Should Betting be Legalized?
Most people associate gambling with casinos across the nation, but the new phenomena of sports gambling has become a bigger problem now. Thirty-Three million Americans take part in fantasy football each year (Spears). That number is about ten percent of the total US population. One in ten Americans play in March Madness brackets while illegally wagering more than $2.5 billion in a three-week period (Spears). Now with this much money already being illegally gambled in sports, why not put forth the effort and legalize gambling on sports? If people are willing to put so much money towards something illegal, people will put even more towards it if it is legalized. Betting on sports gets people to use their brains, it makes people a profit, and it makes you a part of the game. The one thing betting can also do is increase viewers that tune into a game. Would you wake up at 10 a.m. to watch another team play when your team does not play until later at night? (Stewart). Bettors will not only bet on their favorite team, but they will also bet on tons of other games they feel confident about.
