Darkness all around. Like an infinite black hole. Only flashes of light from fish. So much pressure, it feels like you are being squeezed into a ball. That’s what it would be like to live in the deep dark depths of the Pelagic zone, so fish make big adaptations to be able to live down there. One quick definition everyone should know is ecosystem. Ecosystem means all of the living things (plants and animals) and nonliving things that live in a specific area and interact with each other. The Pelagic zone has deeper water and the deeper down you go, the colder it gets and the more pressure there is. When it gets deep into the Pelagic zone it gets very dark so lots of animals have bioluminescence which basically means they can make their own light. …show more content…
Above all, a big environmental threat to the Black Dragonfish is pollution. The text states, “Approximately 6.4 million tons of of plastic and other debris enter the ocean each year” (Dignan 13). This demonstrates that pollution is an environmental threat to the Black Dragonfish because if the heavier debris sinks down, the Black Dragonfish could eat it and choke viciously and die. Although, another environmental threat is climate change. According to the text, “Warming ocean waters, rising sea levels, and violent storms disrupt the lives of many species and affect fragile marine ecosystems” (Dignan 14). This obviously shows that climate change is an environmental threat to the Black Dragonfish since it’s used to living in the deep, cold water and if the water warms up, it won’t be used to the temperature and it could die. Even so, the final environmental threat the Black Dragonfish faces is ocean acidification. The text clearly states, “Ocean acidification also decreases the ability of many organisms to build shells and skeletons. It disrupts food chains and affects the reproduction and health of many species” (Dignan 15). Clearly, this shows that ocean acidification is an environmental threat to the Black Dragonfish because if any of those things happen to it like it disrupts the food chain or it affects the health of many
The documentary Blackfish by Gabriela Cowperthwaite is a gripping documentary about orca whales in captivity at SeaWorld and other sea parks around the world that shows the disturbing effects that can be caused from having these animals in a place where they shouldn’t be.
There’s No Real Good Guy In the movie, “Blackfish” we are exposed to the fact that the way orcas are treated at SeaWorld is worse than we are lead to believe. We see how they are forced to swim in tiny pools and how they can only be fed if they preform well. After seeing this it makes you feel like the only way to help these poor creatures is to jump on the animal activist wagon and to free all the whales like in “Free Willy”. But is that really the right way to go?
The Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is an invasive saltwater predator that is increasing exponentially in the tropics of the western Atlantic (Benkwitt, 2013). The Lionfish invasion is causing a dramatic decline in native marine reef species due the gluttony of the lionfish.

An English naturalist Charles Darwin (1802-1882) developed a theory of biological evolution. He studied variation in plants and animals during his five years’ voyage around the world in the 19th century. Darwin studied hundreds of species, which he researches variations between locations. His theory states that all species of organism arise and develop through natural selection. Natural selection is the process of organisms that adapt to their surrounding environment, which tend to survive and produce more offspring. Killer whales are remarked to have evolutionary links from land dwelling organisms, millions of years ago. This paper will display the evolution and natural selection of the killer whale.
In The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister tells how a beautiful, extraordinary, yet, self-centered blue fish learns that being beautiful isn’t the key to happiness. The blue fish came to find this lesson when he lost his friends. Pfister takes a simple ocean setting and explores the consequences of an individual’s arrogance toward their peers, the process of humbling of oneself, and the tremendous reward one feels when they learn to share. The story achieves these morals by the author’s use of detailed imager and also, the influence of minor characters on the antihero in order to reveal to the audience the true thematic message; selfish actions bring true happiness.
A statistic released by the Marine Science Education Project of the Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education States that “…Reefs subject to land-based pollution (sewage, sedimentation, and or industrial pollution) show 30–50% reduced diversity at 3 m, and 40–60% reduced diversity at 10 m depth relative to unpolluted comparison reefs in each region.” This statistic is alarming because it shows just how much pollution can affect a certain environment. Not only does it affect the environment but it also affects animals, plants and people.
In Chinese tradition, Shark fin soup is called as “a celebration soup”, which people eat it to celebrate in various occasions. Moreover, people also believed that shark fin consisted of diverse nutrition values which provide them virility, wealth, and power(Wolchover, 2011). These beliefs lead to the beginning of poaching for sharks, the top of food chain in the sea world. Surprisingly, although people are aware of the decreasing number of sharks since the old days, around hundred million of sharks are still hunted each year(Heltus, 2013), to be served on luxury tables surrounded by those believers in things that they do not even prove whether the belief is reliable. Therefore, in the generation that people are mostly educated, sharks should no longer have to be continuously killed for their fins.
A documentary is an informative film that aims to position readers to accept one version of the events or topics expressed. All documentaries posses the ability biased and present an altered version of reality to persuade audience positioning. ‘Blackfish’ is a captivating and inspired documentary released in 2013 concerning the inhumane captivity and domestication of Orcas at SeaWorld for pecuniary advantage. The film, directed by Gabriella Cowperthwaite positions viewers to adopt a dominant reading position on the topic of whale subjugation. The documentary utilises techniques such as expert verification, emotive language and the humanisation of whales to position dominant viewers to accept the ideology that captivity is deleterious
A big change that has occurred in the oceans all over the world is the Coral Reefs are dying and are predicted to be dead by the end of the century due to the rising acidity of the oceans caused by many different threats to marine ecosystems. Coral reefs cover less than 0.2% of our oceans but they contain 25% of the world’s marine fish species according to Endangered: Biodiversity on the brink, 2010: pg.45). If this is the case that means by the time the end of the century comes around we will have lost close to 25% of the worlds marine ecosystems.
The leading natural cause of destruction among the coral reefs is global warming. Global warming causes the bleaching of coral reefs to occur. Bleaching is a response to stress by the coral reef that happens when the water becomes to warm. The coral then put out a brownish zooxanthelle which causes them to lose their color. Without the zooxanthelle, the corals cannot provide nourishment for itself and th...
Varanus komodoensis or Komodo dragon by Jeremiah Murphy Did you know that komodo dragons are the largest reptiles in the world? Did you know that Komodo Dragons Have venom sacks? did you also know that Komodo dragons are cannibalistic? If you are interested about these animals and want to learn more about the Komodo dragon, Where it lives, its habitat, and why they are vulnerable.
By the oceans being polluted not only are animals affected humans are too. What some people don't know is that they are killing of and disturbing offspring by polluting waters. "Ocean pollution results in smaller catches of fish all over the world, either by killing fish directly, preventing them from breeding, or causing birth abnormalities. Seabirds are unable to breed and whales are poisoned. Pollution also seems to be responsible for a new disease among seals. Without even swallowed, plastic can kill seabirds, turtles, and other creatures by trapping them. People drinking water from polluted seas can become sick. Deadly infectious diseases like cholera and typhoid can break out." There are many different types of sizes of plankton everywhere in our ocean waters.
Water pollution is also a major thing in the world because almost 60% of it is fishes. It occurs due to several factors; the industrial waste dumped into the rivers and other water body’s cause am imbalance in the water leading to its severe contamination and deaths. And the infamous Global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases particularly CO2 is leading to global warming.
Introduction One particularly interesting sea creature is the whale shark, formally known as Rhincondon typus; it was first discovered in 1828 by Andrew Smith (Rowat 2012). This large fish is found globally in warm tropical oceans and prefers to stay within 200 meters of the ocean’s surface in waters ranging from 4.2 to 28.7 degrees Celsius (Stevens 2006). This creature can be found all across the globe in warm tropical seas. Aggregations of whale sharks have been seen off the coast of Australia at times, although it is primarily a creature of solitude. Whale sharks are filter feeders that consume plankton as well as small fish and are harmless to humans.
