A cover song is when one artist records another artists already made famous song, and in many cases puts their own twist on it. Within the past decade, with technological advancements being made in society, cover songs have become very common. He wants us to know that just because someone cover songs and it goes to their album does not make them less legitimate. Don Cusic is an author who wrote plenty of books. He typically wrote on songwriters and music. He also has succeeded in writing and he focuses on country music. Cover songs are songs that someone has sung, but they did not write it themselves. In 1962 Robert Hayden wrote a collection of poems entitled Ballads of Remembrance. This collection is comprised of 36 poems that are separated into 4 groups. Each group refers to a different focus of remembrance; for example, one group focuses on the struggle of African Americans in terms of finding identity and a sense of transcendence. As a child Dylan was comfortable being the center of attention, often writing creative poetry for his mother and on occasion singing. Dylan had no formal music lessons, but none the less he began to compose. Later at age 14, he took up the guitar and shortly after formed a band, one of many he played the guitar in. Always plunging ahead, performing to his up most potentional, Dylan absorbed his surroundings as a source of inspiration. Even during his early efforts Dylan responded very positivly to mainstream musicians, such as country star Hank Williams. Yet, he responded especially well to early rock stars such as Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. In the summer of 1959, after graduation Dylan began to work at a cafe, where he began to pay increasing attention to folksingers such as Judy Collins and Jesse Fuller. Finding an instant connection with their songs, songs relevant to social issues. Dylan was drawn into both the musical style and the social message of these indivisuals.
For this week’s assignment, we are asked to look for a song that is inspired by an older song. It can sound like it, or it can borrow lyrics from it. After I read the assignment and understood what is being asked from us, I then jumped in the opportunity to research about it. I never realized that most hits nowadays are derived from old songs, it’s actually amazing. According to Steve Jobs (1994) “Good Artists copy, Great artists steal”, this quote applies to most music nowadays. I don’t live by that quote but I believe that he just pointed out the obvious with what he said.
Everyone has their own definition of the word dream. The meaning of dream to me is being indubitable or passionate about what it is that I would like to do. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, two of the definitions of dream is, “a strong desired goal or purpose,” and “something that fully satisfies a wish.” “Sonny’s Blues” is a story about two brothers who has took their own direction in life, but also trying to find the meaning of their lives. The short story “Sonny’s Blues” and the musician Ray Charles chart the lives of aspiring musicians facing distractions of poverty and family difficulties as they try to reach their impossible dreams.
First, I would like to explain why I believe that cover songs are now a good thing. “Behind Blue Eyes” covered by Limp Bizkit is a song that I would have never heard had it not been covered. The Who originally recorded this song in 1971. Limp Bizkit is an alternative band that many younger people have great interest in. Many people my age are not as interested in what is now called “Classic Rock” as they are in alternative music. Therefore, this song would have never been heard if it wasn’t for Limp Bizkit. Another good example of a song that has been covered is “Simple Man” by Shinedown. This song was originally recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1973. This is another example of a song that younger generations would not have heard if it wasn’t covered by Shinedown. However, a person may ask “Is it fair for the original artist if one of their songs is covered?” I believe the answer to this question is yes. Many artists that have covered songs have also had their songs covered. This causes a never-ending loop of music that seeks different genres of music and also people of different ages.
Every day we encounter a lot of music as we go about our lives, whether we're listening to the radio, watching a film, shopping or going to lunch, we are constantly surrounded by music. All of this music has to be licensed, meaning musicians can make money by earning royalties from their recorded music.
The art of music can be described as a medium that can both physically and emotionally move people. All artists strive to be creative and stand out from the crowd; but when the majority of pop music is composed of four chords, where is the originality? G-E(minor)-C-D and A(minor)-C-D-F are the most common chord progressions and the only factors that change between the thousands of songs that use these progressions are the strumming pattern and the lyrics. However, the skills of the lyricist and composer who successfully produced these songs take a backseat to the singer. The audience robs them of their much due credit with their applause and idolizing. Music Copyright is a very important aspect of the music industry. The Copyright law was established to preserve the creativity and rights of authors, composers, performers of expression. Copyright is the law that protects the property rights of the creator of an original work in a fixed tangible medium. Copyright can be seen every where in the music industry. Many music artist of our culture today have been involved in copyright issues. Recently, on MTV news it was stated that, "As the music industry becomes increasingly concerned about protecting the integrity of artists copyrights in the age of MP3. Prince has now filed a motion in New York federal court aimed at shutting down several websites offering free downloads of the Artist's songs." Another artist claimed that the Reznor had stolen material for his last album." One of the biggest issues that arises with remix art is the issue of ‘Remix vs. Plagiarism.” When does a remixed work become an original work of art? Is the work considered original as soon as it is tweaked or when it is unrecognizable? Neither, a work is unique when its purpose and meaning transcends that of the original? Works like Montgomery Lee’s “Copyright Symphony” takes a variety of images and uses them to create music out of the imbedded data on the photographs. The work can be considered his own because he had given the images new meaning by placing them together. And by turning the photos into music they are no longer photographs, instead they are musical instruments which together create something completely original.
Whether referring to a poem, a situation or someone in particular, we as a society are told not to judge a book by its cover, not to judge someone until getting to know him or her, or without discovering the underlying message. In Dionne Brand’s, Blues Spiritual for Mammy Prater and Margaret Atwood’s, This Is a Photograph of Me, both texts must be looked at in-depth before jumping to any conclusions. Both authors incorporate photography to paint a picture for their readers. By doing so, Brand defines slavery through an artistic perspective and signifies aspects of time, physical appearance and her outlook on life, which gives life to the aftermath of an ex-slave. In contrast with this, Atwood incorporates the same three aspects into her work and as a result, both text are much alike than originally thought.
