The Black Lives Matter Global Network is a chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. Their mission is to raise awareness of the inequities that black people face. Many people argue that through the Black Lives Matter movement, they are actually perpetuating racism and marginalization. However, I think that the Black Lives Matter movement gives a voice to people who normally would not have one. The Black Lives Matter movement is expansive. It is made of a collective of liberators who believe in an inclusive and spacious movement. They also believe that in order to win and bring as many people with them along the way, they must move beyond the narrow nationalism that is all too prevalent in Black communities. They must ensure they are building a movement that brings all of black people to the front. Through the movement, they affirm the lives of Black people, queer and trans people, disabled people, undocumented people, people with records, women, and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. Their network centers those who have been marginalized within black liberation movements. They are working for a world where black lives are no longer systematically …show more content…
Most of the time black people are seen as having less and being less. They are seen as being less worthy and not mattering. This movement exists to make people learn that they do. It is based in non-violence. It promotes equality and equity and not hate. It does not work to state that any one group is better than any other but that all groups deserve respect and recognition. Especially in a group that has been oppressed for so long, black people need and deserve this movement to affirm their worth in a society that doesn’t believe they are
The Black Lives Matter Movement was started as a hash tag after the death of Travon Marten. Its founders Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza helped it grow into a movement. Unlike the Black Panther Party of the 1960s this group is not calling for the black community to pick up arms. However, like the Black Panther Party of the 1960’s the media has shown members of this group standing toe to toe with
This movement is about the equality of African Americans and saying that their lives matter just as much as other races who get more rights and freedom. This movement has gone on since the time of Martin Luther King Jr. In society, African Americans are lesser than whites and are given less rights, but in the Black Lives Matter movement, not only African Americans, but also many other races are going against what society says and protesting for rights from which they deserve. This relates to the idea of going against society and making your own decisions which relates to Transcendentalism.
Black lives matter is a social media movement that went of the Ferguson, Gardner cases etc. Also very rapidly it was to show as a opposition to the police and cops. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. I feel that the person that made black life’s matter didn’t mean for it to be just all about black life but to inform others around the nation that there is a special problem that is only happening in the African American community and we have fix that issue . we as a society has to recognize this that the African American are not making this up this its not something being politicalized its real and there’s a history behind it so we have to seriously.
There are people in America that makes us wonder why there is a world to begin with. There are people who represent the greater good of the world, and there are others who are unfortunately not for the greater good of the world. We have to constantly deal with those whose only goal in life is to bring the lives of others down to the ground; to shatter and to break them. This is what is happening now in the world, and this most likely will never change. As a result of trying to change the ways in which we live and interact with these people, there was a movement that wanted to change the lives of African-Americans, as well as other races. This movement was called “Black Lives Matter”. The people who were responsible for the creation of
Many celebrities and black communities are involved in this movement. Celebrities use this platform to bring awareness to the senseless act of police brutality. A famous rapper TGT asked the question, “I got my hand up now what else am I supposed to do” in connection to Michael brown who was shot with his hands up (Game, Curren$y and TGT). Police officers are supposed to shoot people who threatens them. He mentioned this verse in his song to highlight the fact that Michael could not have made that cop feel threatened with his hands up. What the Black Lives Matter activist is doing is so great and necessary. There needs to be a group that can make sure incidents like these do not go unnoticed. Since this movement has the contributions of celebrities, that’s exactly what happens. Although it is sad, these types of tragedies bring people together. When people come together, it forces change to happen or at least an
One misconception of this movement is that it is a movement that says Black lives matter more than others. While this is not true, a large amount of people strongly agree with that statement. However, most of the people that disagree with this movement disagree because they are color-blind to the racism in the society. In actuality, according to Blacklivesmatter.com, “#BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes.” The BLM movement is not just about the killings of Black people it is about all the injustices all African Americans face. For example, when an African American walks through a parking lot there is an immediate reaction to make sure the car is locked because unconsciously people view African Americans as dangerous and scary. When a white person walks through a parking lot there is not the same reaction as there is for an African American. The BLM movement wants to eradicate the subtle color-blind racism as well as the blatant racism that is being displayed in the media. Another large misconception of the Black Lives Matter is that the people that are a part of the BLM movement do not care or consider black-on-black crime. The people that are a part of the BLM movement realize that there is a crime problem among black people; however, they do not believe that Black people are more violent than other races. The BLM movement says that because African Americans are in poorer communities compared to white people they are more susceptible to be targeted by police and arrested more often than
It shows to others that racism is still present • It brings the unity that was lacking among Black communities • It gives young persons (especially) an "idea" of what the Civil Rights movement was like in the 1960s • It gives young black persons something to fight for • It allows black persons to want to make a difference in their community • It makes the rest of the world more aware of the "bias" police system in the United States. A lot of celebrities are showing their support for the movement (Janelle Monae, Beyoncé, Rick Ross, Lauryn Hill, etc.).
Black Lives Matter is not a bandwagon to hop on, nor is it a hashtag or a slogan. Black Lives Matter is a movement. To not support the movement or to think that the movement does not need support is outright depraved, demeaning and degrading. We too often think that retweeting, tweeting or sharing a photo on social media is supporting the movement and it’s not! This is no longer the 1960’s. We have gained our rights: that is no longer the fight. The fight is receiving justice for our black people, so no effective protesting is no longer sitting at countertops, it is no longer peaceful marching and it is no longer bus boycotting The new protest is to educate ourselves, to show respect, to get involved in the justice system, to raise black lawyers, to vote and to do jury duty. All of these things are needed to benefit the movement in stopping the corruptness in our justice system.
“Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a movement against police violence that is, as argued by BLM supporters, disproportionately and systematically directed at black people. The movement has highlighted incidents in which police have harassed and killed black men and women. BLM is considered one of the most visible and controversial civil rights movement of the last decades.” (Black Lives Matter. 2016) “Black Lives Matter is an American social activist organization devoted to stopping violence and injustice against African Americans. The group was founded in 2013 following the acquittal of In the sixties African Americans began a Civil Rights Movement that, to some, still continue today; hence, the Black Lives Matter movement. During the sixties, the
First off Black Lives Matter is a powerful organization that has gained national attention. The movement was started in 2012, after the death of seventeen year Trayvon Martin. A very controversial trial came about, against a police officer named George Zimmerman who had shot the young black man. The main goal of black lives matter is to prevent
If the lives of the mistreated blacks truly matter, the people that want to change the way things happen they would reach out in a peaceful way and engage others. Instead of acting out with violence and hatred. Overall, the movement should come together as one and actively speak against the "unjust" and "wrong doing ". All across the news and social media it has been mentioned and showed many times how the Black Lives Matter movement protests turn into violent outburst, in which many times harm those black lives that they are trying to protect and support. Instead of making matters worse there should be a plan to defeat the difficulties peacefully and correct the ignorance with a powerful but sympathetic stance. The only way one can truly start change is within themselves; people cannot expect others to help or see your vision of a better [equal] world. If all results seen from performances are malice and bitterness towards the
That is why my family is advocate for black lives matter. There is too much stuff going on in today’s society especially towards black people. So I chose to a visual text for black lives matter.Black lives matter is a movement which purpose is to bring black people together. So that we can stand united. What I mean by stand united is that black people need to support each other to break away from stereotypes. It’s focused on black people being liberated from all the unnecessary hardships from people in positions of power. So the group was made to make a
Why do Black Lives Matter as opposed to All Lives Matter? When a person thinks about Black Lives Matter, he or she may visualize African Americans fighting for justice and equality. The movement Black Lives Matter was created to bring awareness to the systematic racism, police brutality and social injustice that African Americans face on a daily basis. In contrast, All Lives Matter downplays the fact that black people are looked down upon in society. All Lives Matter may seem like an innocent title, but it emphasizes that justice for black people is not necessary.
Starting as just a hashtag on a known social media app, evolved into a mass social movement we now know as the black lives matter movement. The black lives matter movement is a long movement that started shortly after the death of Trayvon Martin, a 17yr old black teenager who was unarmed and killed at scene by a man that went by the name of George Zimmerman. In response to his death, the boy in the hoodie, led to the creation of the famous and popular hashtag #blacklivesmatter as well as other co-occurring hashtags following the deaths of other African American males. Social media became a platform to help bring light to the issues that are a rising concern to African American citizens in the United States. Moreover, as a result to the death
The Black Power Movement has long been demonized, it is arguably one of the most demonized yet misunderstood movements within white America if not the most. The Movement is often dubbed as the “evil twin” of the Civil Rights Movement or is simplified as a “racist” and male dominated organization. These simplifications neglect the community based programs for black empowerment that were at the core of the movement’s mission. What many forget is the movement was birthed to elevate the political, social, and economic status of Blacks. As Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panther Party puts it: “Revolution is about the need to re-evolve political, economic and social justice and power back into the hands of the people, preferably through legislation
