In my opinion Beowulf is can be considered a hero. Beowulf can be considered a hero because of the characteristics he displays that resemble heroes. He displays all of the characteristics that heroes have. Throughout the story Beowulf stays true to himself and is morals showing that he is a hero. Beowulf is a hero due to his courage, loyalty, and justice. Beowulf’s courage is a characteristic of a hero and this is what makes him one as well. In the story he faces his fears multiple times while trying to save others. One example of his courage would be this quote that states "Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares the man it has not already marked." This is a good example because it shows how Beowulf had the courage to stand up against Grendel and defeat him. In addition Beowulf also put himself in danger while he was fighting the dragon even when he knew he probably not make it. This is an extreme example of courage because it frightened him that he would not make it, but he fought the dragon anyway. Heroes often do not kill their enemies, but Beowulf does; this does not make him any less of a hero because to ensure protection he has to kill them. An example of this is when Beowulf kills Grendel who is killing men at the mead hall and it was justice and Grendel deserved to be killed. One life taken is better than many more because if Beowulf didn’t kill Grendel he would have continued to terrorize and kill people. So buy killing Grendel Beowulf saved many people. Also when Grendel’s mother wanted revenge Beowulf killed her because she had killed twenty of Hrothgar’s men out of spite. Beowulf shows justice because his enemies get what they deserved, but it was fair.
