Archetypal warrior heroes share three qualities. They all share courage, cleverness, and sacrifice. They each set out on a journey to either protect or prove. Although each of the three had their troubles, they still fought for their causes.
The minotaur is a very fearsome monster, half man, half horse, standing twice as high as any human. It’s tough skin and speed make the minotaur a force to be reckoned with. A horrific beast it is, but a warrior named Theseus from the Greek myth “Daedalus and Icarus”, proves his worth by entering the labyrinth and defeating the minotaur. He sacrifices his own life to prove that he could live up to his promise of defeating the beast. Even after the minotaur was defeated, he proceeded to exit the labyrinth

in one piece. Grendel is a beast that terrified High Hrothgar for a large time period.
He would arrive at night, wake up townsmen, and wreak havoc upon the hall of Heorot. All seemed lost until, one night, an outsider named Beowulf arrived to be the protector of the town. In the Anglo-Saxon myth “Beowulf Fights the Three Monsters of the Far North”, it states “Every night now, men died defenseless in the hands of Grendel – no sword could pierce the thick skin of this monster. Bravely, Beowulf volunteered to sleep by the door of the hall.”
Then during the night, Grendel attacked Heorot once again, but this time, he had a challenge. Beowulf sprung from his slumber to swing his sword at Grendel, but it shattered on impact. Then using Beowulf’s incredible strength, he tore Grendel’s arm off of his shoulder. Grendel then hobbled into the darkness to die.
Hunahpu and Xbalanque, the Mayan hero twins, were intelligent beings, knowing healing rituals, and being able to outsmart The Lords of Death. Their fathers weren’t as smart, as they chose to do all the wrong things. While Hunahpu and Xbalanque are out doing The Lords of Death’s trials they have to do many things, like sacrifice themselves to a greater power, and to be revitalized. The myth quotes, “When they were sent to the Razor House, sharp blades were supposed to cut them to pieces. But they convinced the blades that their job was to cut up animals, not hero twins.” saying that they’re dedicated to being victorious against The Lords of
Death. Towards the end of the myth it states, “When this too was accomplished, they asked the Twins to sacrifice each other. So Xbalanque dismembered his twin and cut out his heart.” Providing sacrifice to their cause. All warrior hero archetypes are alike, they each require courage, sacrifice, and cleverness. Beowulf shows courage by sleeping in the hall, almost asking for Grendel’s arrival. Theseus showed sacrifice by disregarding his father and entering the labyrinth. Hunahpu and Xbalanque each show cleverness as they sway the blades to not hurt them. Although each of these fierce heroes faced their challenges, they each solved them and completed their goals.
In Beowulf, the protagonist Beowulf is shown as a hero with extrodinary strength. This is not what makes him a hero. By definition, a hero is a man of exceptional quality. However this term does not do Beowulf justice. His self-imposed purpose in life is to help others, and eventually sacrifices his own life in doing so. Beowulf’s battle with the dragon serves as a critique of the notion that Beowulf is a hero. The Dragon section displays many of Beowulf’s heoric characteristics. Beowulf establishes himself as a hero by fighting the dragon, exemplifing strength and courage when fighting the dragon, and sacrificing himself so that others can live.
These attacks in Heorot, gain the notice of the famed Geat, Beowulf. Eager for another chance to prove he is the best warrior, he sets off for Hrothgar's kingdom. Hrothgar and his people are seeking vengeance for the loss of many warriors, and others. Beowulf informs the king of his intentions in: “ I have suffered extremes and avenged the Geats (their enemies brought it upon themselves; I devastated them.). Now I mean to be a match for Grendel, settle the outcome in single combat.” (Beowulf. L422-426). After foolishly losing some men to Grendel, he does indeed manage to rip his arm off. Consequently, the monster dies from his wounds. So ends the gruesome reign of the horrible Grendel. Unfortunately, they did not know about the
When Beowulf hears of the monster Grendel overtaking Hrothgar, he sets out to save the hall from Grendel’s grasp. On his way the watchman by the name of Wulfgar recognizes Beowulf’s bravery and greatness. He makes this evident when he states, “My lord, the great King of the Danes, commands me to tell you that he knows of your noble birth and that having come to him from

Grendel tears the door from its hinges with his hands and quickly becomes a Geatish warrior while Beowulf carefully looks around. When Grendel reaches out to pick Beowulf up, he is surprised to find his arm gripped with a strength than he never knew could even happen. Confused and frightened Grendel doesn’t want to run back to the safety of the swamplands. He tries to escape, but Beowulf wrestles him down to the ground. Then the Danes decide to go back to Herot and while they are sleeping, Grendel’s mother comes to attack them in order to even the score for the killing of her son. Then she leaves, taking the body parts of her son and Esher (which is one of Hrothgar's close friends) with her. Beowulf attempts to save him by entering the monster-filled lake, although the sword that he uses is useless against the skin of Grendel’s mother. As he continues to fight, he grows tired, but then notices that there is a huge sword on the wall of the battle hall where he was dragged to. The sword just so happened to be a magical one that was blessed by the giants that made it.
Grendel appears the night when Beowulf arrives at Heorot. Beowulf wrestles the monster barehanded. He tears off the monster's arm but Grendel escapes. He dies soon afterward at the bottom of his mere, or swamp. Hrothgar rewards Beowulf with a great store of treasures. Another banquet is held for the warriors of both the Geats and the Danes.
An epic is a long narrative poem on a serious subject. It usually is about
King Hrothgar once again looks toward Beowulf to take care of another monster. To get ready for this battle Beowulf wears armor and uses the Horting sword which has never lost in battle. Once again Beowulf shows his courage by deciding to go to the bottom of the monster filled swamp and fight alone. Fighting off monsters on his way down, Beowulf reached the bottom where he was met by Grendel 's mother. He tried to cut her head off with Horting, but she is too strong. Beowulf takes a sword made for giants off the wall, and uses his super strength to cut the mother 's head off. As a trophy of this battle Beowulf finds the body of Grendel in a corner and decides to take his head back to the mead hall. Hrothgar celebrates another victory by once again throwing a large celebration where they gave more gifts to Beowulf and the Geats. After two battles, Beowulf decides it is time for him and his men to head back to their homeland. Continuing to show courage, honor, and strength Beowulf states that if the Danes ever have anymore problems with monsters he will help protect
In the beginning of the novel, Beowulf takes interest in the plight of Hrothgar, King of Denmark, and wants to help him fight Grendel. Grendel is a large monster that has been harassing members in the mead-hall of the Heorot. Beowulf owes Hrothgar a favor, due to the fact that Hrothgar saved his father in years past. Hrothgar is honored to have Beowulf attempt to fight the swamp monster, and decides to hold a feast in his name. When Grendel shows up to the feast, Beowulf illustrates his bravery by fighting Grendel without any armor. When Beowulf wins the battle by ripping Grendel’s arm off, everyone in the mead-hall praises Beowulf for his acts of courage. In this scene, Beowulf proves that he is a hero by fighting off a monster that everyone else was afraid of. This made him look
A true hero does not fear death or, but instead risks all that he is for what he believes to be right, moral, and just. Beowulf is an epic and tells the story of a legendary hero, conquering all obstacles as if he was immortal. Up until the end of Beowulf’s life he was constantly looking to be the hero. However, his humanity is exposed by his death. Heroes all share the characteristic of their willingness to die in their effort to accomplish their heroic act, thus making the act in itself heroic. Throughout the epic, Beowulf in many ways exhibited all the qualities and characteristics needed to be a true hero.
What does it mean to be a hero? Like anything else in this world, the definition of the word hero can be argued. Some may say that a hero can be passive, that is if he or she refrains from doing a certain action it makes them heroic. Others would argue that to be truly heroic the character must never turn tail and always face the obstacle head on even though he or she may die in the process. So is Beowulf a hero? Yes, Beowulf is a great epic hero, but his greatness comes only from his sword and not from his mind.
Beowulf is a Viking, there was a hall that was called (Heorot), this hall was attacked by a monster called Grendel, Grendel attacked during the night, Grendel reaches for Beowulf but Beowulf grabs Grendel's arm with a grip stronger than any Grendel has felt before, Grendel became frightened, but Beowulf's hold was too strong for Grendel to escape. Beowulf ripped Grendel's arm and shoulder, and Grendel was wounded heavily. Beowulf mounts Grendel's arm as a trophy on the wall of Heorot.
When Grendel monstrously bursts into Heorot, tears down the heavy door with his beastly hands and instantly devours a Geatish warrior, it immediately tells us that the first climax of the epic Beowulf has arrived. As Beowulf carefully watches Grendel take action, Grendel reaches out to snatch Beowulf as his next meal. Surprised, Grendel becomes extremely frightened to discover that there is another being stronger than himself when Beowulf, using his vice-like grip, pulls Grendel’s arm from his socket. The monster, Grendel, howls with pain and runs out of Heorot leaving his blood-spattered arm still in Beowulf’s hands.
The news of Grendlel traveled to many kingdoms, and soon it reached the Geats from across the sea. King Hygelac, the king of the Geats, heard this news, and soon Beowulf heard it. Beowulf was the strongest, and boldest man in the Geat Kingdom. He was also the son of Ecgtheow, a great war hero. When he heard this news he was ready to help the Danes. At first Hygelac, and the wise eldermen didn’t want Beowulf to go, because they feared he wouldn’t return, but then yielded. Beowulf then chose 15 warriors, with the help of Hygelac and the wise eldermen, to go with him on his journey to defeat Grendel. Upon their arrival, the Geats were greeted by an earl of Hrothgar. The earl asked them who they were, why they were dressed for war, and if they knew the password, and then noticed Beowulf. He was in shock for he had never seen a warrior like this one, and was sure that he was a hero. When Beowulf explained who they were, and why they were there, the earl quickly asked them to follow him to Heorot Hall. When faced with the...
Avenging the death of her son, Grendel’s mother glides into the Heorot in the dark of night and reeks chaos and carnage on the kinsmen of Hrothgar’s tribe. Forced into battle with a second monster, a similar narrative parallels Beowulf’s bout with Grendel. At times displaying reckless pride, “…I shall get glory, or death will take me” …“So ought a man to do when he thinks to get long lasting praise in battle”, while simultaneously fighting for the safety of those from which he is seeking glory. An honorable warrior provides protection and treasure for his people through pursuit of
