Organizational culture has many applications, but the overarching meaning is a set of values that governs the way an organization performs. This is often a mission statement such as: “To spread the power of optimism”- Life is Good, or “Organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” – Google. Once you know why drives a company, it’s easy to learn so much more about then. Why they chose that, why is that important, or if they even uphold it. The organizational culture can set so many expectations in a customer’s mind, and choosing one you will uphold and highlights the most important aspects of your work can be vital to the perception and connection.

The process of working on a project is all very connected to the team you are working with. A rendering could get passed between four people to ensure it comes out as best as possible. Working together this much means that communication is huge. There is hardly miscommunication between the team because they value that seamless product so much. To ensure that, we walk through just about all of our process as a team. This is done so in meetings, casual and formal, or it’s also just as nice to go over to a coworker’s desk and run them through the details while asking for their input. The morale is often very headstrong. To say that sounds off-putting, however it is always in the client’s favor. Working with companies that are known to not have the best spaces or branding, we all want to see improvements for them more than anything. Many work on projects longer than their hours require because the heart and soul of the company are of such high value. Overall, an organizational culture can show so much about any company, more than most think about. Leadership is contagious throughout the world and most importantly in the Army. It is not just my view, but of all leaders, at all levels, that organizations are responsible for setting conditions that lead to long-term organizational success. As I reflect on my experiences, through experience and observation, I realize how my values, beliefs, and perspectives about leadership continuously evolve over time. Recognizing these changes over time helps me better understand that people in organizations have different perspectives in life. This leadership narrative serve as important guiding principles for how I will lead at the organizational level and represents my thought, values and beliefs.
In 1971 Southwest Airlines started their operations with a vision of being a low cost/low fare carrier for passengers traveling between San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. After early legal battles and struggles gaining market share, their fighting spirit, integrity and will to succeed paid off. Over the course of the next 40+ years, Southwest has become the world’s largest low-cost carrier, while carrying more domestic passengers that any other U.S. airline (“Southwest Corporate,” 2015). Their culture, values and operating practices are what have driven this company to its current success and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
Organizational culture is the system of shared beliefs and values that develops within an organization and guides the behavior of its members, while organizational structure is an expression of social and economic principles of hierarchy and specialization (Kinicki, 2015). Both the culture and the structure of an organization are important things for management to understand in order to successfully set and achieve an organization’s goals. Companies who excel in highly competitive fields can attribute their successful economic performance to a cohesive corporate culture that increases competitiveness and profitability. This culture is best utilized in an organization that has the necessary structure to allow its employees to coordinate their actions to achieve its goals.

Organizational culture is further defined by ownership or managements setting of the goals of the firm. The organization may ask employees “why do you come to work every day?” They may ask, “What is the goal of the firm, from your perspective?” Questions like this help management align their culture with the perceived culture of the employees or groups within the organization.
Organizational culture is the intangible quality keeping the workforce, leadership, customers and stakeholders bounded together. Theorists of organizations believe that organizational culture represents the pattern of behaviours, values, and beliefs of an organization. Hence, studies around organizational culture have been seen as great helpful and essential for understanding organizations and their behaviours. Additionally, organizational culture has been considered to be an important determinant of organizational success. Therefore, leaders and managers pay more than more attentions on this topic, focusing on constructing and managing organizational cultures.
Every organization has its own culture that plays an important role in shaping the behavior of the organization and its employees. One definition of organizational culture states it is “the values and behaviors that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of an organization” including “the organization’s expectations, experiences, philosophy, and values that hold it together” (Organizational Culture, 2015). Basically, organizational culture is the combination of a company’s “attitudes, beliefs, customs, and written and unwritten rules that have been developed over time and are considered valid” (Organizational Culture, 2015).

This can be measured by the income of the company, and market share. Also, an appropriate culture within the society can bring advantages to the company which helps to perform with the demand of the industry environment. For example, a company with a flexible, and innovative organisational culture will create competitive advantages that benefit the organisation's performance.
