Although it seems stories cannot be related as binary opposites, in fact it is true. Binary opposites are groups that people think do not coexist. These opposites cannot exist together (Marinaro). For instance; being courageous and being cowardly. These are binary opposites so they cannot be related to each other. Between the books The Things They Carried and Things Fall Apart; both characters, Okonkwo’s and Tim O’Brien’s fear drives them to make decisions they are unhappy with. In Tim O'Brien's The Thing They Carried , he tells a story about Tim O’Brien the character had to make a tough decision, if he should go to war or if he should go away to Canada. O’Brien did not want to seem like a coward for running, but he did not want to make the courageous choice by going; he cared about what people would think of him. O’Brien could not bare the comments of thoughts that people would have if he ran, “-and I couldn't risk the embarrassment”(O’Brien 57). This also relates to Okonkwo who cared about what his village would think of him as well. In Things Fall Apart written by Chinua Achebe, Okonkwo is a leader of Umuofia who took in Ikemefuna, who came from another tribe and they grew to have a solid relationship.
