This declaration would reveal the cause of King Hamlet’s mysterious death to be at the hands of his own dear brother, Claudius. Claudius would go on to hide the entire vile act, and to add insult to injury, Claudius would marry his brother’s wife, Gertrude, in order to obtain the crown. This betrayal by Claudius goes on to show his deceitful and depraved nature. The Ghost’s diction, as seen in the quote, helps convey a double meaning. The use of the word “sleeping” can be interpreted in the literal sense of King Hamlet being asleep, whenever his brother stumbled across him; however, it can also be seen as Claudius murdering King Hamlet and thus taking possession of all his prized possessions, including his beloved Gertrude. Furthermore, The Ghost also adds, “Let not the royal bed of Denmark be / A couch for luxury and damned incest” in order to warn Hamlet against Claudius (I.v.82-83). The Ghost proclaims against the crown of Denmark being laid upon Claudius, who has shed the blood of his own brother and married his own brother’s wife. This demonstrates the evil act of betrayal by Claudius and the wicked act of marrying Gertrude shortly following King Hamlet’s
The Ghost explains how he was killed to Hamlet, and how his death was a forged process or murder. He states, “A serpent stung me, so the whole ear of Denmark”, this was how the murder was done. The Ghost also states, “That swift as quicksilver it courses through/The natural gates and alleys of the body”. Both these quotes provide the image of the serpent pouring poison into the ear of the Ghost while he was still alive. The Ghost then adds, “The serpent that did sting thy father’s life/Now wears his crown.” This is the moment that Hamlet makes the discovery that the killer was the current king, Claudius, his uncle. The Ghost and Hamlet start to discuss the Queen and how she was not virtuous after the Ghost’s death. The Ghost states, “Will sate itself in a celestial bed/And prey on garbage” this is providing imagery that the Queen will gratify her appetite to the point of disgust in a heavenly form or angelic bed, and prey on garbage. This is how the Ghost chooses to describe the incestuous relationship between Claudius and the Queen to
Throughout human history, betrayal has been considered amongst the very worst offenses one could commit against another. Betrayal of another person is an despicable act of disloyalty and leads to broken trust. Betrayal, at its very core, is when one person in a relationship acts in such a way that favors their own interests at the expense of the other person. Betrayal sends a clear signal about how seldom the betrayer values their relationship with the betrayed. In modern society, cheating, lying, and self interest, are commonplace. One must do whatever it takes to get ahead, disregarding whomever they hurt along the way. In a world where many are reluctant to trust one another, it seems as if the only people one
Deceit is a major cause of the downfall of Hamlet. This is demonstrated in three instances in the play. First, Polonius spies on Hamlet while he is talking privately with his mother Gertrude. Second, Claudius sends Hamlet away to England. Finally, Laertes and Claudius scheme to kill Hamlet.
Hamlet is a play by William Shakespeare about a prince named Hamlet who was spoken to by the ghost of his dead father telling Hamlet to kill his uncle Claudius (the new king) because Claudius killed him. The story revolves around Hamlet's dillema of how to kill his uncle while being deceptive enough so that no one finds out about the ghost. This essay will prove how deception is often used in Hamlet for many reasons. Claudius uses deception to protect himself from being prosecuted for his crime of killing the King. No one knows what the deal is with Gertrude because she deceives everybody by keeping to herself all the time keeping everyone from knowing anything. By using quotes from the book I will prove how these two (Claudius and Gertrude) and among a few others , use deception for different reasons and in different ways. A lot of the times it is to protect someone, or themselvs because they believe that the truth will hurt more than their lies.
Deceit, misleading information, and spying on others can lead to their demise, intentionally or accidentally. The misleading and deceitful instances in the play are indirectly responsible for Hamlets’ death. Claudius misleads Hamlet when he shipped him off to England under the guise of a restful retreat and when he realizes that the new king has lied to not only him, but the people of Denmark about the death of the former king. Hamlets’ deceit comes from his mother, believing that she has betrayed his father’s love by not mourning for long enough after his death, and by marrying Claudius. Spying also causes problems for Hamlet down the line since it leads to the killing of Polonius, and the deaths of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

Hamlet is a suspenseful play that introduces the topic of tragedy. Throughout the play, Hamlet displays anger, uncertainty, and obsession with death. Although Hamlet is unaware of it, these emotions cause the mishaps that occur throughout the play. These emotions combined with his unawareness are the leading basis for the tragic hero’s flaws. Shakespeare gives Hamlet a vengeful tone as Hamlet goes about the play pursuing to seek revenge on Claudius for killing his father. In the play Hamlet, Hamlet reveals to the readers that his fatal flaw is inevitably his act to not take action and to overthink. Betrayal is basically an action of disloyalty towards something or someone. Hamlet is stabbed in the back by his close friends such as, Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, as they help his uncle Claudius spy on Hamlet, Ophelia also betrays Hamlet as she aids Claudius by helping Polonius and Claudius spy on Hamlet when he starts acting mad, and others. Hamlet shows no disregard for the deaths of Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Ophelia, and delays killing Claudius all to display Hamlet’s imperfection of not taking action and his inability to reflect on the deaths he causes due to his overthinking.
In Hamlet written by William Shakespeare there is many emotions and feelings. Recurring themes are also found such as self loathing and pity. Throughout the story we find that Hamlet is many things and carries many different emotions. Shockingly and through it all he is depressed, but sane. Hamlet goes through lots; he loses his father, his mother marries his uncle, and he doesn’t even get to be king. Unfortunate events like these cause him to act crazy around certain characters like Claudius, Polonius, Gertrude, and Guildenstern. Around characters such as Bernardo and Horatio Hamlet is perfectly rational.
"To be, or not to be, that is the question."(Hamlet) This is the issue that torments Hamlet through the whole play. Should I live or would it be a good idea for me to pass on, would it be advisable for me to take revenge for my dad 's demise? These are all issues that Hamlet fights inside himself. Hamlet 's uncertainty is trailed by inaction. The purpose behind this battle with hesitation can be founded on numerous variables or on a mix of a couple.

Consequently, this key act of betrayal forms the plays overall theme of revenge while also showing the connection between power and corruption and the idea that ‘”what goes around, comes around.”
There are many reasons why Hamlet had his downfall. One being his decision to keeping the murder of his father a secret. Another one being the betrayals of his closest friends. Perhaps if Guildenstern or Rosencrantz had been there for Hamlet, to rely and place trust upon, he might not had to fell so alone. A little sympathy from his girlfriend Ophelia, and even his mother Gertrude would have been nice as well. Unfortunately Ophelia is held back from Hamlet, due to her father. Gertrude marries his uncle Claudius, who is responsible for his fathers death, and is looking to kill him next. And Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are ordered by Claudius to spy on Hamlet, and betray him as a friend.
