Although my background is in Biomedical Sciences, I believe that health promotion is a more advantageous solution to improving long-term public health issues compared to medical treatment. I initially pursued my studies in health through Biomedical Sciences, where I learned how infectious diseases occur at the molecular level. However, my curiosity was not satisfied, and I began taking courses in Health Sciences such as Determinants of Health, History of Health Care, Global Citizenship and Health, Epidemiology, Canadian Health Fieldwork. With Determinants of Health and History of Health Care, I learned about the social determinants of health from the Canadian perspective as well as how Medicare was initially proposed by Tommy Douglas and is …show more content…
For the CHAP - Cardiovascular Health Awareness Project, I was able to help with initial data-entry into a Microsoft Excel database as well as double-checking data entered. After graduating from Biomedical Science and Health Science, I began working at a medical clinic to increase my knowledge of the healthcare system. I encountered numerous cases where individuals expressed their challenges and difficulties in accessing proper healthcare. For example, homeless patients without a family doctor requiring controlled medications had difficulties seeing a physician due to the nature of the medication. With the restriction around the controlled medication, the patients had to see the same doctor every time for their prescription renewals. If the physician was away, the patients would be forced to wait for their prescription. Secondly, patients requiring prescription changes wait days before obtaining their medications due to bureaucratic reasons, especially if the medication needs to be changed to another covered under the provincial drug plan. Lastly, there were patients on social assistance who require forms to be completed to obtain social support, but were unable to be seen due to not having any …show more content…
I am applying to Master of Public to not only learn more about the concept behind health promotion, health policy, and healthcare delivery but more importantly to learn how to develop the skills required for researching, implementing and evaluating health promotion intervention. From these new skills, I will be better equipped to create new ways to keep patients informed about how they can manage their health alongside their healthcare professionals. My long-term goal is to improve healthcare delivery within the province I work in with the knowledge I gain from this program. My future career aim is to become a Public Health Officer with the Public Health Agency of
In chapter 2, of Essentials of the U.S Health Care System, Shi and Singh both talk about focusing on determinants to improve health. Having adequate health insurance for everyone is a great start to improving one’s health, but the bigger issue is addressing the needs of the people who have low income or the needs for different ethnic groups. In the documentaries, Bad Sugar, Becoming American, Collateral Damage and In Sickness and In Wealth, they all touched on social determinants. It did not matter if you lived in the United States, a third world country or a reservation, they all expressed a need the can better their health.
The knowledge that I will obtain in the public health portion of the program will allow me to be better prepared to understand the social and environmental determinants of health that contribute to the development of diseases, and this will allow me to care for my patients more effectively. As these and other public health issues become more prominent, having a well-trained workforce that is equipped to address community-level health concerns is vital. As a profession, PAs are well educated as primary care clinicians and are able to handle a wide variety of common health care disorders. Adding a master’s degree in public health equips PAs with an expanded skill set which can be used to manage the health of entire communities, specifically those which are

Canada’s Health Care system is gradually growing to be a major concern in today’s society with providing Canadians with the standard of care they deserve. Health care has become an issue because of the shortage of doctors in Canada; many of them are either going to the U.S.A. or going to other countries to practice in hospitals and clinics. The earning cap imposed by the government has forced doctors to work fewer hours than are necessary to serve the public. Many Canadians are without a doctor to help them with their needs and emergency rooms are filled to capacity with no available beds for those who have to be admitted to the hospital. Waiting time for specialist and specialty tests have become so long that someone diagnosed with a major illness may die before they can be properly treated. Nurses and others in the medical field are overworked and understaffed because the government has made cut-backs to the Health Care System. We live in a country where our health care is a privilege to have, but getting ill is becoming a problem if there is not adequate facilities and professionals to care for the sick. Today’s society is aging longer than ever and will need health care longer than before; patients recovering from hospital stays are being sent home more quickly than ever before, and terminal patients are being sent home for their last days.
The introductory of Canada’s health care system in the mid-20th century, known as Medicare, led the country into the proud tradition of a public health care system, opposite to America’s privatized health care system in the south. Though Canada’s health care system still holds some aspects of a privatized system, it is still readily available for all citizens throughout the nation. After continuous research, it is clear to state that public health care and the association it has with welfare state liberalism is by far a more favourable option for Canada, than that of private health care and the association it has with neo-conservatism. To help understand why public health care is a better and more favourable option for Canada, it is fundamental
Health care in the United States is a booming topic that everyone seems to have their own opinion on, but are the health care companies really interested in making the world a healthier place or are they more interested in making money? This is a growing social problem in not only the United States but the world. The social problems that are arising from health care are the growing pharmaceutical problems, the issue on overmedication, and the issue surrounding privatized hospitals. These social problems have been growing for decades and it is finally time to stop them.
Health promotion is a multifaceted movement with a core value on respect, empowerment, equity, inclusion and social justice (MacDougall 2002). Aims to achieve holistic health, while it is influenced by medical and social determinants. These determinants which aids to deter...
Nearly every American can agree that our current health care system needs reforms. Primarily do to the fact that 45.7 million Americans are without health insurance. That's approximately 16 percent of Americans who sometimes have to do without healthcare, or face crucial financial responsibility. The main issues are admission to healthcare, and the affordability of health care. Before 1920, doctors didn't know enough about diseases to really provide useful care to sick people. Therefore the...
First off, the establishment of Medicare was a key defining moment in Canadian history. Tommy Douglas strongly believed that every Canadian deserved the right to have quality health care, despite one’s social status. He began establishing Medicare first in Saskatchewan three months after being elected for the CCF premier. At first, the CCF began to provide full-funding for treatment of mental illness, STD’s and cancer. By January 1st, 1945 they had distributed government health care cards to all pensioners, all mothers on mother's allowance, and all disabled people in Saskatchewan entitling them to full Medicare coverage including drugs. The first actual Medicare program was erected in the Swift Current area which was the poorest region in Saskatchewan. All citizens were granted all sorts of medical services, such as dental and hospital care. This paved the road for future Medicare programs. (Mason). Medicare is a definitive moment in Canada’s history because it helped Canadians considerably, especially those who were not as well off, to ensure that they are getting proper medical care without fearing of the costs.
The medical field offers a variety of job opportunities for people of any age, education and skill level. One of the many jobs offered by the medical field is that of a biomedical engineer. A biomedical engineer applies engineering principles to healthcare and the equipment used in the health field. Being a biomedical engineer, you can take very many paths as soon as you finish your schooling. Depending on where you work, you can have multiple duties such as designing equipment and devices used for diagnosing and treating medical problems. Biomedical engineers evaluate the properties of biomedical equipment, maintain, and provide technical support with proper training required to use the equipment. On the more scientific aspect of the job,
Health is by far the most important thing for a human being, so every penny invested on it has to work. This essay is about the study of the current state of American health reforms and why they are desperately required. Unfortunately things are not that bright as they might seem, an American investing most of their money on health care is basically not getting the level of health care they deserves. With all the investment in the medical field and all the advancements of medical domains, government should be providing best health care in the world for its people.
I have chosen Public Health as my career path because I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. Also, I chose healthcare as a career because health does not only focus on the physical aspects of wellness, but it applies to all areas of wellness, such as, intellectual, social, spiritual, financial, occupational, environmental and emotional wellness. Moreover, Public Health is a challenging, diverse and dynamic field. My philosophy of health is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities and the population. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public
doctor begins his visit he/she already knows the individual’s height, weight, is there food at home, and whether family has adequate housing (R. O. ,2012). This lead to better clinical choices, would lead to doctors habitually prescribing these resources for individuals in need, which eventually evolved into patients with an elevated bod index would automatically be written a prescription for Health Leads the electronic medical record. The pad system shows that this idea changed the organization values and beliefs of its members and became a normal occurrence to provide resources for the client to keep them for obtaining health problems from the start.
My International background, cultural competency, multilingual abilities, and academic aptitude will aid me in successfully completing the Graduate program of Public Health. I am confident that this program will provide me with necessary tools and education to successfully execute and construct policies that would benefit both local and international communities. Through my Medical Scribe experiences, EMT work, Undergraduate coursework, helped me gain in depth knowledge and different perspectives into the health care industry. I believe that University of New England is the best conduit to pursue and accomplish my academic and career goals.
I am certain that a master’s in public health from a university such as the University of Illinois at Springfield program will provide the knowledge and skills that will mold me as an individual to work best with the public and sequentially create a justifiable link between the public and the health services, refining the lifestyle of thousands of
