motto of the Mary Kay Cosmetics Corporation.
In the industry of cosmetology, there have been women that have played an important role. Like Sarah Breedlove, who later became known as Madam C.J. Walker was America’s first African American female millionaire. She was born poor and orphaned, but later built her own business of manufacturing hair products. A scalp infection led her to the creation of her products. Like many women, she struggled to find the solution to her problem, after she tried thousands of products, soon she started losing her hair.
Based on the information provided in the L’Oreal case, Yue Sai struggled to grow and capture additional sales in the high-end Chinese cosmetics sector. In the past, L’Oreal attempted to position Yue Sai in several different ways which can be viewed as detrimental to the company image, showing uncertainty as the company struggles to see which positioning strategy will stick. The most recent positioning presented in the case, which desires to “deliver Yue Sai’s longstanding brand promise that ‘Nobody knows Chinese skin better than Yue Sai’”, allows the highest probability of success for the company capitalizing on countless fresh trends in Chinese cosmetics (6). The positioning statement would reflect this new strategy: “For the modern Chinese woman Yue Sai offers a line of high-end cosmetics. Unlike other high-end cosmetics Yue Sai combines traditional Chinese medicine and sophisticated technology adapted to the unique skin type of Chinese women.” Yue Sai saw reasonable success and hope in the new Vital Essential line which utilized traditional Chinese medicine and, therefore, resulted in above average repeat purchases. Continuing to focus the strategy around traditional Chinese medicine should benefit Yue Sai considerably. Another suggested strategy would be to wholly reposition Yue Sai, however this is ill advised. As stated in the case, Yue Sai tried numerous different positioning strategies, which ultimately provided no clear path strategy. Repositioning would show uncertainty in the company, lowering brand value in the eyes of the consumer.

According to the textbook case study, the main reason is due to the market in the United States for cosmetics are very mature, not to mention extremely competitive. Because of this, Avon made the decision to put its emphasis – and resources – in less-competitive markets. (Daniels, 2010)
After studying the cosmetic market we can identify a series of needs in this market:
Beauty product can be defined as cosmetics; materials and devices made and sold for the purpose of enhancing the physical attractiveness of users or in other words, as any product, especially a cream or lotion, intended to improve a person's appearance . We live in society where people nowadays are very obsessed with beauty and spending so much money on beauty products. Since we were children, the society taught us that beauty is happiness, wellness and everything. This creates a mindset that only attractive physical appearance is beauty, even though ‘beauty’ is a very subjective word where it can apply to many things. It is a rare sight these days to
