I have been a part of Bethlehem since early childhood. Around 7th grade I became active in the youth group. I believe this group has impacted me the most in the church. We have taken many trips but the two that stick out to be were both in 2014. The entire year brought many fond memories and chances for me to grow closer to God. When we traveled to Memphis for choir tour we stopped at a camp for special needs kids and we got the chance to hang out with some of them one on one. The girl I was paired with, Julia, blew my mind by being so inspirational, always thinking positive, and constantly having a smile on her face. We also sang to all of them as a group and I was moved by the fact that all of the kids were in the audience dancing and singing
Last semester, I planned my first outreach event at the church. We had bounce houses, face painting, food, games, and candy. I worked so hard to get this put together and even members of the church used their own money to purchase things to make this event happened. There was door to door evangelizing going on in the surrounding neighborhoods to get the word out, and there were only two people in the community that showed up. Two people.
There are many different cultures throughout the world. They each have their own distinct customs and beliefs relating to marriage, rites of passage, conflict resolutions, education etc... The most interesting aspect of each culture is how they incorporate their religious beliefs into the healthcare they receive. Some cultures are not affected by their religious beliefs when dealing with healthcare. They are not regulated in the terms of medical procedures and practices they can obtain from healthcare professionals. However, this is not true for every culture in this world. The Amish and Mennonite culture is depicted upon separating themselves from this world and living a plain life. These two cultures are heavily rooted in their religious beliefs and have tendencies not to stray away from those beliefs regardless of the possible benefits of modern technology. Amish and Mennonite culture may share some similarities, but they have some differences also. A culture’s religious beliefs will be the main determining factor in the healthcare they choose.
Amish view pregnancy and childbirth as normal biological functions of the female body, however; due to their cultural beliefs they will not seek out prenatal care until late in their pregnancy, if no problems arise. Women who are primiparous, giving birth for the first time, will generally seek prenatal care at around four months, while those who are multiparous, those who have given birth multiple times, generally seek prenatal care during the third trimester. Amish women typically do not outright reject the use of modern medical technology and practices if it can assist in the pregnancy, however; they must determine which practices coincide with their cultural and spiritual belief system. Many Amish women will seek the advice and care from modern medical professionals as well as family and friends, such as taking prenatal vitamins as well as herbal remedies (Campanella et all, 1993). Amish women tend to adhere to a “regular” diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and protein. However, many women do believe in the necessity of increasing their intake of dairy, especially milk during their pregnancy (Kulig et all, 2004).
This experience was really out of my comfort zone. It was hard to be an outsider and not prepared for what was to come and not speaking one of the languages used to understand the entire service. This service learning project gave me the opportunity to try a new church and gain a deeper respect for a different religion. Everyone at the service was very educated on speaking the sacred texts and participating in the rituals practiced. I hope to have gained a better understanding for those who are new to religions and are nervous to come to a worship service. I will make more of an effort to be welcoming and accommodating to those who are new to our church.
It is incredibly uncommon in this day and age for an individual to hold their own personal religion and line of beliefs. In most cases it wouldn 't even be categorized as a religion. Religion requires multiple persons. It is the breeding of individuals who see community as a defining factor in advancing their religious beliefs and immersing such beliefs into their lives. The aspect of community works differently amongst various religions, but one thing that seems to hold true across the board is that religion functions as a “social glue”. It can serve to hold individuals together, as well as an entire group of people. The counter-argument to this would certainly be that religion instead serves to rip communities apart. The latter to this is prominent in religious communities whose sole function is to impound intense religiosity into individuals in an atmosphere where the extensive nature and uniform of their beliefs are the highest priority. Jesus Camp, is a documentary that makes light of how religious communities function
The Appalachian culture were born in the Appalachian mountain range and their family live in or near the Appalachia. “Appalachia comprises 420 counties in 13 states—Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania.” (Purnell, 2009, p. 88). Since the Appalachians comes from such a broad region, I choose to discuss the population residing in Kentucky. The Appalachians from the Kentucky regions suffers from many issues such as poverty and this can influence issues concerning their state of their health and environmental factors. As a public health and community health nurses, their focus is to identify problems
I spent every spring and summer in middle school doing mission work and community service. I loved the opportunity that it gave me to build relationships and share my beliefs with people I didn’t know. Little did I know that this would pave the way for a life-changing experience that I would encounter one day. Each spring my church would host a missionary event called “The Ignite Project.” I felt an urge to join the group, recognizing that it was a calling to profess my faith in Jesus. These mission trips helped me to go out

Our goal as a church was to go into another community and share the gospel with them but we did it in a unique way, through community service. Together we volunteered in a trailer park to clean up trash, fix gardens, redo roofing, paint and clean trailers. While doing this I meet an old woman who appreciated what we were doing for her and her home and wanted to know why. This gave my small group and I an opportunity to help guide her to Christ and when we left not only did we give her a better and beautiful community and trailer to live in, but we left her with a bible and a thirst to learn more about our God. This experience was important to me because it showed how one can truly make a difference in people’s lives just through serving
I have never felt more welcome and loved in my entire life, the energy in that room from all these people was incredible. This was the day I began my transition into adulthood, I made a commitment to this community, to God. I turned my life around, I started working harder in school, I matured, and had a positive outlook on my situation. Because of young life I learned
I enjoyed this experience so much, that I decided to go back to volunteer for Change Point, and will be going there once a week. This experience had the impact it did because I got to connect with the community in which change Point serves and help assist others. By doing this, I gained hands-on experience in which will help me in my future career. I also was able to enhance my skills in being a leader and in communication. The parenting classes that I taught to others not only helped them but also helped me.
On Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at approximately 2:00 p.m. Dr. Greaux’s History of the Black Church Class visited St. Phillips Heritage Center and the St. Phillips African Moravian Church. We spent one hour and fifteen minutes at the site, and we left at 3:15 p.m. The Moravian Church is not a historically black church, however it is important because it is one of the earliest and oldest African American churches still standing in North Carolina. The church was originally built in 1861, expanded in 1890, and renovated in 2004. The members of this church are Protestant Christians. The name of St. Phillips church was officially decided a love feast in December of 1914 by Bishop Ronthaler. A love feast is a simple dinner, usually coffee and a small
One of the things I was put in charge of was translating. I was able to translate a sermon we put on for the kids at a vacation bible school type of camp. That was super challenging to know that people were dependent on me, but it is also where I began to see where God had blessed me in my life and where I could be used on this trip. How lucky was I to be given the capability to speak Spanish fluently? It was at this moment that I finally became thankful for the talents God had given me. The trip opened my eyes and I was grateful for the opportunity to share what God had given to me. Another task we had the privilege of helping them with was building them a new chicken coop. We built a new roof and cleaned it up so that the chickens wouldn’t get so hot. The tricky part was communicating that we built exactly what they wanted. Therefore I was there to both help construct, but also help get communication between us and the owners under control. I remember having to go on the road to pick up some supplies. I was with my dad and one of the workers at the orphanage. The actual supply run was not what made the event memorable, it was actually when we stopped for coffee. We were able to sit down and ask him questions. I remember asking why he did what he did, like I just didn’t understand why, he did not make much money and it was not easy what he did. He simply looked at me and said that he loved serving the
During my seventh grade year, my church went to a youth rally at a local church on weekend. Because of this rally and the message it sent, I realized and wanted to give my life to Jesus through baptism. It was awesome, I got home as a young teenager and actually talked to my mom about what it really means to be a Christian and to pick up your cross and follow him. So that very next weekend, my dad baptized me in front of the whole church on Sunday morning. It was an awesome feeling knowing that because of Jesus’ grace and mercy, I will be with him one day and spend eternity with him. Although I was on top of the world at this point, I still didn’t know fully what I had gotten into. So the next few years, I live the typical Christian life. I was trying to be the perfect person by doing the right stuff, I would try not to cuss, I would try to wear as many WWJD bracelets as I could so that I wouldn’t have to talk to them about Christ and they could just see it on my wrist, I would not join in on conversations with my friends that I knew were not right, I was just living life on cruise control.
I was lucky enough to help with a church-based musical group for high school students that toured each summer when I was in my 20s. A couple of the musicals were based on the Old Testament prophets, so I know some of the stories well. It
