The Friday after Thanksgiving is everything from a bargain hunter’s dream come true to a husband’s worst nightmare. Since the early to mid-sixties it was been given the name “Black Friday.” Black Friday is day where stores around the country open their doors early to welcome the start of the Christmas shopping season. This is the day if you get to the mall by five a.m., you are late and will not find a parking place. It is the same day where you start off by being cussed by a pregnant woman, and end by being beat-up by an elderly lady resembling your grandmother. Much is to be said for the day, and for those whom brave mess.
The name “Black Friday” comes from Philadelphia in the mid 1960’s. It was given two meanings. The first meaning was developed as a joke by the shoppers quoting it to be “the day that brought the stores whose sales were in the red up into the black,” thus giving us the name Black Friday. The less obvious origin of the name came from the Philadelphia P.D., and was used to describe the major traffic jams both in the streets, and on the sidewalks. Since it grew to become a popular informal holiday sometime near 2000, it has become much more commercialized. Stores have started opening as early as twelve o’clock in the morning, although the average store opens at five. They offer such deals as “door busters,” which are deals for the first allotted number of customers to “bust” through their doors or an allotted period of time. Now, you may even buy a car with a promise of the lowest possible of the year, as so the companies say once a month. In 2008, despite the recession of our economy, an estimated 142 million people showed up for the great deals. Only 122 million, however, showed up to voted in t...

... of the smaller women started crawling underneath and rushing the store. Bras and panties were literally flying as the women searched for their size. The store became like a mosh pit at a rock concert. By 7am when I left I passed by Victoria Secret again to see if anything had changed. Panties and bra were covering the floor, there was no organization left at all and workers there looked ill. I left that day with saggy eyes and a few new acquaintances whom happened to be lonely boyfriends like myself.
The Black Friday crowd is one of many colors, personalities, shapes, ages, sex, and status. Many other miscellaneous personalities were lurking early that Friday morning. I tried to find the most interesting and social groups of the crowd. I would not advise any one person to experience this tragic display of social life. Have a nice Black and Blue Friday.
“Frederick’s of Hollywood, brainchild of the inventor of the push-up bra and purveyor of “marry-a-millionaire” lingerie since 1947” (Blakemore, 2015). Frederick’s created the “sex sells” image for themselves especially marrying a millionaire. They cannot go back from this and just try to reinvent themselves to cater to the everyday women when the company was built from these products. Frederick’s of Hollywood’s catalogs have most of the women in bed in the most uncomfortable position in the most uncomfortable looking lingerie. Victoria’s Secret catalogs are on a beachy location or just on location, not just a set. “That is, demureness is sexy in a middle-class setting and directness is sexy in a working-class setting.” (Blakemore, 2015). The catalogs create the ambiance of where the girls are when they are wearing the lingerie, therefore, it makes us the people shopping from these catalogs feel like we need to be in that place or atmosphere to wear what they are
It is seen in everything from the hoarding of material objects to the destruction of friendships, both of which are popular themes when regarding the topic of Black Friday shopping. Black Friday has become Black Thursday, a trend which has only shown up within the last decade. The great American holiday that is Thanksgiving is celebrated because of our gratefulness toward all that we have, a holiday that is meant to be spent gathered around a table of our loved ones. However, the retail holiday that consumes the day afterward has begun to overflow into our gatherings, and it is due to the greed of the American people. Were it not for the market’s demand for earlier sales, stores would not open their sales on Thursday nights. Everyone would simply wait until early the next morning to start off on their shopping extravaganzas, and the sales themselves would likely be far less violent as
There have been many financial corruptions and scandals though out history and in 1869 one such scandal rock The United States financial institute’s foundation. The attempt to corner the gold market lead to the preverbal straw which almost broke the camel’s back. This scandal has become to be known as Black Friday, not to be confused with the Friday following Thanksgiving this Black Friday proved that without oversight of the market it could quickly become a market of the few.
The movie Friday was one of the best comedies I have ever seen. It had a great director, a talented cast, a good plot, a spectacular soundtrack, and is filled with funny gags and jokes. It was by far the most hilarious movie of the decade. I have never laughed so hard in all of my life. I loved this movie.
...escribes Jeffries business savvy skills saying; “If history is any indication, Jeffries won’t let anyone — “girlcotting” high school feminists, humourless Asians, angry shareholders, thong-hating parents, lawsuit-happy minorities, nosy journalists, copycat competitors or uptight moralists — get in his way.” Another important issue that was addressed in the Business Report article is the fact that A&F only carries larger sizes in the men’s clothing because athletes are expected to buy A&F clothes however in the women’s clothing lines sizes are smaller and do not carry to larger sized females. “He doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people,” Lewis said. “He doesn’t want his core customers to see people who aren’t as hot as them wearing his clothing. People who wear his clothing should feel like they’re one of the ‘cool kids.’”
Thanksgiving Day is a day of family, food, and giving thanks for the blessings in life and yet some people believe Thanksgiving to be a prep day for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. The focus of Thanksgiving shifted from family bonding to incessant shopping. This trend of taking away from the hours of Thanksgiving in order to shop is enraging. It steals away from family time for the shoppers and the employees. Employers threaten workers that if they do not work on that certain holiday, they will be fired. Black Friday should be kept to Friday instead of moving in on my family time. The whole culture of Black Friday has become repugnant and unnecessary.
Black Press Day, other wise none as Freedom’s Journal was the anniversary of the founding of the first black newspaper in the US and was established the same year that slavery was abolished in New York State. It changed African Americans forever or colored people.
Imagine having to work on thanksgiving. Not only do those people miss out on Black Friday, but also miss out on time with your family. They also get to go to work more than likely sleep deprived, deal with unpleasant customers, and constant lines. Curtis West worked as a Macy’s employee. In his 24 years of work for them he had to work a total of 19 Black Fridays. He said it wasn’t bad when Black Friday started off, because it usually meant going in at 5 am on Friday. Now for sto...
Starting the day right after Thanksgiving, everybody’s mind is set on one thing: Shopping. People young and old wake up early in the morning to start their holiday shopping. Everyone is looking for the perfect gift for their family and friends. But nobody cares to think of what the employees at their favorite stores think and feel. Shoppers just come inside and turn the store upside down.
Les Wexner rapidly expanded on the national attention Victoria's Secret had been receiving by opening over 400 stores by 1990 and currently operates approximately 950 stores nationwide. While Victoria's Secret is known for its lingerie sales, it has successfully launched a beauty division and also carries brands like Betsy Johnson, Dolce & Gabbana and Intimissimi, an affordable Italian brand. Victoria's Secret Direct, the catalog division of the company, continues to see growth as sales reached $870 million in 2005, but the star is still it's retail stores. Yearly sales for Victoria's Secret stores topped $2.6 billion dollars in 2005 and our store on Powell Street recently surpassed the $10 million dollar mark in sales for 2006, making it the 13th store in the company based on volume. Black Wednesday was used to refer to a day of widespread air traffic snarls in 1954 as well as the day the British government was forced to withdraw a battered pound from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992. Black Thursday has variously been used for days of devastating brush fires, bombings and athletic defeats, among other unpleasantness. (The New York Times.)
Holidays have always been known to affect our consumer culture for many years, but how it all began eludes many people and very few studies have been completed on it. Even though some say that the subject is too broad to precisely identify how holidays, especially Christmas, directly affect our market, I have found that people’s values, expectations and rituals related to holidays can cause an excessive amount of spending among our society. Most people are unaware that over the centuries holidays have become such a profitable time of year for industries that they now starting to promote gift ideas on an average of a month and a half ahead of actual holiday dates to meet consumer demands.
The stores are tying to crack down on shoplifters by making the punishments as strict as possible. Shoplifting effects the community in a big way. The stores get about three cents per every dollar purchased for an item. So if you figure that they don't make a whole lot of money out of profit. Every shoplifter that takes a product also is taking the product, which costs money by the store so that is also a set back and puts them more in debt. Some stores might even close down because of shoplifters making the store go bankrupt.
Ordinarily, people witness vulgar acts and retaliate accordingly. While shopping on Black Friday, it is not uncommon to watch someone steal something out of someone else’s cart, causing an unruly argument in the store, or witness someone flipping another person off while driving down the
Holiday shopping, for me, is a nightmare because of the abundance of crowds, all of the fighting and competitiveness. I believe those last minute shoppers are the worst, they are the ones that are rude and impatient. For some people, with lots of patience, dealing with holiday shoppers is a good experience. For people like me, who has very little patience, it is a dreadful experience. Another aspect of shopping during the holidays is dealing with tired, overworked and frustrated employees. They are just trying to get their jobs done as quickly as possible, so they can go home to their families. Meanwhile, you have those employees that are cheerful and are eager to help the distraught shoppers. Also, during the holidays horrible accidents can occur often at this time of year. I am going to portray the dangers and mishaps that can occur during the holidays. I am not anti-holiday, but the older I get the more I don't have any desire to be exposed to all of the potential chaos.
