I can’t recall how many times we’ve trekked up the mountain which neighbors my home. The only memories I can conjure are of the monotony, how each step was mechanical and perfectly rehearsed. There was never any curiosity or marvel during the climb – only the wooden handrail running along the boardwalk, and every time we reached the mountain’s peak, I failed to feel like I’d surmounted anything. Like the view at the summit, my life and the mentality that I faced it with gradually lost its color. Regardless, the mountain was not entirely devoid of inspiration. Sometimes as we hiked upwards, my senses would be struck by a brief glimpse of the blue sea shining through the needles of the pine trees, or the whisper of the waves wafting up from the edges of the rocky cliffs. However, no matter how tantalized I was to pursue these snapshots, I could never liberate myself from the safety and familiarity of the boardwalk; each time, I accepted certainty in wonder’s stead and followed convention, disregarding the fact that I only felt secure because of my self-imposed confinement. Every step was rugged and unique; every turn was a surprise, an adventure. I blazed my own trail which no one could follow, sweeping from the edge of the hill where at last I could drink in the endless sights of the shining blue sea to the deep corners of the rock where clusters of wild flowers bloomed. I followed the call of my heart, finally reclaiming the mountain’s organic beauty. The common expanse of horizon at the top, unchanging from eye to eye, was no longer of importance. I had captured the views that beckoned me the most, views that no one else could ever behold because they were reflections of myself. In this newfound freedom, I found treasures which I alone could
