Beowulf has many differences and similarities between the book and the movie. The book and the movie all have about the same characters. The changes come from how the characters are represented in the movie. In the book Hrothgar is a good king, the fight with Grendel, how Grendel’s mother is dealt with, where Beowulf rules as king, and the companions Beowulf first brings with him.
The book and movie have similarities such as, Beowulf ripping off Grendel's arm, Beowulf goes to fight Grendel’s mother, Beowulf becomes a king, Beowulf fights a dragon, and Beowulf makes Wiglaf the king when he dies. First, Beowulf goes to the Danes to help Hrothgar purge the evil from the great hall Herot. In both the book and movie Beowulf says he is going to

fight Grendel without armor or weapons so that the no one could say that he fought on unfair terms. After, everyone celebrates the killing of Grendel Grendel’s mother appears again to get her revenge for the killing of her son. Then Beowulf goes looking for Grendel’s mother in her lair to purge all evil from the land. Eventually Beowulf becomes a king that many people respect. One last time Beowulf says he wants to fight the monster that they face alone but, this time he is losing the battle with the dragon. In the end the dragon is dead and Beowulf makes Wiglaf king before he dies. The book and the movie have many differences that make the movie very different from the book. The first difference is how Beowulf fought Grendel. In the book everyone was asleep when Grendel came to Herot to kill and eat people. Beowulf first allowed Grendel to start fighting his men first so that he could see how the monster fought. Beowulf then used nothing but his bare hands to fight Grendel. Grendel and Beowulf wrestled throughout Herot until Beowulf eventually tore off Grendel's arm as the killing blow. In the movie Beowulf and his men were awake for when Grendel arrived. Beowulf had told his men to start singing to lure Grendel to them. As Beowulf began to attack Grendel, Grendel started to retreat, but to keep him from running Beowulf wrapped a chain around Grendel’s arm and held it in the door of Herot and beat Grendel’s arm off with the door. The second difference is the journey to kill Grendel’s mother.
The book starts the journey out by Grendel’s mother killing Hrothgar’s best friend. Beowulf then sets out for revenge to the lair of Grendel’s mother. This becomes a long and dangerous journey down to the bottom of a dark lake that not even the animals would go near. The entire time Beowulf is swimming down to the lair he is being attacked by other monsters. Finally, when Beowulf arrives at the lair he confronts Grendel’s mother. They then engage in a “wrestling match” that Beowulf begins to start losing in. Beowulf starts to think that this will be his last fight until he see’s a sword made by giants. Beowulf then grabs the sword and and kills Grendel’s mother. After this they celebrate and return home to the land of the Geats where Beowulf eventually becomes king. The movie has Grendel’s mother kill Beowulf’s men. Beowulf and Wiglaf set out to kill Grendel’s mother. The journey to the lair is extremely easy. Once Beowulf arrives he does not end up killing Grendel’s mother. Grendel’s mother then offers him to be king if he gives her the golden horn and a new son. Beowulf returns and lies about killing Grendel’s mother. Hrothgar then announces that he makes Beowulf the next king when he dies and then kills himself making Beowulf the
king.
The last difference that occurs is the difference in the deaths of the heroes. In the poem Beowulf dies form a slash to the throat from a dragon. In the movie Boulvine dies from poison. Beowulf dies as an old man in the poem. In the movie though, he dies as a young man. In the poem, Beowulf kills Grindle and then Grindles mother.
The differences and similarities between the traditional version of the Epic Beowulf and the modern version, Beowulf and Grendel, makes passages for characters such as Grendel to be changed due to the time frame in between the film and the epic. There are several characters that stood out from the film, as they are portrayed in the epic as something completely different than in the movie. Grendel is one of the few that stood out the most.
The story begins with Grendel taking the lives of countless innocent men. It seems to all that there is no one who can face this great monster who lives down in the swamp. The king, Hrothgar, becomes concerned for the health of his country and seeks out help from someone of great strength. In hearing this, Beowulf sees it as an opportunity to increase his popularity and fame. Upon arrival, he is anxious to come face to face with the great beast. In addition, he declares that he will fight Grendel without any weapons to prove who is truly the strongest. After his victory, Beowulf gets his fame and becomes king of another land for fifty years.
Beowulf and Gilgamesh are similar; they both experience a hero’s journey. Beowulf hears of Grendel and how he harasses Hrothgar’s kingdom. Beowulf then travels to Hrothgar’s kingdom and says he will defeat the monster with his bare hands. "I have heard moreover that the monster scorns in his reckless way to use weapons; therefore, to heighten Hygelac's fame and gladden his heart, I hereby renounce sword and the shelter of the broad shield, the heavy war-board: hand-to-hand is how it will be, a life-and-death fight with the fiend" (Beowulf 433-440). Beowulf shows great strength and skill when he says this, there is no man that could defeat Grendel. This was shocking to some of Hrothgar’s men because Beowulf didn’t use any weapons. Beowulf tears Grendel’s arm from his body and Grendel flees to his mother. Grendel’s mother then attacks the hall and slaughters many men. Beowulf seeks out to kill Grendel’s mother. Unferth whom gives Beowulf his undefeated sword Hrunting accompanies him. Beowulf dives into the acidic lake and finds Grendel’s Mother. He strikes her with the sword and it shatters; he then sees a giant sword on the wall and grabs it. He strikes Grendel’s Mother and it takes her head clean off. He returns to Hrothgar and shows that he has killed Grendel’s Mother. Beowulf then returns to the land of the Geats. He becomes king after Queen Hygd’s son Heardred dies and successfully rules for 50 years. Then a Dragon harasses Beowulf’s hall where Beowulf challenges the Dragon to a duel. The Dragon bites Beowulf’s neck and
For example, in the book, Grendel attacks due to his aversion to God whilst in the movie Grendel’s actions are due to his hypersensitive state. This change in story takes God out of the picture giving a filtered and non secular viewpoint. Additionally, in the book, when Grendel slays the Danes in the night, he does so while they're sleeping. Whereas in the movie he simply bursts into Heorot, while all Danes bear witness, killing, eating, and bludgeoned everyone and anyone. Painting a bloodier and darker aspect to Grendel than the original story. Another example would be when Grendel’s arm is ripped off, Beowulf does so with his bare hands in the book. In the movie Grendel’s arm is severed as he is fleeing Heorot, torn and ripped from its body as the door was forcibly shut on
Although Beowulf might have been a great warrior, usually people do not think that he is the greatest warrior from a story. Beowulf had the strength and the tactics to take down tons and tons of men on his own, but did not have the wisdom of other warrior figures. Beowulf was mainly strength and toughness, and sometimes a warrior needs to have some type of knowledge to ever be able to fight. A great example to Beowulf would be Luke Skywalker. Luke is in a story that is not the same type of story but, has the same concept. The only main difference would have to be the setting and the type of movie. Beowulf is a warrior that is considered super human and doesn't really belong anywhere, because he is not truly con...
There are many similarities and differences between the movie "Beowulf and Grendel", to the poem. Major differences between the movie and the poem would be Grendel himself. In the poem, he is described as an evil monster born from two demons. In the movie, Grendel is actually human, but known as a troll to the warriors and Danes. The poem doesn’t give the background of Grendel or show how the Danes killed his father and the possible reason of his revenge, like in the movie. If the witch, Selma, was not included in the storyline of the movie, the audience would not have known key information that she was used to show from more flashbacks. The witch gives more of an idea about Grendel’s past life that could have been the possibility to reasons for his actions. Some major similarities are the battles. Both epics include the battles between Beowulf and Grendel, as well as Beowulf and Grendel’s mother. The end results are the same, leading to their death, but the journey and process to the two tales are different.
Another difference could be how the story of Beowulf seems like it's more of a sad story
There are numerous similitudes and contrasts between Beowulf the motion picture which was made in the year 2007, and the poem by an obscure Angelo Saxon poet. A large portion of the likenesses and contrasts are clear. The poem was changed into a motion picture and was more advanced and simpler to see then the epic poem itself. The movie happens to be more modern and gives the audience a better understanding of Beowulf and what happened during his life. It also helps the audience visualize it rather than having to picture the occurences while reading the poem.
Beowulf’s characteristics seen on screen are very different compared to Beowulf’s characteristics in the Anglo-Saxon poem. Beowulf in the film Beowulf
To begin, we can examine the physical appearances of the two heroes. From the get go, we see Beowulf as a very powerful man. We see emphasise of this through the drawings of the novel. We see how muscular he is and the overall aura. He is relaxed and in control every step of the way.
The poem Beowulf was written between 700-750 A.D. by an unknown author set in Denmark and Sweden, other wise known as Scandinavia. The original Beowulf only exists in one copy, and was severely damaged by a fire. The poem was an epic with many Christian references throughout the poem. In the poem, Grendel attacks the people of the Danes at night for the loud celebrating in Herot (mead hall), that drives him mad with rage, bringing death and destruction. Beowulf kills both Grendel, and his mother, then returns to his land to later become the king of the Geats. While in the 2007 film, Beowulf kills Grendel, is seduced by Grendel’s mother, lies about killing her, and becomes king of the Danes.
Beowulf looked over on the wall next to them and saw a magnificent sword hanging on the wall adorned with beautiful carvings, it was blessed with magic. No normal man could ever have lifted that sword, but Beowulf was no normal being. He waited for the right moment to go and retrieve the sword, and when he found the perfect opportunity and he ran straight towards the wall. He pulled the sword down with great force and began running towards Grendel’s mother. Beowulf took in a deep breath as he leaned back and heaved the sword forward. Beowulf had sliced straight through Grendel’s mother’s scaly neck, blood began to pour everywhere and he heard her bones cracking as the sword passed through her.
In countless ways Beowulf and the Harry Potter series can correlate through specific themes, events, etc. In ways they contradict each other, and in some, they concur thoroughly. Throughout both the book and the series they have roughly the same central idea which is to vanquish the evil that remains in a fixed world and bring it into safety again. Each character has his individual weaknesses and powers, which are used to their advantage during the course of the story.
Beowulf’s first accomplishment as an epic hero was his battle with Grendel. Grendel was a huge beast, a descendent of Cain, who ruthlessly murdered innocent Danes because he felt pity for himself. Upon hearing of the Dane’s problem, Beowulf set off to help the Danish without having been called upon. Even though Beowulf had men backing him, He drew battle with Grendel alone and without armor or weapons. Yet, Beowulf emerged victorious with the arm of Grendel as his trophy. Beowulf then went on to kill Grendel’s vengeful mother and a huge fire-breathing dragon who thought it had been done wrong by the Geats. Alas, the killing of the dragon would be Beowulf’s last great battle for the dragon took Beowulf’s life in the struggle for his own.
