Not All Billionaires Attend College Most high school students automatically decide that their next step after graduating high school is attending postsecondary school, without considering alternative options. Although many have achieved success without enrolling in tertiary school, educators and statistics have strongly convinced students that participation in a higher education is the only way to guarantee a high-paying job. Certainly, the idea of this is ridiculous, as it is undoubtedly possible to succeed without a postsecondary diploma. Furthermore, the financial costs are steep, considering there is a huge possibility of unemployment post graduation. Given these points, postsecondary education is the most overrated route high school graduates …show more content…
Despit the fact that statistics have shown that tertiary school graduates end up having higher salaries, there are an unlimited amount of ways to become successful. Bill Gates, in particular, is a great example of success without a four-year degree. Gates dropped out of Harvard University to pursue a career in software, and is now one of the wealthiest people in the entire world (“Billionaire College Dropouts”). Students need to recognize that a college degree is not the only path to success. In fact, Gates is not the only entrepreneur to find success without a Harvard diploma. Other examples are Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple; Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook and David Karp, the creator of Tumblr. (Hudson). Also, in an interview with The New York Times, Google's Senior Vice President, revealed that 14% of people at Google had never gone to college, and in fact, many of them were amateurs that started off in their bedrooms (Wilezol). Ultimately, with a significant amount of practice, they had developed enough skills where a degree or diploma to show proof that they can do the job is nonessential, and their proficiencies are proven in the programs and applications they are able to create (Wilezol). The examples given further proves that with ambition and hard work, success is …show more content…
The belief that a stable job is guaranteed is absolutely foolish. In point of fact, there are statistics stating that 40.7% of young bachelor’s degree holders are “mal-employed,” or work in a job that has no relation to the degree they acquired (Drexel). There is not much of a point to a degree if you cannot secure a job in the field you studied. Brianna Flaherty is an unemployed postsecondary graduate, who entered into college with the belief that her credentials after graduating would affirm her dream job (Newman). In an interview with Susan Newman for the website, Psychology Today, Flaherty declared “I no longer buy into the idea that having a degree will give you your dream job. I see on Craigslist that my Creative Writing degree, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, qualifies me to be a receptionist” (Newman). Sadly, a large percentage of postsecondary school graduates find themselves, soon after graduating, struggling to find a job in their field, or a job at all. Surely, if you are not able to obtain a job in what you studied, or obtain a job at all, postsecondary education is far from
Secondary education rises faster in price than auto insurance. Yet, secondary education is almost required in the United States to succeed. Yes, there are hundreds of people in the United States that have been successful without a college degree, but they are outliers. Students should choose not to go to college based on outliers, but go to college based on the fact thousands have succeeded because of their college degrees. It is more important then ever to know what makes a college great if students are going to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars over four
As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. This creates a belief in many young students that college actually is a commodity, something they must have in order to have a good life. There’s many different factors that influence this mindset, high schools must push the importance of the student’s willingness and drive to further their education. College isn’t just a gateway to jobs, but it is an opportunity to increase knowledge and stretch and challenge the student which in return makes them a more rounded adult and provides them with skills they might lack prior to
For most people who want to pursue and can afford higher education, and also is ready to suffer from debt; the option is always available. Whether it’s to continue on achieving a bachelor’s degree, after gaining a high school diploma, or from a master’s to a PhD; when entering the job market with these degrees, which states that these graduates are certified to work in a specific field; they’ve majored in at a university, college and technical school; the graduates are now looking to be employed at a job that will provide a good salary; this will allow them to make a living for themselves and/or family. Additionally, this new founded job will help them pay off their college debt. Everyone has their own personal meaning to what they believe,
The article made me revaluate my decisions. I also asked myself if I were sure of what I wanted to major in. As Brooks mentioned nowadays it’s hard for young adults to find a decent job after graduating. Not only that, but if you are in a competitive major like business, accounting, and even criminal justice, the chances of you getting a job can be very limited. I have personally seen a couple of my friends with Bachelor degrees working a fast food restaurant or doing something else, that has nothing to do with their major earning minimum wage. Many people have degrees nowadays and the hunt for jobs seems to become more competitive everyday. I still have a couple of years before I achieve my goal of getting my degree. The way the work force is getting so competitive, by the time I finally receive my bachelors degree, the chances of me finding a job are going to narrow
Every single individual has once heard the words “get good grades, go to a good college and graduate, in order to get a good job and succeed in life.” However, no one can really assure that a student with a degree is going to have a better future than those who do not attend college. Lawrence B. Schlack, a retired superintendent, asserts in his article “Not Going to College is a Viable Option” that college is not the only place to go after graduating from high school. By using different kinds of persuasive techniques the author effectively supports his claim and makes the article an understandable and important tool for both parents and students who believe that college is their mandatory option after high school.
When students are in high school, is the end, they are finally free after 13 years of schooling, but for many people graduating from high school is just the beginning. After graduating from high school, students are faced with the difficult decision of whether or not to continue on with their education. And if they do decide to continue on with their education, what form of education will they choose. There are a variety of different options open to students each accompanied by their own pros and cons. These options include; no school, 4-year university, or 2-year community college.
In “Should the Obama Generation Drop Out?” Charles Murray talks about how a college degree now days, is looked at higher than it should be when it comes to meeting the qualifications for a job. Most jobs that pay over minimum wage will require you to have a college degree, making it very difficult for people that either can’t afford it or do not believe in it, to get a reliable well paying job. Like Barack Obama said “It’s what you can do that should count when you apply for a job, not where you learned to do it”(Murray 97); a large amount of people have the skills for a job but do not have the degree to show for, making them not qualified for the job. Companies will not even give you an interview if your resume does not have any type of degree on it. That situation makes life very unfair for multiple individuals. There should be some kind of certification test for applicant to take to see if he or she meets the skills needed for the job. The benefits of discarding the bachelor’s degree as a job qualification would be huge for both employers and job applicants. Therefo...
When the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony founded the first college in America, Harvard, in 1636, it marked the beginning of college as the backbone to the American Dream (“About Harvard” ). Around the world, America is coveted for the “American Dream” in which someone can go from deep poverty, to unbelievable wealth, all by getting an education which allows a person to obtain any job and reach any economic level. The article “Peter Thiel Thinks You should skip college, and He’ll Even Pay For Your Trouble; The famous disrupted says overpriced universities hold back innovation, and what's to rewrite education to his liking” by Tom Clynes argues people should not attend college because it is a hindrance to innovation, while the article
Contrary to popular belief, a college education can help with any job, regardless of whether the job is within a certain major or not. In fact, a college graduate even benefits if they take up a job as a plumber or a police officer- not only from their academic education, but also from learning important skills such as persistence and discipline (Leonhardt). Having a college experience and exposure to the world creates well- rounded people with higher skills and work ethics- and therefore better workers. Though they aren’t immune to being turned down, college graduates are more likely to actually get jobs, and be paid more for them, as shown in a study d...
Students’ wouldn’t be able to hold down a job is the second reason they shouldn’t dropout of high school. Many employers would like to have someone who has been too high school and that have been educated so they can handle money and add things p...
One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Going to college is not the best choice for every high school graduate because many students cannot handle college, colleges’ lower standards, and not all jobs require a college degree.
College is not so much a promise of success as it is a chance at success. Young adults should not feel like college is the best and only option for them. Robert Reich emphasizes this idea in his writing, stating “Last year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 46 percent of recent college graduates were in jobs that don’t even require a college degree.” For a lot of people, college can be a really bad investment, and although more and more jobs do require a degree there are many jobs that don’t. Even after getting a degree many people find that they are working in a job that has nothing to do with their field of study. Also, Collge is not something that is for everyone, but working is Len Penzo stated “There are plenty of relatively well-paying jobs available that don’t require a college degree. According to US Labor Department projections, 63% of all new jobs that will be created between now and 2020 won’t require a college degree.” For the last few decades, college degrees have served as a guarantee for easy access to a middle-class life. But the middle class is on the decline. Although the necessity of having a college degree continues to rise in our society, there are also many new and innovative ways for people to find a way to make a living without a college degree. Those who have been putting their trust in the old system are finding themselves with nowhere to climb. Finally, college just simply is not something everyone can handle Penzo also stated that “Not everybody is college material. If they were, 54% of all Americans who enroll in college wouldn’t eventually become dropouts. Look, college is hard enough for those who are motivated; for people attending who don’t really want to be there, it’s almost impossible.” The idea that every young person needs to go college is wrong. College can be a pathway to success, but it can also be a waste of time and
Charles Murray, the author of “What’s Wrong With Vocational School?” discusses how too many of today’s high school graduates wrongfully head off to a four-year college. For a large majority of the population, a college education is unnecessary. Murray says that a lot of students don’t even want an advanced education. Even if they do want an education, they aren’t qualified for it. Additionally, a large number of these students are striving for an education or experience that a four-year college isn’t meant to fulfill.
There is a lot of pressure put on high school students to go to college. Junior and Senior year of high school all students hear is ‘where are you going to college’ and ‘what are you going to do with your life’. Such questions can be overwhelming and cause a lot of stress for students. It’s been put into everyone’s minds that in order to be successful you absolutely have to go to college and get a degree. Not every successful person went to college. The idea of college can put a lot of stress onto a person when they think it is the only way to be successful, but it is possible to be successful without a degree thus students should not be pressured into going to college as soon as they graduate high school.
...s comes with college being too expensive and is growing at a rate higher than inflation (Kantrowitz). There are many great jobs out there that don’t require a degree and pay good as well as on the job training. The truths many people aren’t willing to admit are getting a college degree will lead people to better careers too. People don’t need a college degree to be successful, but having an education is important, along with a desire to continue to learn, work hard, and adapt.
