Disney’s Big Hero 6 is set in a futuristic amalgamation of San Francisco and Tokyo. Instead of following a stereotypical animation guideline, which disassociates the audience from the visceral and the moral, Disney created a diverse portmanteau of entertainment and thought which represents many aspects of modern youth. The film’s ability to explore themes which heavily relate to today’s youth has ensured its popularity with the Box Office and younger audiences alike. The film privileges justice, as the perspective of revenge being destructive is driven constantly throughout. Consequently, Disney is shaping the future generations with positive morals and ethics. A thorough examination of the film’s symbolism, musical accompaniment and plot reveal a constant thematic moral from Disney – that revenge is destructive. Symbolic colours and their representations are a key theme in Big Hero 6. Colour is a form of non-verbal communication. It is not a static energy, and its meaning depends on the person’s enigma. The name Yokai in Japanese folklore symbolises calamity and destruction, and he is quoted saying “This is a revenge story.” Yokai’s life was dramatically changed when he lost his daughter in an ‘accident’, and he was turned to corruption. Yokai’s beliefs entitled him to believe that revenge is the only option. Throughout the runtime of the movie, he is proven very wrong through multiple attempts resulting in destruction and negativity in his own life.
