The Black Lives Matter Global Network is a chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. Their mission is to raise awareness of the inequities that black people face. Many people argue that through the Black Lives Matter movement, they are actually perpetuating racism and marginalization. However, I think that the Black Lives Matter movement gives a voice to people who normally would not have one. The Black Lives Matter movement is expansive. It is made of a collective of liberators who believe in an inclusive and spacious movement. They also believe that in order to win and bring as many people with them along the way, they must move beyond the narrow nationalism that is all too prevalent in Black communities. They must ensure they are building a movement that brings all of black people to the front. Through the movement, they affirm the lives of Black people, queer and trans people, disabled people, undocumented people, people with records, women, and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. Most of the time black people are seen as having less and being less. They are seen as being less worthy and not mattering. This movement exists to make people learn that they do. It is based in non-violence. It promotes equality and equity and not hate. It does not work to state that any one group is better than any other but that all groups deserve respect and recognition. Especially in a group that has been oppressed for so long, black people need and deserve this movement to affirm their worth in a society that doesn’t believe they are
