Black America V. The Cruel World: The Journey to Conquering the Dream
For many years, whites Americans treated African Americans and other minorities as if they were inferior to white civilians. Those who attempted to take a stand against this treatment were often thwarted in their attempts. To create a compromise for this treatment, the Supreme Court created the Separate but Equal Policy of 1896. However, this just further discriminated against people of color in America. The acts of many civil rights’ activists and the Plessy v. Ferguson case helped to show the inequality caused by this policy and would lead to the nullification of Segregation.

After the American Civil, the 14th amendment was made to proclaim that Africans Americans were to receive equal protection under the law and all other rights blessed by the American Constitution. It also proclaims about “due process.” Due process prohibits any civilian from having their “life, liberty, or property” taken away from them illegally (Primary Documents in America History). The Supreme Court used the 14th amendment to find what they saw as justice in the Separate but Equal policy. Although transportation in Montgomery was liberated, transportation in many other states was yet to face the same fate. But the fight for the desegregation of transportation in all states wasn’t over either. African Americans, minorities and any who sought to end segregation participated in what is known as the Freedom Rides. Freedom Rides were the acts of civil rights advocates who rode interstate buses into segregated southern states to challenge the American government and law enforcement. Some riders were known to sit enter into racially segregated facilities and attempt to partake in the same activities as white Americans. So in a sense, the Freedom riders did it all. These acts were not always met with thanks and praise. In fact it was quite the opposite. In just the first few days of this protest, the Freedom Riders, as these protesters were called, were met with [hostile] welcoming by southerners. It should be noted that within these first few days the riders were severely beaten. Some buses that Freedom Riders rode were burned. There is one case where not even two blocks away from the police station, a group of racist white Americans banded together and assaulted the riders.In South Carolina, Freedom Riders were attacked and the vehicle in which they rode was burned.
